The National Treasure The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu Illustrated Handscroll in the collection of Gotoh Museum, Tokyo, will be on special exhibit and this exhibition will unravel the charm of Japan’s world-famous Tale of Genji by tracing the cultural history pertaining to the tale. <Chapter "Kiritsubo" from the Tale of Genji> Edo period, 1655 Private Collection Special Exhibits at the Masterpieces Collection Room 5 November 8 - December 13, 2020 <Folding Screen, bamboo design> By Kanō Tsunenobu Edo period, 17th-18th c. The Tokugawa Art Museum The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu Illustrated Handscroll (designated a National Treasure) is a pictorial version of the lady's diary, in which she records the lives and events of the imperial court, including the birth of Prince Atsuhira (enthroned as Emperor Goichijō) and Prince Atsunaga (enthroned as Emperor Gosuzaku). A veritable treasure trove on life at the Heian court, the handscroll is a masterpiece of yamato-e style painting fully equal to the handscroll depicting The Tale of Genji. Thematic Exhibition Bamboo: The Essence of Japanese Aesthetics Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library Bamboo is one of the most familiar plants for Japanese people. This exhibition will explore Japan’s distinctive aesthetic sensibilities that grew out of the use of bamboo to produce various bamboo-related art and craft works. This exhibition displays the brilliantly colored paintings of family treasures, flora, fauna and daily life as described in these books and introduces the world of the Owari domain during the Edo period. <The scene of Tsushima Shrine Festival from Chōshu zasshi> Edo period, 18th c. The Tale of Genji written by Murasaki Shikibu is a masterpiece of classic literature that has been read continuously over the course of a thousand years. Tea Scoop, named Namida ("Tears")

It is said that Sen-no-Rikyū (1522-1591), in his last days, carved this bamboo tea scoop and used it in his last tea gathering, after Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) ordered punishment upon him. March 28, the day of Rikyū's death, is remembered as a memorial day called "Rikyū-ki." The scoop was later owned by Furuta Oribe who made the outer case for the scoop, then by Tokugawa Ieyasu and by the 1st Owari Lord Tokugawa Yoshinao.

Spring Special ExhibitionFrom Ieyasu to Yoshinao: The Birth of the Owari DomainExhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library and Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art MuseumTokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the final national unifier, and his son Yoshinao (1600-1650), who was assigned to govern the Owari domain during the time of peace, lived contrasting lives. Focusing on the ruling policies that were passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, this exhibition traces the path of their lives, as well as Yoshinao's feelings toward Ieyasu through their personal effects and historical materials.

Special ExhibitionToshio Tabuchi: “Depicting Time Eternal”Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum

Japanese-style painter, Toshio Tabuchi (1941-) is an emeritus professor of Tokyo University of the Arts and chairman of the board of directors of the Nihon Bijutsuin. He continues to create art that strikes a balance between two of the virtues of Japanese painting: decorativeness and spirituality. This exhibition looks back at his painting career and presents masterpieces of his own recommendation, including new works.

The splendid Buddhist scriptures, Buddha statues, Buddhist paintings held in the Owari Tokugawa family were the foundation of faith. Personally treasured articles of the deceased were often dedicated to temples for the repose of the souls of the departed. With these, this exhibition tries to unravel the complex feelings around Buddhism held by the various members of the daimyo family.
