THE WILSON FAMILY

George Washington Wilson was the son of Irish immigrants who came to South Carolina during the early years of the nineteenth century. Little is known about the family until nearly fifty years later. The family Bible re-cords George's birth as July 1, 1816. The record in the Bible begins with George's marriage to Margaret O'Flinn on August 26, 1846. Subsequently, the birth of each of their seven children is recorded along with marriage data and death dates of some of the children.

Only fragments remembered and recollected from conversations with the patriarch of this family sketch provide any information about his early life in the South Carolina low-country. His last surviving son, James Mendenhall Wilson, recalled the following bits from what he remembered about his father and recounted them to his sister,Lydia Wilson Freeland, in a conversation on December 24, 1964, at his home in the Walnut Grove section east of the city of Orangeburg.

George Washington Wilson had few relatives. He had an only sister older than he. Their father had died when George was a boy about eight years of age. The sister married about that time and moved away, leaving George and his mother on a small farm between Walterboro and Charleston. With one spotted pony, they planted and cultivated corn, potatoes,peanuts, and rice. George's only schooling was received by his riding the same spotted pony fifteen miles to school.

George's first job was driving a loaded supply wagon to Charleston and bringing it back loaded with groceries from the port city. He was fourteen years old when he ventured into the trade lanes between the Charleston warehouses and the back-country, still only sparsely settled in the 1830's.

It is known that he mastered the skills of carpentry. At first, he did carpenter work with others and later took on the building of houses himself. From the Walterboro area, he moved to Branchville, where he built a number of houses. One house that he built remains today near Bowman. It is known as the "Mike Arant house." While living at Branchville, it is likely that he became employed with the South Carolina Railroad, which was expanding northward from this first railroad juction. For it is known that he later moved to Orangeburg and served as roadmaster for the Southern Railway Company during the years of the War Between the States. He was charged with the respon-sibility of keeping the tracks open for movement of troops to and from Columbia. For this wartime effort, the United Daughters of the Confederacy awarded him a service cross which they placed upon his grave in Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

In Orangeburg, George and Margaret Wilson and their six surviving children lived in a house which they owned on Railroad Avenue, later known as South Boulevard. The residence faced the main line of the Southern Rail-road and was situated on a site where the Elk's Club now stands at the corner of South Boulevard and John C. Calhoun Drive.

Three years after the end of the War, Margaret Wilson died at the age of forty-eight on April 23, 1868. She was buried in the churchyard of the First Baptist Church, where the family worshipped. No tombstone exists; the graves in that section of the churchyard were covered by the building of an annex known as Davis Hall.

Although the subject of this family history is concerned mainly with the descendants of George Washington Wilson and his second wife, Evan Catherine Bozard, it is fitting to include information in regard to the first marriages of both and to list the children of those first marriages.

Rufus Whitmore was the son of George Whitmore who lived near Elloree. He served in the Confederate Army and died at Charleston of yellow fever. His coffin was returned home in an open wagon for burial in the family burying ground south of the town of Elloree. Evan and Rufus had one child, a daughter, Otis Whitmore.

George Washington Wilson had been a widower for several months when he met the widow Evan Catherine Bozard Whitmore, who was visiting relatives next door to the Wilson home on Railroad Avenue in Orangeburg.

On September 20, 1868, George married Evan. They continued to reside in the house with the six Wilson children. Evan's daughter, Otis Whitmore lived with her grandmother, Martha Ann Austin, in the Four Holes Community.

The Wilsons lived on Railroad Avenue until 1877, when George bought a farm northeast of Bowman and moved his large family to the country. The Wilson homplace is now owned and occupied by J.E.Gramling, Jr., a grandson-in-law and widower of Hazel Wilson Gramling.

The first four children of George and Evan were born in Orangeburg; the latter five children were born on the farm. After moving to the country, the Wilsons attended Walnut Grove Baptist Church, about two miles southeast of the home place. Six of their nine children are buried in the fenced-in cemetery beside the church.

He was at first a school teacher in Orangeburg and Dorchester counties. In the late 1890's he established himself as a merchant in Orangeburg as the owner of D.S. Wilson Dry Goods and Millinery at 37 West Russell Street(now 136-142 Russell S.E.). He is buried at Walnut Grove Church Cemetery.

She helped her brother Durham (D.S.) in the store which he operated in Orangeburg and made a home for him in the second-floor living area above the business until his death in 1916. She continued to live there for about ten years and to operate the business with her sister, Lydia Wilson Freeland, with whom she made her home. The two sisters went out of business at the end of 1929.

George and Esther lived near Bowman, S.C. on Highway #210 where he carried on a large and successful farm and dairy operation. At one time, he served as Postmaster at Bowman. Like his father W. Hampton Patrick, George filled a role of leadership in the community and in the church, having been along with his father one of the founders of the Southern Methodist Church at Bowman and of the denomination. Esther was known for her many contributions to the musical life of the community, her foster-ing of music in the lives of those around her, and for her gift of song.
