There once was an evil scientist named Dr. Utley who liked to bring misery to the world. Because of this, he was sent to live in the Sahara Desert for the rest of his life. That is why he spent his lifetime making a poison that would disrupt the balance of nature. Each day he got closer to this dream and soon it became reality. Dr. Utley had made a toxic liquid that would destroy…

The water cycle! He said, “ This way everyone will know what it’s like to be thirsty everyday, and they will regret their decision of bringing me here.” His mind was so clogged up with revenge that he didn’t realize what the consequences would be. If all water is gone, the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation would be eliminated. Plus, the plants would die from no water so the process of transpiration would be gone.

Still, Dr. Utley filled his laser with his poison and sprayed it into the atmosphere.

“Muahhhhhhhahahaha!” he exclaimed. As the toxic fumes spread across the

world, panic broke out.

Page 5: The Dissolver

In less then five minutes, all the water in the world was gone!

Therefore, all the sea animals in the world had died. Plus, there

was no more water at the beach and in swimming pools!

Children and grown-ups everywhere were disappointed and

scared, but Dr.Utley was very satisfied with what he did.

Scientists all over the world were deciding what was going to happen if this water crisis continues. Their end result was that all animals, humans, and plants would die from lack of water, food, and because the other cycles would fall apart. Because of this, police officers investigated who did this horrible thing, and came up with the conclusion that Dr. Utley is the culprit. Wanted posters of him scattered the world and chaos continued.

Meanwhile, Montauk and his porcupine side-kick, Vladimir,

were just hanging out when the head quarters phone rang.

Montauk ran to answer the phone as Vladimir stood by to

listen. “What? Dr. Utley has taken all the water, including run-

off water and ground water? All right, I’ll be right down!”

Page 8: The Dissolver

As Montauk and Vladimir rushed to Dr. Utley’s laboratory, he was wondering what would happen to the other cycles since the water cycle collapsed? His conclusion was that if all plants die from

lack of water, the process of photosynthesis (in the carbon cycle) would be gone so animals cant get their carbon, or return carbon to the atmosphere. The Nitrogen cycle would also disappear because the soil would dry out and no lightning would occur because of lack of clouds, so nitrogen fixation would not occur.

When Montauk arrived to Dr. Utley’s lab, he immediately sneaked up on him and tied him up. He forced Dr. Utley to tell him how to fix the water cycle or he would remain tied up forever. So Dr.Utley yelled, “I SURRENDER!” Then a switch and a box with a lock appeared. He said, “ You need to press the switch and an antidote will appear and you need to launch it in a laser.”

Page 10: The Dissolver

As Montauk did as he said, the antidote appeared before him

just as Dr.Utley said it would. Trusting his words, he launched the strange liquid into the laser and a dark

blue mist spread throughout the world and water appeared

once again.

As Montauk and Vladimir were in their home as hero’s,

they peered outside their window. They saw rain coming from

the clouds and sighed a big relief. The water cycle was safe and

so was the world.

GlossaryPrecipitation: movement of water from the

atmosphere to the land.Evaporation: water moving from the land to the

atmosphere.Run-off: water that does not seep into the ground,

but rather flows on top of it.Ground water: when water seeps into the ground,

where it is stored in places like underground caverns.Condensation: when water vapor cools to form a

liquidTranspiration: a form of evaporation from the

surface of living things.
