You have here a little package of Christmas-ness. Two soundtracks in one box. Two very different episodes. The first is music from The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe which aired in December 2011. I remember going to watch the preview of this at BBC Television Centre (W12 8QT RIP) and the audience was full of Members of Parliament. Actual proper MPs. Apparently their lives are so monitored and regulated nowadays there are hardly any perks or benefits left to them other than getting to see Doctor Who early. And they came in droves. And they wept. Actual MPs crying wet tears. And from both sides of the house. Not surprising though. Nothing like the fighting spirit of Madge Arwell, her grace under fire, her unwillingness to let her emotions show through, to make a few hard-nosed British politicians turn all blubbery. Much of the sad music was based around Madge’s theme that I took fifty takes to get right on the piano while everyone went to have their lunch.

The next is 2012’s The Snowmen. This was not recorded with the incomparable National Orchestra of Wales, for all sorts of complicated logistical reasons (not 100% sure what a logistical reason is, but still). We did it at Air Studios with a small band

and then sort of electronically inflated it with things I have on my computer when I was in a hotel room on Vancouver Island (they have their own island). The episode introduced the lovely Clara Oswald. Or did it. Or didn’t it. I don’t know. Steven Moffat, please help me. Her theme was actually first heard in Series 7’s Asylum of the Daleks. But only because the same character first appeared in that episode. Or did it etc. And also, Withnail!! Yes, we had Withnail in Doctor Who. Never mind. Ask your dad. Or your more culturally aware friend. You should probably know who Withnail is.

As always, Ben Foster worked his musical miracles and Jake Jackson twiddled knobs like no other. Dave Foster printed the music and did so much more and Gerry O’Riordan recorded the orchestra with a laptop that didn’t break (thanks computer brand named after a fruit).
