Message from the Chair

“Only in the present do things happen”

Jorge Luis Borges

In the past, circumstances resulted in the DOSR losing senior faculty and substantial subspecialty expertise.

In the future, the DOSR ardently aspires to be the premier clinical service at UTMB, the premier regional provider of

orthopedic care, and among the premier academic surgery departments in the country (our mission statement!).

We have certainly been resilient, and our prospects appear bright. But achieving our destiny will depend upon more

than simply our pedigree or vision. It is exciting that our faculty is finally growing…it is imperative, however, that we

continue to work hard, and make the most of our opportunities.

Sports Injury Clinic

On August 30, 2014, the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes

opened the Saturday Sports Injury Clinic. The clinic offers walk-ins and

same-day appointments for local athletes from 9 a.m. to noon every

Saturday through November 8.

The clinic will be staffed by DOSR sports medicine physicians Kenneth Brooks,

MD, Nicholas Maassen, MD, and Brian Smith, MD, as well as radiologists

and physical therapists. See more at utmbhealth.com/sports.

“There are so many times when a young player will go to an emergency room after suffering an

injury, get stabilized, then have to wait several more days to see an orthopedic specialist,

several more days for X-rays, CT scans or MRIs and several more days to begin physical

therapy. Our Saturday Sports Injury Clinic eliminates all that waiting. Injured athletes can get

complete evaluation and treatment and even begin rehabilitation with a full partnership

between our physical therapists and the school’s trainers. There is no better way to get back on

the field safely and in the shortest time possible.” --Dr. Brian Smith
