The District Council of Mount Barker is again thrilled to be the principal organiser and sponsor of the 2010 Mount Barker JAZZfest. Mount Barker has fast become the focal point for jazz in South Australia and is widely supported; not just from the general public, but from the media and jazz industry in other parts of Australia, including other significant Jazz festivals held in Victoria.This year we are delighted to welcome Australian jazz legends Don Burrows and Bob Barnard as our featured guests. Over 30 jazz bands will participate in and around Mount Barker’s town centre throughout the weekend! The Main Stage (Bluestone Stage) is located at the Wallis Tavern, Auchendarroch House.We are also pleased to have SteamRanger involved again this year running their special Jazz Trains (Rail Cars) from Mount Barker.

Jazzfest - the focal point for jazz

in South Australia!

Auchendarroch House, Wallis Theatres Complex Mount Barker will be the focal point again for this year’s Mount Barker JAZZfest, with the Bluestone Stage located in the Wallis Tavern.

Nearly 30 hours of jazz will emanate from the main stage over the three days with highlights including guest appearances by Don Burrows and Bob Barnard. The festival will also feature a special trip down memory lane with Don Burrows and the acclaimed Adelaide Connection Jazz Choir. A special Jazz Worship Service on Sunday morning (23 May) will take place.

The venue offers a range of fine food and wines and also provides all weather temperature control.

The Bluestone Stage kicks off on Friday 21 May with a JAZZ lunch (from $9.90) starting 12noon with Mayor Ann Ferguson, officially opening the festival at 1pm.

Don Burrows is a household name in Australia, renowned for his musicianship and his enthusiastic support for the jazz arts.Don is a multi-instrumentalist and also a composer and one of the world’s finest interpreters of the jazz tradition. Don will make special guest appearances during the 2010 Mount Barker Jazzfest.

Bob Barnard made his first recording at the age of sixteen and was recognized as one of Australia’s most outstanding jazz players before he was twenty years old.Since that time he has become an icon of Australian jazz.

A special Jazz Worship Service will take place on the Bluestone Stage at Auchendarroch House, Wallis Theatres on Sunday morning at 8am. Representatives of the Mount Barker Minister’s Fellowship will lead the Ecumenical Service and the Occasional Address will be given by the Minister of New Life Centre, Pastor Garry Leech.Music will be provided by Bruce Hancock, Don Burrows and the Mt Barker District Concert Band. A Freewill collection will be offered, with proceeds to benefit the Mount Barker Ministers’ Fellowship Carols and Fireworks program to be held on Sunday 12 December 2010.

Don Burrows “Makin’ Whoopee” with the Adelaide Connection on Friday evening. A trip down memory lane featuring the acclaimed “Adelaide Connection” Jazz Choir from the Elder Conservatorium, conducted by its current director Luke Thompson, and a guest appearance by Don Burrows.The choir (which Don named in 1984) toured internationally with him at the height of his recording career at home and overseas. The Bruce Hancock Trio and advanced jazz students from Elder Conservatorium will also feature in this special Mount Barker concert.

Bluestone Jazz TrainsSteamRanger will run special Jazz Trains during the Mount Barker JAZZfest between the Mt Barker Railway Station (end of Gawler St) and the picturesque Bugle Ranges.The 1 hour RAilcAR trip aboard the Bluestone Jazz Train will depart:Saturday 22 May 1pm & 3pm Sunday 23 May 11am, 1pm & 3pmTickets are just $10 and children under five travel free. The talented and popular Peter Hooper Trio will provide jazz entertainment on the train. Guides from the National Trust will host free guided walking tours (pictured below) around the Mount Barker Historic Town Centre Precinct on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 21, 22 & 23 May. Tours run for approx 1 hour and depart from the Commonwealth Bank opposite Millies Bakery at 1.30pm everyday.There are over 60 historic places on the town centre walking route, and the walk provides a nostalgic and informative interpretative experience of the past and present life-style of Mount Barker.You may even run into one of the 30 jazz performances on your walk!

CHICAGO - The Movie Musical

Wallis Cinemas will screen 2 special sessions of the award winning film Chicago during the Mt Barker JAZZfest. Chicago is a 2002 American musical film adapted from the satirical stage musical Chicago, the film explores the themes of ‘celebrity’, ‘scandal’, and ‘corruption’ in Jazz age Chicago. Directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall, and adapted for film by screenwriter Bill Condon, Chicago won six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture. The film was the first musical film to win the Best Picture Oscar since Oliver! (1968). The film stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger, Richard Gere, and Queen Latifah. Following the Sunday performance, the Mt Barker District Big Band will present a musical Program of the “Big Band” jazz era in the theatre foyer.
