Elephantastic trail hunters in for a chance of winning trip to KenyaA family completing the elephant trail after next weekend’s Elephan-tastic charity fund-raiser launch can win a trip to Kenya.

The trail of elaborate and beautiful-ly decorated model elephants will be unveiled on July 26 from 12.30 pm at the Carfax in Horsham, though it will extend to other towns and villages.

Maps of two trails in the town cen-tre and one around the beautiful West Sussex countryside will be available from participating shops for fami-lies to buy for £1 and get navigating throughout the summer.

Each completed trail form will be entered into a prize draw, to win a family holiday trip to an elephant or-phanage in Nairobi, among a selec-tion of other prizes including televi-sions, dining treats and jewellery.

John LeRossignol, of Horsham Ro-tary Club, said: “The countdown is on and there is already a real buzz in the town leading up to the elephant unveiling. We have been astounded by the level of interest and support in the project and now we can’t wait to start.”

Actor Brian Blessed will be at the launch showing his support for the Born Free Foundation, a main ben-efi ciary of the project, alongside well know children’s entertainer Dave Benson Phillips.

The theme ‘Loving Life, in celebra-tion of these unique animals, is aimed at raising awareness around the im-portant preservation of this endan-gered species and to bring in funds to support the build of Born Free Foun-dation’s new elephant sanctuary in Tuscany, the fi rst in Europe.

The elephants will each be placed

in position after the launch, creating two safari trails in the town centre and one in the surrounding country-side.

A mini trail in neighbouring Bill-ingshurst will also be available as well as those in Horsham until August 31.

Horsham Rotary Club created the charity fundraising project, with help from local traders’ organisation Hor-sham Unlimited, the district council and Billingshurst-based marketing agency PMW Communications.

With 128 elephant- owning com-panies now participating and 64 local charities alongside Born Free Founda-tion set to benefi t from the proceeds, the project has more than tripled in

size compared to the similar Giraff e project in Horsham in 2013.

Vic Reeves, Peter Andre, Freddy Flintoff and renowned wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering are just some of the big names to show their support so far.

Many local artists including Lind-say Wright, Juliette Goddard and Zoe Keable are emerging as front runners for the autumn auction, when the pieces of elephant art will go under the hammer.

Thousands of visitors to Horsham’s annual Sparks in the Park event on Sunday were the fi rst to see a few ex-amples from the 185-strong Elephan-tastic herds.

Staff help to fi ght sight conditionWorkers at Vision Express in Hor-sham raised funds during the fi rst Macular Week.

The week highlighted the impor-tance of research funding for the sight condition Macular Degeneration, which might eventually lead to a cure.

Stella Black, regional support and development manager for the Macu-lar Society in the South East, joined the Vision Express team to rally sup-port, as the optical retailer’s stores nationwide dedicated the week to supporting their charity partner.

The team raised money on Satur-day by inviting the public to take part in their in-store “Tea for MD.” The Macular Society also created its own pair of giant heart-shaped sunglasses to mark the week, which toured the UK and visited a number of Vision Ex-press shops.

Horsham Store Manager Emma Beckford, said: “Our thanks go to Stella for coming into store and help-ing with our fundraising eff orts. It’s a great morale boost for the team to do something meaningful for such a good cause, and having her here really spurred us on - every single penny we raise will count, and we thank the local com- m u n i t y for dig- ging deep to sup- port us.”

Grandad’s spirit in the sky for daring SteveAfter Steve Shipp lost his grandad to heart trouble he decided on a dar-ing way to raise money to help other suff erers.

The 22-year-old, who is used to working at somewhere near ground level and dislikes heights, glided 10,000ft to Earth in a sponsored tan-dem skydive. Now he plans a spot of wing walking.

Steve, an emer-gency engineer working at the H o r s h a m depot of gas dis-tribution company SGN, has r a i s e d a b o u t £ 1 , 3 0 0 for the B r i t -ish Heart Foundation and also man-aged to conquer his fear of heights.

Steve lost his grandad Ronald Ingram at 73 to heart failure last December. Determined to keep his memory alive, Steve resolved to raise money for the British Heart Foundation by doing something that would have made his granddad proud.

Steve, who lives with girlfriend Rachel , said: “My grandad had four heart attacks and then last Novem-ber he had a stroke. After everything he went through, it felt like the least I could do.”

Despite having his skydive can-

celled fi ve times because of poor weather, Steve fi nally got to make the jump at Chiltern Park in Oxfordshire. He said afterwards: “I’ve never been so scared in all my life,”

“Sitting on the edge of that plane, looking out onto nothing was sur-real. I nearly backed out, but I’m glad I

didn’t because when I actually jumped it was amazing –

like a daydream.” Donations are still coming in,

but so far Ste-ve has raised

£800 for the foundation in sponsor-ship from f a m i l y , friends and colleagues.

This total has been

boosted by a £500 donation

from SGN’s Into Action fund, which

supports employees who give up their time

to help charities or their local community.

Steve paid tribute to his colleagues and family and said: “The last few months have been made a lot easier by the support of my family and my col-leagues at Sussex depot, all of whom without exception sponsored me to make the jump.”

Determined to continue fundrais-ing in his grandad’s memory Steve is now planning his next challenge – wing walking on a Second World War Stearman biplane.

Villagers have received a £10,000 boost in their campaign to mod-ernise a day centre.

And a community leader has praised the public for supporting the village’s vital bid.

Henfi eld Community Partnership has been awarded the money from the Aviva Community Fund after public votes secured the bid.

The Community Partnership is currently working with West Sus-

sex County Council to transfer the centre over to the partnership and community ownership.

The money from Aviva will be used to refurbish the inside of the Henfi eld Haven at Hewitts, which is at present the county council day centre building.

Partnership chairman Tony Jack-son said: “It is another good news story for Henfi eld.

“Votes for the project were cru-

cial in getting to the fi nal stage, so many thanks to everyone who voted. Defi nite news about the re-launch date of the Haven should be available in August.”

Cllr Peter Catchpole, West Sus-sex County Council’s cabinet mem-ber for adult social care and health, said: “Congratulations to everyone at Henfi eld Community Partnership on winning the £10,000 from the Aviva Community Fund.”

Extreme concern for missing man

The desperate search to fi nd a missing man took an ominous turn this week.

Police said they were extreme-ly concerned for the welfare of 75-year-old Michael Mauger, from Bramber, after a bag he was thought to be carrying was found on a bank of the River Adur near his caravan home.

Michael was reported missing a fortnight ago on July 1, but was

last defi nitely seen in Bramber vil-lage by a friend on June 27. A man fi tting his description was seen at 6am in Bostal Road, Steyning on July 2.

He was described as white, 5' 9" and of medium build with short white hair and a ruddy complex-ion. It is not known what he was last seen wearing, but police said he usually wore a fl oppy sun hat.

George Brown, 93, bikes for charityAt a sprightly 93 George Brown is hitting the saddle on Sunday for charity.

The keen biker from Partridge Green is in “The Big Road Ride” for St Catherines’s Hospice at Crawley.

Riders can register on the day from 9am for a 10am start.

The ride starts and fi nishes at Im-berhorne School in East Grinstead, an eight-minute cycle ride from the railway station and short journey from the Worth Way.

It costs £35 for each adult and un-der 16s are free, with three routes timed 60 mile or 40 mile runs or a family 10 mile nature trail ride.

George, a regular rider, said: "I still experience a very special feeling when I arrive at the start venue. Be-

fore the ride starts I en-joy chatting about cy-cling to other entrants, some of whom I've met year after year and it pleases me to see so many young-sters taking up the sport and accepting the challenge. At my age, I can't describe the wonderful ‘I've done it’ feeling that I experi-ence when I cross the fi nishing line, know-ing that my eff orts have raised lots of sponsor-ship."

Michaela Clements, events fun-draising assistant at St Catherine’s Hospice said :“We're asking every-

one who takes part to raise as much money as they can through sponsorship or donation. Rais-ing just £46 allows a patient to be cared for in the comfort and surroundings of their own home with an hour-long visit from one of our Commu-nity Nurses or £62 provides a counselling session for a bereaved relative. By tak-ing part, you’ll be helping make a real diff erence to local people’s lives.”

Sunshine crowds help Billingshurst Primary School smash records

Supporters who turned out in force have helped Billingshurst Primary School break records for fund rais-ing.

When receipts were added up from its fi fth annual Summer Fun Day, the crowds had created a re-cord-smashing total of £10,081.51, after what organisers say was the biggest and the best event so far.

The attraction was boosted by a busy programme of activities and good weather to bring the crowds out.

As the school’s biggest fundrais-ing event, staff , pupils and families worked together to help make the day such a huge success.

The fun day fi lled the school fi eld and had something for everyone, from well-loved favourites such as face-painting and cake sales to some exciting new additions in the form of bungee bowling and Total Wipeout.

Well-established summer fun day traditions such as the Head Teacher and Deputy Head challenge proved particularly popular with the crowds, as the teachers went head to head on the Bungee Run and Shaun the Sheep Rodeo. The school choir and country dancers enter-tained visitors throughout the day while a team of teachers battled to be crowned Billingshurst BBQ Mas-

terchef, serving more than 200 sau-sages and 200 burgers.

Head teacher Helen Williamson said: “As ever, we are amazed at the grand total from this fundraising event. We were delighted so many people joined us for a fantastic af-ternoon of family entertainment. Behind the fun, we have an incred-ible team who run our parent com-mittee, the BPSCA, and without them this event would not be pos-sible. Thanks to these fundraising eff orts every penny raised goes back to the school, providing opportuni-ties for every child, and for that we are very grateful.” Pictured is action from the afternoon.

Winner of Bicycle and

Country Club competition

Prestigious local companies, Slinfold Golf & Country Club and The Cycle Shop, recently worked together to off er an amazing chance to win a bike worth £750, including a £185 bespoke bike fi tting.

Helen Gaff ney-Berkeley (pictured) was selected as the proud winner of the prize

Collyer’s photography department welcomed industry professionals, including a former Collyer’s student, to speak to the current generation about pursuing a career in the pho-tographic industries.

The day of talks formed part of the department’s summer enrichment activities, which helps to prepare stu-dents for their A-level study, progres-sion onto degrees and pursuing job opportunities.

Award winning professional pho-tographers, Tom Hull and Alex Hill, shared their exciting journeys into the world of commercial/advertising photography and video production. Alex and Tom explained the impor-tance of work experience and entering competitions, as it helps gain expo-sure within the industry. The students were fascinated to hear about their careers, which has included commis-sions for major brands such as: Nike, Ministry of Sound, NSPCC and music video production for popular artists Ben Howard and Rizzle Kicks!

Collyer’s Photography teacher, Anna Staff ord, talked about her pro-ject developed in a recent sabbatical year from teaching. ‘We Participate’ was set up to facilitate participatory led projects in Uganda and Guate-mala, with former street children and under-privileged youth. Participatory photography provides marginalised and disadvantaged communities the opportunity to learn photographic and storytelling skills as a means to repre-sent their lives.

Talented ex-student, Rob Legg, re-turned to take part in the day’s talks. Rob left the college last year after gaining an A grade at A-level Photog-raphy. He spoke to the students about

getting into the photographic indus-try and about his experiences, which have taken him all over the world, in-cluding work assisting a professional car photographer.

Current student, Megan Young, said: “The careers talks were truly inspiring, all the speakers were so enthusiastic about their line of work and that was really encouraging to me as a student. The speakers have encouraged me to pursue a career in

photography, and that although it is diffi cult, it is very worthwhile to be doing something every day which you love so much”.

Alex Hill was equally impressed by the day; he said: “It’s a privilege to be able to share my knowledge with stu-dents who are embarking on an excit-ing creative journey. Hopefully by vis-iting we will have sparked something as they continue to learn and discover the magic of photography.”

Subject Leader, Laura Andrews, added: “It has been a wonderful op-portunity for our students and will help them with future projects and progression. Their enthusiasm and passion for their work has been truly inspiring.”

Scores descend on Southwater for Dino Park opening

Youngsters shared a bony piece of history when Southwater’s Dino-saur Island was opened.

The youngsters saw as part of the busy entertainment programme some original dinosaur bones found in Horsham in the early 1800s that can usually be seen in Horsham Mu-seum.

More than 160 years ago the same bones were the star attraction in the

world’s fi rst theme park, when tens of thousands visited the dinosaur theme park at Crystal Palace.

The Great Iguanodon found at Hor-sham only 11 years earlier in 1839-40 when St Marks Church was being built had been reconstructed to be-come the star attraction using cutting edge science to terrify the visitors.

The Great Horsham iguanodon fossil bones were measured and ex-

trapolated, revealing a monster so large that the day before the recon-struction was revealed a sit down dinner was held in its stomach. A fi re destroyed the replicas and by the time a new set was being made, complete fossils were found in Bel-gium, showing that the early Vic-torian scientists had got it wrong. From then on, the fossils lost their appeal as other discoveries were

thought to be more exciting. The remarkable story of how a

dinosaur found by Horsham’s for-gotten dinosaur hunter, George Bax Holmes became the star attraction in the world’s fi rst theme park is told in a book available at Horsham Museum by John Cooper of Booth Museum Brighton. It is a story of intellectual rivalry, skulduggery and passion for a new science.

About 50 years later another iguanodon was discovered while brick clay was being dug at Southwa-ter. It inspired the Sussex and Dork-ing Brick Company to use its image as the company logo. Then 70 years later that discovery inspired Hor-sham District Council’s parks and countryside team to create a Dino-saur adventure playground, opened last Saturday, for children to enjoy.

Horsham Park buzzed with activity for last Sunday’s Sparks in the Park afternoon.

And the crowds also got the bonus of seeing some of the superb colour model elephants that will be launched in the Elephantastic fund-raiser this Sunday in the Carfax.

Thousands of visitors swarmed to the park to enjoy hours of a wide range of family attractions and activities.

One of the most charming was an Alice in Wonderland tea party re-flecting the fancy dress theme of this year’s show.

A favourite with youngsters was the lure of gleaming fire engines and oth-er equipment at the Horsham Com-munity Safety Showcase run by the emergency services and partners. As well as the fun there was the chance for everyone to learn about the impor-tant work carried out.

Also in the programme was Horsh-am Rotary Club’s charity day, Bensons Fun Fair, Skate Jam, a Sports Zone, a visit from Paddington Bear and the Community Stage.

The returning Sports Zone gave the more energetic the chance to try ac-tivities including football, table ten-nis, basketball, tennis, karate, Nordic walking and outdoor military fitness.

Stay Safe Driving and Kapow Wres-tling, bands and community perfor-mance arts all added to the mix put together by Horsham District Council.

The town’s Rotary Club showcased Horsham’s charitable community, giving people the chance to inquire about projects and serving as a vol-unteer. The club said on its website: “Thank you to all the wonderful peo-ple who made Sparks in the Park once again a fantastic event. Even though the weather was not so great, everyone seemed to be having a great time.”

It's a funny thing this gardening ma-larkey. We often look at gardens as some kind of respite from our daily lives of toil - which is great of course.

I have also noticed that we have a tendency to look at a garden with a sense of fear and trepidation. There is so much to learn and so much to know.

How to look after the garden? How to keep the plants alive? How to keep the animals that visit alive too? Is it designed well? Does it follow the lat-est trend? Does it compare to a show garden?

The grass is invariably never green-er. In fact I read an article recently that explains why the grass always looks greener next door. It is a mixture of psychology and the diff usion of light.

Recently in the news there have been reports of plants causing blisters or be-ing poisonous, as if this had never been discovered before.

Well, as a favour to you all here is a list of the top plants to avoid in the family garden and why.

1. Monkshood (Aconitum). Beautiful. All parts deadly poisonous.

2. Euphorbia species. The plant con-tains a sap that burns throat and eyes.

3. Box. (Buxus). The plant sap con-tains a substance known as buxine that can burn the throat if ingested.

4. Stagshorn (Rhus). The leaves con-tain a substance that blisters the skin.

5. Giant Hogweed. A Gertrude Jeykll favourite. The leaves and stems contain a substance that can cause the skin to blister in the sun.

6. Laburnum. A member of the pea family the seeds look edible. Don't be-lieve this. I spent a day in hospital hav-ing my stomach pumped when I was four years old because I thought they were good snacks. A similar plant with pea like seeds is broom.

7. Solanum. Any member of the po-tato family has the distinct ability to poison if not treated with care. Some more than others. Deadly Nightshade is one to avoid!

8. Rhododendron. Toxic Leaves.9. Chrysanthemums. The leaves can

cause an allergic reaction and the fl ow-ers are quite toxic.

10. Wisteria. Another beautiful and toxic plant that has pea-like fruit. Is there a theme here?

11. Sweet Pea. My children love eat-ing peas straight from the plant, but I have to make sure they always ID the plant before they ingest anything!

Whilst talking of ingesting seeds and berries, try to identify what you have in your hand. The fashion for wild forag-ing is growing and so too are the inci-dents of accidental poisoning.

There are many plants that look pretty, that are not in any way shape or form to be consumed. A short list of the ones you may come across every day is: Holly, Ivy, Asparagus, Horse-chestnut, Broom, Spindle tree, Oak and Privet.

Interestingly Yew leaves and the seed in the berry are toxic. However the red pulp is not - but I do not recom-mend you try this out!

A child-friendly garden Fund-raisers sought for Dame Vera Lynn’s West Sussex charity walk

Walkers are invited to support the charity of wartime singing sweet-heart Dame Vera Lynn that helps children who have a tough start in life.

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust in West Sussex supports babies and children under fi ve living with Cerebral Palsy and other motor learning diffi culties.

The Arundel to Brighton Walk

(the A2B) on September 19 will raise money for the Trust’s work at Ingfi eld Manor School, near Billingshurst.

So far it has raised more than £25,000 and this year the charity says it is looking for more walkers to make it bigger and better.

Starting from Arundel Castle, walk-ers can choose between two distances of 35km, about 21 miles, taking eight

to nine hours, or 12km, about seven miles, taking two to three hours.

Pied A Terre Adventure is helping to organise the walk. There will be regular refreshment stops, plenty of encouragement along the way and a hot meal for everyone on completion.

All fundraisers who reach the £120 fundraising target will be entered into an exclusive draw, with prizes in-cluding a place on the exclusive Bear Grylls Survival Academy course and the use of an Audi Convertible for a week.

The charge is £30 for adults and £10 for under 16’s accompanied by an adult and walkers can sign up by vis-iting www.bit.ly/A2BWalk or by con-tacting Kirstie Betts at Pied A Terre Adventures on 01403 788994 or email [email protected]

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust was set up in 2001 when the national charity Scope announced that it would be un-able to continue funding the School for Parents at Ingfi eld Manor.

Dame Vera, who lives near Ditch-ling, East Sussex, launched an appeal with several of her friends and associ-ates and enough money was raised to continue the service.

Emma Maxwell, a parent of a child at the school said: “My little boy goes to a session at this school once a week and it has been an amazing lifeline for us. We are so grateful for fundraising events like these which ensure we can continue attending the school.”

Residents at West Chiltington will have a rich history of community life behind them when they gather for their Village Show on Satur-day.

The event on July 18 began life as West Chiltington Fete and Flower Show and was founded in 1919 as part of the Peace Celebrations after the First World War.

In 1939, the Second World War halted it, but villagers revived it six years later as part of the village’s victory celebrations.

Inspired by the enthusiasm of the fi rst chairman, Rev. Andrew Caldecott, it rapidly established it-self as a popular feature in the vil-lage calendar and was attended by all the villagers, as well as former residents who returned to share in the show’s fun activities. The late

actor and singer Norman Wisdom, who lived in the area, was one of its supporters.

The afternoon will start at 1.30pm at the recreation ground in Mill Road.

Entertainments will include

stalls, a fun dog show, a produce competition, art and craft displays, vintage cars, a hog roast, a beer tent, and children’s entertainments.

Rock Choir and the West Chil-tington Silver Band will perform , and rock-country band Sold as Seen will be on stage.

Christ’s Hospital students break records with Baccalaureate successStudents at Christ’s Hospital, Hor-sham, achieved the school’s best results in the demanding Interna-tional Baccalaureate Diploma.

The youngsters re-wrote the school’s record books with an im-pressive average score of 37 points, which is equivalent to three A*s and two As at A Level.

With a maximum of 45 points available, two pupils, Lucy Hind-marsh and David Reckers, gained a score of 42 points.

Ulrika Breme and Esther So-rooshian recorded 41 points each, with Tony Lam and Safi a Sangster achieving 40 points.

Overall, one-third of the 18 pupils sitting for the diploma achieved 40 points or above and the school says all have gained grades that refl ect their resilience and hard work on a demanding academic course.

The results include three points for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge Essay and the Christ’s Hospital pupils’ combined core points average of 2.1 placed them amongst the top International Bac-calaureate schools in the world.

The pupils’ university destina-tions include Imperial, King’s Col-lege, UCL, Bonn, Durham, Warwick, Heidelberg, Maastricht, Leeds, Exe-ter and the Free University of Berlin to read English, Engineering (Bio-

medical and Electronic), Classics, Medicine, Economics, Mathematics or Philosophy.

Head Master John Franklin said: “I am really proud of our pupils and teachers on a superb set of IB results. All of the pupils on the IB course gained their diploma with some impressively high scores. “The breadth and depth of the IB, along with its international focus and mathematical and scientifi c element makes this a demanding

course and our Year 13 IB leavers have a qualifi cation regarded as an outstanding preparation for study at university and beyond.”

The course, now in its third year at the school, runs alongside the A Level course. Pupils choose one subject from each of six groups, ensuring breadth of knowledge and understanding in their best lan-guage, an additional language, the social sciences, the experimental sciences, mathematics and the arts

Great treat for train fans

Miniature railway fans had a bonus at the Ingfi eld Manor School Fete, Five Oaks.

The Ingfi eld Light Railway had more rides than ever before. They had been building more track for many months, so that more people could enjoy a ride.

Paralympic gold medallist Dan Bentley opened the fete and en-tertainment included the Horsham Bluebelles and the Horsham Youth Concern Band.

Mr Don Newport, chairman of the Friends of Ingfi eld, said: “ We’ve taken around £11,500, which is a fantastic result. The takings over-all are a real credit to everyone who volunteered to help, and means we can do more to help the school and School for Parents”

Hazel Darby, the school’s prin-cipal, said; “We are so grateful for all the hard work by the small group of The Friends, and for everyone’s support on the day.”

PRINTERSJR Print has recently acquired the former Kool Kat site at The Old Granary, Bishopric on west side of town. We are continuing to trade from both sites until late summer when we fully relocate to The Old Granary site.

Over the next few months, JR Print will develop The Old Granary into the most comprehensively equipped printing centre in the area.

Designing good news for Horsham’s BishopricBusiness News Martin Read – News Reporter

Horsham’s Bishopric is buzzing with major developments and a further exciting expansion for lo-cal businesses is on the way!

JR Print has acquired the as-sets and site of the former Kool Kat Company – The Old Granary at 37 Bishopric, behind Shelley House - where they are extending the exist-ing print facility.

JR Print will continue to work from their premises at 19a Denne Parade until early September, when a major investment in equipment and people will create one integrat-ed printing solution for our district .when the two JR operations come together in the Bishopric.

But there is far more to JR than just printing – they pride them-selves in providing a comprehen-sive design, printing and copying service - fully utilising the latest digital techniques together with guillotining, folding, stapling, creasing, laminating and other fi n-ishing facilities. JR Print are an au-thorised Fed Ex Shipping Centre, too.

In the meantime, David Want runs the existing Bishopric ven-ture, telling the District Post: “We work closely with clients, focusing on quality to deliver their needs. Everything is done in house from posters, brochures and point of sale material for businesses through to wedding and funeral printing for

personal customers. “We’re a reliable, well estab-

lished company and will have much more space in the new set up and think combining our sites will be exciting news for Horsham busi-nesses!” David Meadham manages the Denne Parade enterprise, say-ing: “David and I have known each other for many years having fi rst worked together at Kodak.

“We’re adaptable, fl exible and with our modern, fast machinery are accustomed to working to short deadlines. We’ve outgrown Denne

Parade and are really looking for the business to take off when we’re all at the Bishopric come the end of summer.”

There is ample customer parking and friendly welcome guaranteed. JR count many local businesses and local councils among their valued clients and both David’s echoed: “Bring your needs to us and leave it to the two Dave’s and our enthusi-astic team – you’ll bless the day you did!

Female driver triumphant in the battle of the sexes driving challenge

Station Garage in Horsham host-ed an exciting battle of the sexes driving challenge, in order to fi nd out which gender possesses supe-rior driving skills in a light hearted competition.

Davey Pearson and Christine Doyle from The District Post went

head to head, outside TK Maxx in Horsham town centre, in order to perform a series of tricky driving manoeuvres and partake in a driv-ing themed quiz. From putting their parallel parking to the test, to an-swering tough theory questions, the challenge tested a wide range of the

pair’s driving skills and knowledge – whilst scoring the duo’s confi -dence, accuracy, alignment, aware-ness and speed. Whilst Christine scored higher on the practical driv-ing section, Davey trumped his fe-male competitior on the theory part of the challenge.

When Darren Webb, the owner of Horsham based company Living out the Dream, opens up the contact list on his phone it’s like reading through a list of who’s who from the sporting, music, fi lm and TV world.

However when the District Post called in to the company’s offi ce in Horsham the star names were not just on Darren’s phone as boxing legends Michael Watson and Robin Reid were making a personal visit, spending the afternoon chatting away and signing memorabilia.

Mancunian Darren is an avid col-lector of memorabilia himself and af-ter spending years in and around the Manchester sports and music scene he decided to put his extensive con-tacts to use and make a business out of it. He has a long association with Manchester United and can claim a number of players past and present as friends. In addition he has friends and contacts throughout the regions music scene such as Stone Roses bassist Mani and many more. Boxing is another passion of Darren’s, not everyone can get the likes of Michael Watson and Robin Reid along to their offi ce, but Darren also has connec-tions with M a r v i n Hagler

and Ricky Hatton to name just two.The company have a long list of af-

ter dinner speakers to suit any event and have an extensive authentic range of signed memorabilia ranging from Bon Jovi’s guitar to Lionel Messi’s boots to Manny Pacquiao’s signed boxing shorts. Living out the Dream also holds their own events where top stars will give inspirational speeches and carry out signings alongside a charity auction of top quality signed merchandise.

Living out the Dream gets its buzz-ing go ahead feel from the infectious enthusiasm of owner Darren Webb and his countless celebrity contacts. But the amazing thing about this company is that when you speak to its staff and see it operating you could be mistaken in thinking that it has been established for years. When asked how long the company had been going Darren replied “About three months, but we are doing alright aren’t we”.

After our short visit to this lively company we came away with the feel-ing that Darren and his team were do-ing more than just alright!

As temperatures soar, employers are being asked to take steps to re-duce the temperature in the work-place.

Health & Safety guidelines state that employers have a duty to ensure reasonable workplace temperature, but evidence shows that due to the unreliable British summer, too many employers fail to monitor workplace temperature closely enough.

Surprisingly, although the law sets out minimum temperatures for the workplace, there is no clear legal maximum.

Regulation 7 of the workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regu-lations 1992 provides that ‘ during working hours, the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings shall be reasonable’. In 2004, following requests for a maximum tempera-ture to be created, the government stated that it would not introduce a maximum workplace temperature, as it would be too impractical.

The World Health Organisation has stated that the maximum tem-

perature for ‘comfortable’ working (which, of course, is diff erent from the maximum temperature for ‘safe’ working) is 24 degrees Celsius.

Perhaps the best guidance is the call from the TUC, in 2003, for a maximum workplace temperature of 30 degrees (or 27 degrees for those doing strenuous work).

If temperatures in your workplace are approaching these levels, you need to think seriously about ways to manage risks such as fatigue, dizziness, dehydration and asthma. Failure to take reasonable steps (which would include introducing portable air conditioning machines, fans, providing free water or allow-ing longer breaks) might result in civil liability if an employee suff ers ill-health.

It should also be borne in mind that an employees age, build and medical factors, may aff ect an in-dividual’s tolerance of the heat/hu-midity and hence productivity.

On the other side of the coin, there are minimum temperatures for the workplace laid down under the Health & safety legislation. The temperature should be comfortable – at least 16 degrees Celsius where people are seated or don’t have to move much and at least 13 degrees Celsius where people are active.

Keeping your cool at work in the summerThis month, Janette Whitney gives advice on working in the heat

If the temperature must be lower, people should not be exposed for too long and wear suitable clothing, provided by the employer.

So if you wish to avoid a summer slump in your business productivity you need to take into account heat as a workplace risk.

Dare ye enter Witchwood at the Loxwood Joust?

The Loxwood Joust is a most spec-tacular mediaeval festival and new to the woodland area this year, is the haunted Witchwood.

Organisers dare you to set foot along the path of the witches trail, but warn of the witches that reside within.

Enter cautiously, the Witchwood in the Loxwood Meadow, to fi nd the Witches Hovel. Hang out around the cauldron, whist the witches make po-tions and cures from herbs, and be harassed, as they tell their witch-craft tales.

Known as 'creatures most foul', witches were the foulest creatures known to walk the world of the Middle Ages, dabblers in the dark arts, serv-ants of the spirits of this world and worshippers of pagan beliefs.

Find out whether Loxwood's witch-es are those known as 'white witches', 'wise women' or 'the cunning folk' that use their knowledge, of healing herbs and plants, to aid those they came into contact with, or are they 'black witches', who use their arts for more selfi sh desires, helping only themselves in the harming of their enemies?

Joined in the Witchwood by a witchy trader, and Mediaeval tarot card read-er, will you now believe that witches made secret pacts with the Devil, to allow them to haunt the skies on fl y-ing broomsticks, create storms and even transform into animals to keep watch over their woodland territories.

Two weekends of mediaeval may-hem take place on August 1, 2, 8 and 9 at The Loxwood Meadow, Loxwood, West Sussex RH14 0AL. For more in-formation, visit: www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk

The Annual Business Matters Awards organised by JPSouth Events recognises and showcases the very best of localbusiness in the Sussex and Hampshire area. For the youngachiever category you must be aged under 25. At 22 Jack certainlyqualified. Jack is no stranger to awards in his professional life asa garden designer having won a total of 8 RHS awards at Chelsea,Hampton Court and Malvern. Jack said 'The reason this is sosignificant for me to win this is because it represents myachievements in business and not garden design. I startedBirchfield Nursery in 2010 with my father and although likemany local businesses, we have had our ups and downs, butfortunately we have had steady growth to date. Of course it helpsbeing a recognised garden designer and having a knowledge ofplants, but I must admit, five years ago it all seemed a bitdaunting considering I was only 17.'

Susie Marshall of JP Events said ' The Judges were full of praisefor Jack. For such a young man to have so many responsibilitiesand have achieved so much, more than many people three timeshis age, makes him a deserving winner'.

One of the key features whendesigning a garden is the hardlandscaping whether it's aperimeter or retaining wall. Thereare many different finishes, buttwo commonly used are either afascia or a hand built stone.

Simple and effective hard landscaping

Jack Dunckley's award winning RHS Hampton Court garden of 2012 'The Italian Job' featured Beltrami Stoneskinpanels between the hornbeam hedge to great effect.

Contact Jack, Daniel and the qualified Landscaping Team by phone or email.01273 494058 or email: [email protected] or [email protected]

Other examples for screening can bethe clever use of timber. 'We recentlyhad a client who wanted to changethe boundary fence. But it belongedto the next door neighbour andcouldn't be altered. So I designed aclever timber slat screen that sits justin front of the original boundaryfence. Using a paint colour thatcomplimented the stone paving andall the other hard landscaping, resulted in the planting reallystanding out well.' said Daniel.'Another way of finishing retainingwalls around a patio area is to placesmall granite stones at the top of thelow brick wall. This is demonstratedwell on one of our projects that iscurrently being landscaped in WestChiltington. When designing thisgarden, I was able to reflect the flintlike areas of the house exterior walls.'

I recently designed a sizeablefrontage at a house in Guildford. Thelevel change was significant and Ifeatured their 'Oyster Stoneskin' onthe large retaining wall. Apart frombeing very effective, our landscapingteam found it easy to install using aflexible adhesive.' Beltrami alsoproduce a granite, limestone or slatefinish Stoneskin.

Garden Designers Jack Dunckley andDaniel Barber of Jack Dunckley ltd.incorporate Beltrami 'Stoneskin' inmany of their designs. Daniel says,'We use Beltrami because the qualityand range of products theymanufacture have a superb finish. The detail and naturalness of thestone adds that extra bit of detailand transforms an ordinary gardeninto an exceptional one.

Provide a striking display with upright flower spikes. Flowers end ofJuly through to September. Ideally planted in drifts in a border to giveheight and to extend the flowering season. A good long lasting cutflower to bring into the home.

At Jack Dunckley's LandscapeDesign, we have incorporatedAlbany Timber Craft in some of thegardens we have designed. For the2014 Hampton Court Flower Show,The Just Retirement Garden had abespoke 'walk through' Pavilion atone end. With about 30,000 peopleacross 7 days walking in and out ofthe building it had one entrance and2 exits, one on either side.

Custom Perspex windows providedfloor to ceiling vistas and allowedvisitors to look out onto the plantingthat surrounded the garden. Whendesigning a Show Garden thejudging criteria is really tough. Everydetail of not only the design, but theworkmanship is scrutinised. Apartfrom Albany's close proximity to usat the design studio, their expertisein Timber craft is second to none!

Increasing mortgage availability boosts prospects of new landlords

New landlords have more options open to them in the mortgage market, poten-tially making it easier to take the fi rst steps towards building a property port-folio.

The latest statistics from Moneyfacts show there are now 664 mortgage deals available to new landlords, up from 574 in April - a rise of 13 per cent. What’s more, it is some way above the 396 on off er in 2013.

Allison Thompson, lettings director at Leaders, says: “An expanding range of mortgages is great news for buy-to-let landlords, who now have a greater chance of securing the mortgage that is perfect for them.

“Finding the right mortgage on the right terms is one of the key steps to-wards achieving a healthy return on a buy-to-let project, along with identify-ing a suitable property in a good loca-tion.”

Recent changes to pension regulations making it possible to more easily with-draw a lump sum from a pension pot have so far been utilised by 60,000 pensioners, many of whom have done so in order to invest in a buy-to-let property.

Lenders have subsequently increased the number of mortgage products on of-

fer in order to meet the growing demands of this group.

Allison explains: “This year’s changes to the pension market have created an opportunity for a huge number of people to use their savings to invest in property. With the buy-to-let market renowned as a lucrative option in comparison with other types of investment, it is no sur-prise so many have opted to do so.

“Rents are high and mortgage rates are at an all-time low, so the potential for achieving a big return is higher than it has been for some time. What’s more, landlords are also likely to benefi t from substantial capital appreciation in the medium to long term.”

Anyone who is considering starting their own property portfolio should seek expert advice on where to invest and what type of property is likely to deliver the return they are looking for.

Each of Leaders’ 100-plus branches is staff ed by a team of experienced, lo-cal professionals who are ready to sup-port buy-to-let investors in identifying a suitable property and managing it suc-cessfully on their behalf to achieve the best results.

For more information, please contact your local branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

David Cox, Managing Director, Association of Residential Letting Agents, comments on the housing measures announced in the recent Chancellor’s Emergency Budget

What the Budget means for housing

In a bid to limit the growth in buy-to-let properties, the Chancellor has announced plans to reduce the amount of tax relief investors can claim on mortgage interest payments.

At a time when the supply of rental prop-erty is already struggling to meet demand, it is dangerous to try and reduce growth in the rental market.

The Chancellor has also replaced the wear and tear costs to a new system that means landlords can only deduct the exact amount that they will incur.

However, the unintended consequence of this, and the reduction in income tax is that landlords will seek to recoup their costs by hiking up rents.

As a result, tenants will have to save for longer to be able to aff ord a deposit for a house, as more of their income will be eat-en up by rent. This creates a vicious circle where tenants are renting for longer be-cause the hope of owning a home becomes less achievable.

The Government needs to think about the market more holistically and while the rental market remains such an important tenure, we need to fi nd the right balance between landlord taxation and tenant aspi-ration.

Tenants will have to save for longer to be able to aff ord a deposit for a house, as more of their income will be eaten by rent

Motor SportDave Smith – Sports Editor

Southwater driver Will Palmer has extended his lead in the Formula 4 Championship after taking a win and a second place at Snetterton last weekend.

Palmer now has amassed 260 Championship points, 25 ahead of Mexican driver Rodrigo Fonseca.

In Saturday’s hot sunshine Palmer started second on the grid behind Omar Ismail and despite having nu-merous attempts to catch Ismail Palmer finished second.

Starting from seventh in race two, Will suffered damage early on and re-joined at the back of the field; despite taking the fastest lap of the race he couldn't improve from 18th. Will lined up on the second row of the grid for

the third and final race of the weekend with the weather changing just before the start resulting in a heavy down-pour. Will made a lightning start that saw him take team mate Harri Newey and Omar Ismail on the first bend, a lead he held on to take the flag.

Will commented: "It was one of the best starts I have ever made. Com-ing from third, I just went straight through the middle and into the lead. Will Palmer

Hornets and YM start pre-seasonFootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

New-look Horsham travelled to Ry-man League newcomers Phoenix Sports last Saturday in the fi rst of their pre-season warm up games.

They have earned a draw against opposition that will be playing in the Ryman League North next season having won the Southern Counties East Football League back in April.

The Hornets were 2-0 and 3-1 down but fought back to snatch a draw through Joe Shelley’s last sec-ond equaliser. Horsham had Gareth Williams in goal after the club’s play-er of the season had agreed to sign on again for the forthcoming season in the Southern Combination Football League. William’s decision to stay is a massive boost to the Hornets and

he showed his quality against Pheo-nix Sports, keeping them in the game by making a penalty save when the score was at 3-1.

Horsham YMCA also started their pre-season campaign last Saturday. Peter Buckland’s side dominated throughout against Combined Coun-ties League side Dorking eventually fi nishing up with a crushing 7-0 vic-tory over the Surrey club.

The Hornets were 2-0 and 3-1 down but fought back to snatch a draw through Joe Shelley

Pulborough match tough Fittleworth point for point

BowlsJane Gray – Pulborough BC

Thursday saw the fi rst of just 3 games this week for Pulborough BC, away at Littlehampton's Nor-folk Club.

The sea breeze, brilliant sunshine and quality green, should have been the setting for a tight game, but with a much higher membership than Pulborough, Norfolk sent their A team to ensure victory in the Brookes Motors League fi xture, 44/30.

A local Derby against tough rivals Fittleworth, was always going to be hotly contested, but Skip, Mick Ralph, with lead, Steve Adsett and number 3 Fred Bushby, made their game seem like a walk in the park, only allowing their opponents to score on 6 out of 18 ends. Their con-sistent scoring earned them top rink for the day 17/8.

The other 2 Pulborough triples

didn't fare quite as well, but remark-ably, by 18 ends, the scores were level at 44/44, fi nishing up a friendly draw. The home fi xture back in May, was equally as close with Pulborough just steeling victory 48/45, showing just how evenly matched the two clubs have been this season!

A hotly anticipated home fi xture against Stedham on Sunday unfor-tunately fell victim to the weather, leaving the Pulborough players with a chance to catch up with the Wim-bledon Men's Final and a well earned break.

Pulborough's county singles play-er, Matt Ives, has made it into the Men's fi nal, to be played at Popes Mead, Crawley on August 2. He played Alec Martin from White Rock, Hastings on a green in Lewes and won convincingly 21/11. Everyone at Pulborough BC wish Matt all the best for his fi nal and send many congrat-ulations for his performance so far.

Storrington boast cup and league wins

BowlsJohn Wharmby – Storrington BC

The week saw two good victories for Storrington in both League and cup matches.

In the league match, against Crabland's B.C. there was very diff er-ent performances from team to team. The team of Geoff Page, Gerry New-man, Ian Younger and David Ogley found no diffi culty in their game, easily winning 39-6; but, this was counter-acted by Howard White's team fi nding their game a struggle, losing 8- 27.

The other two games were more evenly matched, with tension existing on both games right up to the last end. Peter Newman came up with "league standard" shots to win 19 - 16, while Paul Leatherbarrow got 3 shots on the last end - but, needed 4, hence losing

by one shot.David Ogley's powerful win ensured

that the match was won by Storringon, 88 - 72 shots with the league points divided Storrington 6, Crabland's 4.

Geoff Page, Gerry Newman, Ian Younger & David Ogley won 39-6.

Neil Tewsley, John Rimmer, Tony Gledhill & Peter Newman won 19-16.

Mike Obrien, R Naldrett, Harry Ken-dall & Paul Leatherbarrow lost 22-23.

Peter Smith, Les Wilson, Chris Wal-ter & Howard White lost 8-27.

Storrington 88 - 72 Crabland's, Points 6-4.

In the Midhurst Cup Storrington faced Graff ham B.C. (just South of Petworth) in a game that consisted of 2 triples rinks playing away and 2 tri-ples rinks at home.

At home, Harry Kendall's team had no diffi culty in showing their supe-

riority, winning 20 - 6 while Howard White's team also won, but not with-out some apprehension, as they fi -nally fi nished 16 - 14. This gave a fi nal "half- match - score" of 36 - 20.

Away, at Graff ham, the Storrington teams, skippered by Pam Healy and Peter Newman, also won, but not too easily, the fi nal "half- match - score" being 43 - 32.

The overall fi nal match result was Storrington 79 – 52 Graff ham.

Midhurst cup home teams:Ann Page, Geoff Page & Harry Ken-

dall won 20-6Pauline Bain, David Bain & Howard

Ali Harmer Head Coach of Acro said, “Many of the gymnasts had only 8 weeks to prepare after com-peting in the British Finals ear-lier this year. This meant they had moved up to higher grades with some having new partners, learn-ing new and harder moves and new routines, thus making their achievement even more amazing. I am very proud of them all, hard work does pay off and they are all a credit to the club, their parents and their coaches”.

Horsham Festival starts on Sunday

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham have two excellent fi x-tures for the annual festival at Cricket Field Road.

In the four day LV= County Cham-pionship game, starting on Sunday, Sussex entertain Nottinghamshire and on the following Sunday in the 50 over Royal London Cup, Lanca-shire visit.

Festival organiser Barry Peay told the District Post: “We’re ab-solutely delighted to have two such outstanding fi xtures. Last year’s Festival was a great success, the excellent wickets rightly earning our groundsman Jim Askew a much coveted ECB award”. Horsham President Hugh Thomas says: “2014 was one of the very best festivals with consistently high attendanc-es, very pleasingly returning to the profi t level of fi ve years ago.” Like Sussex, Nottinghamshire are in the lower half of the Division One table, but both having ample opportunity to improve their position. Sussex have a good record at Horsham, yet at last year’s Festival Notts - whose

strong line up includes England’s Hales, Lumb, Patel, James Taylor and arguably the best wicket keeper in the country, Chris Read - beat them in the one-day cup. Former England Coach Peter Moores, is now a consultant with Notts. Under him Sussex won the second division of the Championship in 2001, and the main competition itself in 2003, the fi rst Championship title in their 164-year history.

Last year Lancashire were rel-egated to Division 2 in the champi-onship but currently head that table and are a strong one day side, get-ting through to the 2014 T20 fi nal. They last appeared at Horsham in 1994, Sussex winning the four day game although Michael Atherton’s unbeaten century saw Lancs win the one-dayer.

Sussex’s T20 match at Hove two days before the start of the Hor-sham Festival creates a logistical challenge - a rapid late transfer of boundary boards, chairs and other equipment to Cricketfi eld Road. And, having county cricket at the club on two consecutive week-ends entails the re-arrangement of

Horsham team fi xtures elsewhere. Strolling round the ground at the Festival with everything running smoothly, spectators could be for-given for thinking that little or-ganisation is necessary, but much eff ort is involved. Is it all worth it? Horsham’s Chris Wassell confi rms: “Defi nitely! It raises our profi le and ensures that the club continues to maintain our excellent facilities.” Barry Peay adds: “We do it because we love it – it’s the highest level of professional sport locally and we like welcoming people to the best ground in England! Its hard work – having a gallows sense of humour is a great advantage!”

Sussex Chairman Jim May sums up: “We have exciting fi xtures and Sussex are one of few counties hosting out-ground cricket. It re-mains vital that local residents and businesses support the Festival to ensure that we are able to continue playing at Horsham.” At 10am on Tuesday there will be a member’s forum – a Q & A session with Sus-sex Chairman Jim May, CEO Zac Toumazi and Club Coach Mark Rob-inson.

Roff ey through to last eight in National CupSunday July 12 England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship Roff ey 242-7 (44 overs) Havant 209 All Out (40.5 overs)Roff ey won by 33 runs

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

In a fl uctuating hard fought battle – a great advert for cricket - Rof-fey clinched victory qualifying for the National quarter fi nals with the highest score of the round.

Gloomy conditions delayed the start, marginally reducing the overs and Havant were happiest after putting Roff ey in and curtailing them to 65-4. But Matt Davies (46) and Rohit Jagota (42) took the score to 150-5 before 3 sixes in Chris Webb’s enterpris-ing 35 not out enabled Roff ey to fi nish on 242, boosted by 38 extras including 22 wides. Havant started slowly and when Leigh Harrison (2-35) and George Fleming (2-21) took early wickets and Rohit’s prostrate throw engineered a run out, recovery from 39-5 ap-peared unlikely.

But, Havant, second in Hampshire’s top fl ight, had other ideas and a cluster of mid innings sixes put them back in the game, until, aided by excellent catching - Mike Norris pouching fi ve – Roff ey regained control. With the run rate mounting Alex Collins bowled commend-ably fast and straight from the top end, taking 3-41 and Rohit chipped in with a clinical boot level caught and bowled to see Roff ey home – his unbeaten 149 was instrumental in eliminating Havant last year.

Roff ey skipper Josh Fleming said: “This was a really enjoy-able tense game - we knew they batted all the way down. The out-

fi eld was greasy and rock hard and getting our key fi elders in the right places helped a lot!”

In miserable weather this was a golden day at Roff ey - they are re-warded with a home Quarter Final against the winners of next Sun-day’s tie - Bath (third in the West of England Premier League) versus S u n - bury (top of the Surrey

Championship) on Sunday August 9.

Hustling Horsham humble Eastbourne

Saturday July 11- Sussex Premier LeagueHorsham v EastbourneEastbourne 77 All Out (26.3 overs) Horsham 81-2 (13.5)Horsham won by 8 wickets

Horsham murdered Eastbourne in a one-sided encounter, the game fi nishing at 3.25pm long before the scheduled tea interval.

Depleted Eastbourne elected to bat and reached 33-1 with no hint of impending disaster - before four wickets fell for fi ve runs. Worse fol-lowed as, on a typically reliable Hor-sham wicket, Kevin Stoute took 3-16 and, at his most tormenting, Mi-chael Munday 4-8.

Amid a fl urry of poor shot selec-tion eight batsmen mustered just 23 between them, George Garton, who also completed an excellent run out off his own bowling, and Na-than Roberts sharing the remaining

spoils. With the target defi cient by well

over 100 and 83 overs available, Ben Shoare hit 4 fours and 2 sixes in his fl uent 48 not out. Horsham suff ered just two reverses, winning at a run a ball.

Will Beer free from county duty garnered a slip catch but Horsham had the luxury of not needing him to bowl or bat. Eastbourne fl irt with relegation, Ben Shoare telling us: “They’re clearly struggling at the moment but we bowled well and can only play the team put in front of us. During the week I’ve been working hard with Kevin Stoute on our game and was pleased to get some runs.”

Horsham (197 points) remain fi fth – and tomorrow (Saturday July 18) travel to Bexhill, fourth on 198, hav-ing played a game less. In a season of topsy turvey results Bexhill are the surprise package with fi ve wins and, last week, a bizarre tie when, after dismissing Brighton & Hove for 104 they were all out themselves for the same score, having been 35-7 and then 79-9.

Roff ey worry cautious and timid NomadsSaturday July 11 - Sussex Premier LeaguePreston Nomads v Roff ey Roff ey 214-8 (58 overs) Preston Nomads 144-5 (52 overs) Match Drawn

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Despite a moderate target Pres-ton Nomads made no eff ort to win, the game ending in turgid stalemate.

Roff ey, inserted, soon found themselves 32-4, Carl Simon striking three times. But, after Abdul Khan (24) and Ben Manenti (57) were both run out, Dan Smith with 41 and George Fleming 31 not out enabled Roff ey to close on 214. Then George (4-37) and Ben re-duced Nomads to 61-5.

With virtually half the innings still available many sides would have sought to regroup, staying in touch with the asking rate with the intention of going for the runs if wickets subsequently remained intact, but Nomads shut up shop. Stuart Faith, 41 and Kashim Ibra-him 44 fi nished unbeaten after batting for almost 30 overs to-gether, Nomad’s pedestrian 144 coming from 52 overs.

Nomads have won the Premier League six times in the last eight years but this was hardly the stuff of dynamic champions. At Wimbledon or Ascot stern action is taken when competitors are deemed not to have tried to win.

Playing recklessly and gift-ing the game to Roff ey was not on, but, nervous after Roff ey beat them at Fulking last year to clinch the title, Nomads justifi cation was that - ignoring second placed East Grinstead - they see Roff ey as their main threat. They de-termined not to allow Roff ey the slightest whiff of extra points.

Roff ey skipper Josh Fleming said: “The wicket was dead and when the ball got soft there was little we could do if they were de-termined to block it.” After beat-ing the Sussex Development XI on Sunday Nomads are top with 255 points. Roff ey third, on 231, two points behind East Grinstead, have a game in hand.

Tomorrow (Saturday July 18) Roff ey return home to host early season leaders Brighton & Hove – now 7th after winning just one of their last seven games.

Billingshurst tantalisingly close to a major upsetSaturday July 11 - Sussex Premier LeagueBillingshurst v East GrinsteadBillingshurst 249-8 (58 overs) East Grinstead 234-9 (52 overs)Match drawn

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

After Bill-ingshurst’s b a t t i n g m a i n -tained its recent up-surge they confirmed that they are a genu-ine Premier League team, coming within an ace of over-turning strong second in the table East Grinstead.

Inserted, Billingshurst set a promising platform, posting a de-manding 250 target with 66 from Stuart Barber, 50 from Andy Barr and useful contributions from Tom Nightingale (40) and Rob Wood-man, 34, Bradley Hatchett taking 4-66.

East Grinstead responded posi-tively with a 112 run opening part-nership, their captain, former Sus-sex player Will Adkin leading the

way with 65. But then Hurst skip-per Ben Williams and Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi, bowling 40 overs in tandem, did what they have been doing all season.

Continuing their excellent form with the ball, Ben

removed the fi rst three batsmen

before Dan-ny scythed

t h r o u g h the mid-dle and lower or-der with 5 - 5 1 . 1 3 1 - 2 subsided to 185-7 before

a late run out left East

G r i n s t e a d hovering over

the precipice on 234-9 but they

managed to block out the remaining balls, Hurst

Chairman Jim Burroughs saying: “Our fi rst draw! We’ve got an ex-cellent home record and this was so frustrating – we almost pulled it off but just ran out of overs.”

Tomorrow (Saturday July 18) Billingshurst travel to relegation threatened Eastbourne.

Billingshurst crowd enjoys Luke Wright’s benefi t

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

County stars turned out in force to support Luke Wright’s benefi t at Billingshurst Cricket Club.

Luke and Hurst captain Ben Wil-liams coached enthusiastic colts and after the T20 match and the pavilion rocked to lively music.

Luke Wells scored an unbeaten 45, Craig Cachopa 38, Sussex racking up 222, Dave Dunn taking 4-33. Stuart Barber and Mike Burroughs got thir-ties and Rob Woodman 44 as Hurst fell just short. Universally popular 29 year old Luke said: “I have chosen

three excellent charities – The Broad Appeal (Motor Neurone), Make a Wish Foundation and Sussex’s own charity - Sussex Cricket in the Com-munity Trust and I’m working fl at out to raise as much money as pos-sible! It’s great to see so many peo-ple here.

The lads had a great time here last year for Mike Yardy’s benefi t, so it’s nice to get the game going despite the weather and have a fun day. Bill-ingshurst is a great club and it’s re-ally good to see them doing well in the premier league this year. This is becoming a bit of a fi xture for every season, hopefully.”
