The Distributor May 2015
Director’s Chair May 2015
The first outing for many of our club members this year was the National Membership Meeting in Joliet.
Many Illinois Region members drove their cars there joining a group of approximately 40 “A s”. Thursday
night’s activity was a tour and dinner in the famous Rialto Theater. The 90 year old building is a treasure
featuring (among other things) the largest crystal chandelier and theater pipe organ in the country. Friday
and Saturday’s activities included numerous tech talks, self-guided tours, and dinners. A truly well
rounded meet was enjoyed by all.
The fantastic stops on the Garage Tour this year kept our large club turnout fascinated for hours on April
19. Gar Williams’ home on an airplane runway had several interesting projects underway. The Model A
engine powered plane drew a lot of interest. Gar explained the differences with the engine when applied to
aeronautical use. Further south in Romeoville Jordan Beller opened up a one of a kind Ford collection and
restoration shop. The huge immaculate warehouse displayed nearly 100 cars and trucks. Many rare styles
and accessories were displayed and explained in detail. An abundance of “barn fresh” original vehicles
with many sporting original paint and upholstery. I particularly enjoyed viewing several trucks featuring
original hand painted advertising on them. A 1951 International Metro brought back nice memories as I
reminisced about learning to drive on one. A big thank you to Jerry Lyons for hosting this event with Gar
Williams and Jordan Beller that made for a memorable outing.
At the April Business Meeting we reintroduced our club mini swap and club accessories sales table. Bob
Friskics and Mark Maron will oversee this endeavor. We will offer many clothing accessories with our
club logo for purchase. We will take offers for specific sizes as well.
Our driving season is here. See you at the many events coming up.

Illinois Region – Business Meeting April 7, 2015
Meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM by Dan Pritchett. Dan
welcomed everyone. Motion made and seconded to approve the
March Business Meeting minutes as printed in the Distributor.
Old Business
Dan reported on the Board of Directors Meeting. They met and
put the Constitution in its complete form. Members will be given
copies and a vote will be taken in October. Because of the in-
crease of $600 this year for the rent of the American Legion Hall,
we are looking into the possibility of moving the meeting to a
different location. Val Koepke is going to chair a committee to
evaluate and look for potential places to go. We are looking at
cost and location. She will collect all suggestions and then bring
it back to the members to vote. In the meantime, if you have a
potential location, talk to Val. Dan wanted to start selling some
shirts and jackets this year. Bob Friskics is going to handle the
mini swap and the shirts. We can take orders tonight, and we will
get them by the next meeting. The budget was approved for
2015. We should be in good financial position this year because
of the parades and swap.
World of Wheels – Mark Maron reported there were 7 people
who brought their cars out. The purpose was to have fun and
show the other side of the hobby. We had a great response. Lots
of members took awards for their cars. We got an award for out-
standing club display. No one expected that. There were three
long days and we plan to do it next year. Dan thanked Ken who
made multiple trips back and forth and was there every minute it
was open.
Bowling Party - Mike Kochevar reported there were 21 people
and everyone had a great time.
Winter Swap Meet – March 20, 2016 was confirmed for next
year. Dan read a letter he wrote to thank Friendly Ford for
providing us with a venue to host the 2015 Swap Meet. Melinda
went to the dealership, and it was confirmed we could hold the
meet again next year at that venue.
New Business
Treasurer’s Report - Don Morman reported the financials as
printed in the magazine. We have a balance of $7,161.48.
Editor – Steve Sarasin indicated he has picked up a couple of
cards for advertising and he thanked everyone for their contribu-
tions.
Teen Activity – No report
Activities Report –
Barnstormers Days - Roger Halverson introduced a representative
from Galt airport who invited us to the Barnstormer Days event
on June 13. The purpose is to get vintage airplanes out, and they
want to get a lot of old cars out there. Their club wants to do
whatever they can to accommodate our members. June 14 is the
rain date. The breakfast is from 8:30 – 2:00 and there is no ad-
mission charge.
Garage Tour - Jerry Lyons said that Gar Williams has airplanes
and Model A s and Jordan Beller has a load of cars. Lunch is at
White Fence Farm. Cost is $21.50 for chicken, salads, fritters,
beverage, tip, baked potatoes, ice cream, etc. There is a little mu-
seum there. Roger will be taking the group from McDonalds at
9:15 and there will be donuts and coffee at Gar Williams’ home.
The Route 66 Spring Overnighter - Steve Sarasin reported that the
May 2 event will begin with breakfast in Hinsdale, then tour to
Joliet and then Pontiac for the night and we will return on Sun-
day. We are going to be participating in the Red Carpet Corridor
special event. Highlights include free admission to historical mu-
seum in Joliet, National cemetery outside of Joliet, garage sales,
vintage gas stations, lots of events along the way. The group can
stay together or go separately. At 2:30 there is a gathering point
at the Ford dealership in Gardner. If you are attending you need
to call and book your room. Information is on the table. Call
Steve with any questions.
ABC Meet – Roger Halverson pointed out that this is not fine
point judging, but it is an opportunity to see what judging is all
about and you can learn more about your car. There are three
categories. It is a nice park. The family event is from 10AM to
4PM. The sign-up sheet is on the table and Mike Podgorski can
answer any questions.
Parades – John Drengenberg reported that we have a lot of mem-
bers who have signed up but we still need more cars. There will
be six parades this year. This would be the time to lock in the
suburb/suburbs where you want to participate.
Club Sales – Mark Maron showed all the items that are available.
He and Bob Friskics will be taking orders and selling what is
there. Bob Friskics will also be running the mini-swap during the
business meetings.
Announcements - Sue Szymanski reported that former member
Terry Brendle passed away. Congratulations to Frank Smith and
Barbara who are getting married this Friday, April 10. Today is
Jerry Lyons birthday.
New Member Coordinator – No guests.
Awards and Dash Plaques - Chris Rozny reminded members that
she needs information on mileage. She gave out perfect attend-
ance awards to Jim Stockinger, Andy Stockinger, and Gus Otte.
Mike Kochevar received an award for the Swap Meet and Bowl-
ing. See Chris about ordering dash plaques if you are running a
driving event.
Membership – Mike Kochevar reported we have 122 signed up
members and two new members. Peter Troost has a 1930 Tudor
and a Model T. Peter is from Skokie. Jerry Tish is a new mem-
ber he does not have a car, but he wants one. He is from Chica-
go.
National Events – Membership Meeting starts this Thursday in
Joliet. Ron is doing a seminar on steering columns. It is literally
one hour and 53 minutes from here. It is nice to go there and
show support for their club. This summer the National Meet is in
Niagara Falls. It is going to be a great meet. Mark said that you
need a driver’s license, passport (or passport card) and registra-
tion. It might be a good idea to call your insurance company and
let them know you are going to Canada. The Canadian club has
made the border aware of this event and it will be easy to cross
the border.
Greeter- Mark Maron reported that we have 45 members signed
in and one Model A.
Dan reminded members about the mini swap table. Mark has
flyers and posters for our Winter Swap.
Jim and Andy Stockinger told joke and held raffle.
Motion was made and seconded for adjournment.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Melinda Pritchett

I found my 1930 Model A in Mason City Ill. in 1968. It was still drivable and used for this farmer's Sunday go to
fishing car. The rest of the week it was his chicken coupe. I talked him into selling it to me, so three friends of mine
drove back the following Sunday to drive it back to Skokie Ill. That was a 200 mile trip I will never forget. After a
12 hour trip home, with everything that was loose, falling off and stopping to put it back on we made it back. By
now it was dark and we found that we had some headlights working but no tail light. So I lit and hung a red railroad
lantern on the back spare tire and started the last mile home. Then a Skokie police car pulled us over. After he heard
the story of our long trip and never getting stopped by the state police and our unusual tail light, he let us go home,
saying my wife will never believe me.
I wanted to know how to make a good car out of it and a friend said he saw in the news paper that there was a
Model "A" club that met every month In Chicago. I went to a meeting, met with Ron and Ken Ehrenhofer and they
invited me to join the club. That was in June of1968. Since I was running Brown’s TV and Appliance in Evanston I
would work on the car late at night when I could. I was told by club members that to do right take it down to the last
small part and restore it back to like new. That's what I did. I found that being in the club was very helpful. just a
great bunch of people. I made a lot of good friends and we still are. It took me three years to get it running again and
it was a great learning experience. I learned a lot of new skills and they led to a teaching job after I sold the TV
store in 1977, at Harper College and at Truman College. I tought Electronics for twenty years at Harper. I've been a
member all this time, except for about 4 years while I was going through a divorce. My car has gone through a few
upgrades for safety reasons but it has been a wonderful Hobby. I have driven 23,000 miles since I restored it and
have had very good luck with it and no major problems. It fits in to my many other hobbies' Model railroading,
Country music, antique radio and phonographs restoring and photography.
See you on the roads.

TECH TALK - Prepping Your Model A For A Trip

This is not about restoring your car, but preparing you restored car for a trip. What you do now is dependent on what
you have done and when. The general rule is to do the work in your driveway and not on the road. It is a little of a

Fashion In The Model A Era (1928-1931): Sunglasses- get ready for summer
Early sunglasses served a special purpose and it wasn't to block the rays of the
sun. For centuries, Chinese judges had routinely worn smoke-colored quartz
lenses to conceal their eye expressions in court. It wasn't until the 20th century
that modern-type sunglasses came to be. In 1929, Sam Foster, founder of the
Foster Grant company sold the first pair of Foster Grant sunglasses on the
Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ. By 1930, sunglasses were all the rage.
