The Dinah Shore ScholarshipInformation for Scholarship Applicants
The Dinah Shore Scholarship was established in 1994 by The LPGA Foundation to honor the late Dinah Shore, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, a Hollywood entertainer, and an honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. The Dinah Shore Scholarship is granted annually to a female high school senior who is pursuing a college education, but will not be playing collegiate golf. The Dinah Shore Scholarship receives tremendous support from Kraft Foods, Inc., the Fund’s largest corporate donor, and the Kraft Nabisco Championship, one of the LPGA Tour’s four major championships.
One scholarship in the amount of $5,000.00 will be awarded in 2014.
BACKGROUND ___________________________________________________
The daughter of (Russian) Jewish immigrant parents, Frances Rose Shore was born in 1916 in Winchester, Tennessee. At her parents’ urging, she postponed her interest in a singing career to pursue an education, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1938. Shore then followed her dream and moved to New York, where she became known as “Dinah,” after the song she made famous.
Abelovedsingerandactressforoverfifty-fiveyears,Dinahgotherfirstbreakbysinging with another hopeful singer, Frank Sinatra. Her early career coincided with WorldWarII,andsheperformedforthetroopsasthefirstfemaleUSOperformeroverseas, as well as making over 300 Armed Forces Radio Broadcasts. Known for her southern charm and husky singing voice, Dinah had a string of hit records, a radio show,andin1951,wasthefirstwomantohostherowntelevisionvarietyshow,
“The Dinah Shore Show.” She later hosted “The Dinah Shore Chevy Show,” sponsored by Chevrolet, where she made famous the sponsor’s theme song, “See the USA in Your Chevrolet.”
Despite a bout with polio as a young child, Dinah played tennis and golf, and later established one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour, the Colgate/Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle Golf Championship—now the Kraft Nabisco Championship, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. She tirelessly promoted the game and enlisted many of her show business friends to play inpro-amtournaments.Forhereffortsonbehalfofwomen’sgolf,afterherdeath,Dinah Shore was made an honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame.

The Dinah Shore Scholarship is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Dinah Shore Scholarship Fund. The objective of the Dinah Shore Scholarship award is to grant a scholarship to a female high school senior who played golf during high school and is pursuing a college education in the United States, but will not be playing on a competitive collegiate golf team.
SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA __________________________________________
1. Applicants must be female and a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal resident. 2. Applicantsmustbehighschoolseniorsacceptedtoattendafull-timecourseof
study at an accredited college or university in the United States. 3. Applicants must have played in a minimum of 50% of a high school golf team’s
scheduled events or has played golf “regularly” for the past two years. 4. Applicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. 5. Applicants will not be playing on a competitive collegiate golf team.

The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship Fund. Established in 2006, the objective of the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is to provide a need-based scholarship to a female high school senior from a recognized minority background (see Scholarship Criteria), who will be pursuing a full-time course of study and playing collegiate golf at an accredited college or university in the United States.
One scholarship in the amount of $1,250.00 will be awarded in 2014.
BACKGROUND ___________________________________________________
The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship was established by her daughter, Denise McBride, to recognize her mother’s notable contributions to the game of golf. Phyllis G. Meekins became a member of the LPGA in 1981 and earned LPGA Teaching and Club Professional life status in 2001. Known for her dedication to junior golf, Phyllis Meekins established the Phyllis G. Meekins (PGM) Golf Clinic, Inc. at Mount Airy’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1973. Under Meekins’ guidance, thousands of students have participated in the PGM Golf Clinics, and through developing life skills such as perseverance, goal setting, self-discipline and leadership, many have also gone on to achieve significant success–both in the classroom, as well as in their careers.
An African-American, Meekins was inducted into the National Afro-American Golfers Hall of Fame in 1984. She also received the National Golf Foundation’s Outstanding Service Award. Meekins was a firm believer in the concept, “knowledge withheld is useless,” and wanted her PGM clinics to share the beneficial aspects of golf with all youth, especially those who otherwise would not be exposed to the sport.

The Marilynn Smith Scholarship is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Marilynn Smith Scholarship Fund. Established in 1999 by Marilynn with the proceeds of a golf tournament she organized, the objective of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship is to provide a scholarship to a female high school senior who has played golf in high school or in her community, and is planning to play golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. Special consideration will be given to need-based applications.
Ten scholarships, in the amount of $5,000.00 each, will be awarded in 2014.
BACKGROUND ___________________________________________________
One of the original thirteen founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, Marilynn is known as one of golf’s greatest ambassadors. Her sunny smile, outgoing personality, and natural enthusiasm earned her the well-deserved nickname, “Miss Personality.” Marilynn’s varied contributions to the golf world are noteworthy. Originally from Kansas, Marilynn won three straight Kansas State Amateur titles (1946-48), as well as the Women’s Intercollegiate title in 1949 while attending her alma mater, the University of Kansas. During her career as a pro, Marilynn had 21 career victories, including 2 majors, and became the first player in LPGA history to record a double eagle. Marilynn also made history when she became the first female television commentator at a men’s golf tournament in 1973.
Additional accomplishments include serving as President of the LPGA from 1958-60, co-founding the teaching division (now known as LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals), and organizing the first senior women’s professional golf tournament, the Marilynn Smith Founders Classic. Marilynn helped conduct more than 4,000 clinics worldwide and instructed more than 250,000 golfers. As one of the true pioneers of women’s golf and in recognition of her tireless efforts to promote the game of golf to women, Marilynn was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006 through the Lifetime Achievement category. This letter should also include the applicant’s personal, academic, and professional goals, chosen discipline of study, and how this scholarship will be of assistance. (Please limit to no more than two pages).
4. Three letters of recommendation from the following individuals are required and must accompany the completed application form:
(a) High school coach or golf course/club junior golf program director or instructor; (b) High school teacher, counselor or principal; and (c) Local community representative or business leader.
