Fellow Kincaids, Kinsfolk, Friends, First of all I want to start with a huge and hearelt “Thank You Bob” for having produced the most beauful edions of our Defender for the past few years and a truly enormous “Welcome Emily”! I am absolutely delighted that Emily Silversparre has stepped into the role of Communicaons Director and creator of our Defender newsleer. Thank you Emily and I am sure I speak for every one of the membership in wishing you well as you create, design, gather in material, write for and put together the Defender for this new season. May there be mes of joy and discovery in it all for you! Last September, as many of you will know, Brigadier Bill Kincaid, our Clan Sennachie, died sud- denly with no prior illness at his home. A sudden and great loss to his widow Hilary and his family of course but also to us as a Clan Society. I was honoured to be asked to say a few words before reading from a Bible passage at his memorial service which took place at the Royal Military Chapel in Sandhurst. It was a very beauful and formal occasion but also very family centred making for a memorable mix of sadness at his passing and joy in the memories of a life well lived. Together with Olivia Brisbin, the late mother of Past President James Brisbin, we owe Brigadier Bill so much in understanding our Kincaid history. Those of us who are fortunate enough to own a copy of “This I’ll Defend” will have the only Kincaid history that, to my knowledge, has been published and since there was only one print run they will now be a valuable rarity. I am sharing with you below the words I read in the chapel prior to the Bible reading which really only scratches the surface. Words about Brigadier Bill Kincaid I count myself very fortunate indeed to have known Brigadier Bill for the last 15 years. I met Bill and Hilary for the first me when they came to our home as Bill was researching one of his many books. This one was called “This I’ll Defend” - the history of Clan Kincaid, which I represent here today. Brigadier Bill was a rare breed in this day and age. He was one of the most interesng peo- ple I ever met. He was always interested in other people. He was dignified, gentle, kind and thoughul - and always very generously made me for the many quesons I asked of him over the years. Together Bill and Hilary have enhanced the life not only of my family but of many many Kincaids and kinsmen across the world through the years. Brigadier Bill will be very much missed and remembered by our clansfolk with huge respect. I have included his military obituary and order of service for his memorial service too. On a lighter note a friend brought to my aenon a newly published trilogy of novels by Lily Blackwood. They are called ‘The Beast of Clan Kincaid’, ‘The Rebel of Clan Kincaid’ and ‘The Warri- or of Clan Kincaid’! Fellow Kincaids, Kinsfolk, Friends, First of all I want to start with a huge and heartfelt “Thank You Bob” for having produced the most beautiful editions of our Defender for the past few years and a truly enormous “Welcome Emily”! I am absolutely delighted that Emily Silversparre has stepped into the role of Communications Director and creator of our Defender newsletter. The Chief’s Column (continued) I feel it is my business to know about the books. From first impressions there is plenty of de-scription and action - on any page opened it is easy to find plenty of excitement e.g. “I am not alone” answered Magnus, staring into his eyes. “I carry the spirit of all the Kincaids in my blood” (!!) – very exciting! The next occasion of note to be looked forward to, from our Clan Kincaid point of view, is the Royal Military Edinburgh Tattoo this summer. Here at home we are thinking ahead to our Clan playing our part on a (hopefully sunny) summer evening in Edinburgh. We are looking forward enormously to being able to share it with those who are able to come and join in. Giles, with his military connec-tions, has arranged for a Scots Guards Piper to be with us for the evening which really is the icing on the cake for us! We who gather in Edinburgh will be proudly representing Clan Kincaid. We will meet as a group in the early evening outside the Castle before the performance begins where we will be given security passes which will allow us into the Great Hall of the Castle to be addressed by the Governer. Whilst in the Great Hall I will enjoy the thought of Kincaids who have been Constables of the castle in days gone by (**Thomas Kincaid of Coates was Constable of Edinburgh Castle in 1511 and 1513 and David Kincaid was Constable in 1542). If we have time we may be able to see the shields around the top of the Great Hall with their dates and the Kincaid Arms alongside all the other Constables. After the address from the Governer the Chiefs are invited to speak to their own Clansfolk for a few moments after which we march, together with the Maclaines, onto the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle amidst the noise and general splendour of all that the 77th Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo has to offer. It promises to be a very exciting evening. We are currently a group of around 40 and the maximum number for a Clan group is 50 so there is still room to join the fun. If anyone else would like to join in please be sure to let President David or me know by email your seat number and I can pass it on the the Tattoo management to ensure you will be able to join the Clan march. The more the merrier! James Brisbin is very kindly arranging a day trip on 23rd August from Edinburgh to the Kincaid home-lands so again, do please get in touch with James if you would like to know more. ([email protected]) Here’s to a wonderful summer! On a family note it is exam season in our house. Angus will be sitting his A level examinations over the next few weeks before embarking on a ‘Gap year’. He can’t wait to get exams behind him and and plans to travel far and wide before he starts a University course in the Autumn of 2018 so if any of you get a knock on your door… Not real-ly don’t worry! Lastly, I want to thank every one of you who have sent good wishes to Giles as he is going through the trials and trib-ulations of cancer treatment again. We have been so moved, touched, and blessed by people’s kindness and sup-port. Yours aye, Arabella.

As I typed, I found myself wondering what the duties of a Constable of the castle were in those days and how a person was appointed. This is what I discovered: **The History of the High Constables of Edinburgh: abridged extracts from ‘Electric Scotland’s Classified Directory. The word "Constable" is, by some authorities, derived from the Saxon words "Koning" and "Stapel," signifying a support of the King; and by others from the Latin words "Comes" and "Stabuli," denoting a master of the horse. Every Constable exer-cised a criminal jurisdiction within the district attached to his castle. In Scotland, throughout the kingdom, and especially in the more important towns, there existed royal castles, established at once for the defence of the country and the preserva-tion of order. Each of these castles was governed by an officer called a "Constable," who enjoyed certain lands attached to the office, known as "Constable lands," and exercised jurisdiction, frequently civil as well as criminal, over a circumscribed territory around his fortress. Some Constableships became hereditary whilst others of these offices were granted for life but some, and among these probably the most important, like the Constableships of the castles of Edinburgh, Stirling, and during the earlier portion of its history, Dumbarton, were conferred during the royal pleasure, for a period of years, or for life.

A Message from the President P A G E 3

Clan Kincaid had a very successful year 2016. We had 80 members and friends attend the Longs Peak Gathering in Estes Park, Colorado where we were an honored Clan. We were delighted to have our Chief, Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid, and her husband Giles Inglis-Jones attend the Gathering. Commissioners did a wonderful job representing Clan Kincaid at Scottish Highland Games in the USA and in Canada. Congratulations are in order for our newest member of Clan Kincaid Board of Officers, Chief Commissioner Karen Da-vis. She will be in contact with Commissioners to help them in any way she can. I also want to congratulate another new member of our Board of Officers, Membership Secretary Donna Knauss. She will be keeping track of our past and current members in order to keep us informed and to assist with the distribution of our newsletter. Last but not least, I want to congratulate our most recent member of the Board of Officers, Com-munications Director Emily Silversparre. She has been busy getting this latest issue of “The Defender” published and distributed. I know these new Officers will do a wonderful job for Clan Kincaid. Clan Kincaid looks forward to an outstanding 2017. In August many of us will be attending the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh where our Chief, Madam Arabella, and Clan Kincaid will be honored. Commissioners throughout the around North America will again be representing Clan Kincaid at Highland Games from spring to fall.

I hope you have a wonderful year! In kinship, David

Greetings, I am very honored to be able to serve the Clan Kincaid Association as Chief Commissioner. I extend my hearty thanks to Suzanne Hakeos who has done an excellent job in launching this posi-tion. We currently have 19 commissioners spanning the United States and Canada who give their time and energy representing our clan association at numerous events across the land. I would like to see that number increased in the future. Being a commissioner is an enjoyable and rewarding way to get to know Kincaid kin and meet other clans as well. If you have any questions or would like infor-mation on becoming a commissioner, please feel free to contact me.

In kinship, Karen Davis

Contributed by James Brisbin Let’s Have a Ceilidh! What’s a Ceilidh you say??? (Pronounced “Kay Lee”) Well – it’s a party – a gathering! The term itself is not all that old dating back only a couple a hundred years but the concept is ancient. In its purist form a Ceilidh is a gathering of people to dance and sing and share stories. It can be a reunion of a family or simply a gathering of friends. There can be pre-planning complete with arranging for a band or it can be entirely impromptu which can be much more fun and spontaneous if the participants are out-going and willing to step forward and make things happen. I remember attending an evening prayer ser-vice in the Isle of Iona Abbey off the west coast of Scotland in 2008. Following the benediction, the minister announced that there would be a Ceilidh in the Town Hall immediately following the service. I think the idea came up during the service. Just about everyone attended. There were perhaps 30 to 40 there. Some-one had brought an accordion - there was dancing and singing. One gentleman stood up and recited a poem he had written – it was corny and did not go over very well but no one – particularly the gentleman reciting – seemed to care. I told a couple of Scottish jokes that brought about laughs. It was great fun – a truly mem-orable experience. We had a Ceilidh one evening during the 2014 Clan Kincaid Gathering. There was a band and we danced up a storm. We had participants who told stories of their Kincaid families – even with costumes! We sang and told jokes and generally had a marvelous time. Why not host a Ceilidh at your home/club/church/hall? Invite a bunch of family and/or friends over telling them in advance to leave their inhibitions at home and get into the spirit of having fun by contributing to the entertainment. You could even serve haggis and share a “Wee Dram” of the “Water of Life”. (Scotch)

Greetings from the Communication Director I would like to thank Bob for providing us all with our quarterly newsletter these past years! It was always such a treat to get to hear about Clan Kincaid events. Thank you, Bob! As was announced in prior Defender Issues, we were to be without a Communications Director moving forward, and subsequently would not be receiving fu-ture Defender issues until the position was filled. I did not declare my intent to become Communication Director for CKAI until after the next issue (March 2017) would have traditionally been released. So, for 2017 we will be short one issue of the Defender. The next issue will be out in September. I invite all clansfolk to please send me any articles, announcements, and photos that you would like to see in a fu-

ture Defender issue. You can email me at [email protected]. I would also like to encourage anyone looking for news or contact information in between is-sues of the Defender to refer to our Clan Kincaid Association International website. You can find pictures from prior events, links to our clan history, Wee Shopper links, and much more! The website is www.clankincaid.org. Please reach out with any questions!

North American Champion Bass Drummer Contributed by James Brisbin

David Lyle Kincaid (Member #1125) of Thamesford, Ontario has been playing the Bass Drum for almost 4 decades in a variety of ensembles including 38 years with the Ingersoll Pipe Band. This past year both David and The London Firefighters Pipe Band in which he plays were awarded the prestigious position of first place in North America Pipe Band Championships among the Grade 5 Pipe Bands entered in the com-petition which was held in Maxville, Ontario. David is also a former Grade 1 (the highest Grade) U. S. Champion Bass Drummer having won that dis-tinction in Alma, Michigan in 1981. While David has played in virtually all grades of competition, his re-cent interest in the beginning level of Grade 5 has shown his dedication to seeing the young people who are just beginning their musical careers with pipe bands develop the interest, skills and passion needed to fully enjoy the fellowship, accomplishments and entertainment to most appreciative audiences at Scottish Festivals, Burns Nights and Community Parades. David and his wife Patricia live in Southern Ontario, Canada where he enjoys his retirement after a successful career as a Senior Computer Oper-ations Analyst with Avco Finance. In addition to his interests in Scottish Music, he is also interested in model railroading and active with his Ma-sonic Lodge and the Mocha Shrine in London, Ontario where he also plays Bass Drum for the Royal Scots O’Mocha Pipe Band. David and Patricia have one daughter, Amanda, and a new grandson, Connor. His other two “children” are his 1965 Corvette and his 1970 Nova S. S. Congratulations, David, on your accomplishment. Your Clan is proud of you. The following links show David in action with his championship band. https://youtu.be/oiHx4y2Qprc https://www.facebook.com/LondonFireFightersPipeBand/

Summer Games The Scottish Highland Games and Festival season is now upon us and will continue almost every weekend for the remainder of the summer. What could be a better way to display your Scottish heritage than by

wearing a wide array of Clan Kincaid apparel and other items bearing our Clan Crest logo? Several of our commissioners have previously purchased Kincaid tartan fabric for use in decorating their

tents and displays for their respective games and festivals. Why not join them and follow their lead by hav-ing a variety of Wee Shopper merchandise available for your Kincaid cousins at your events?
