Leadership Position 2020 Our Year 4 and 5 children have been involved in speeches and elections for 2020. The Year 5 students have done an amazing job preparing their detailed speeches and the children voting have been quite discerning. I believe the roles have been well selected and I look forward to another positive year for Dorset PS. Congratulations to the following successful applicants. Getting to know you interviews

Our Foundation 2020 team are currently running the getting to know you interviews with our incoming families. These interviews are invaluable and lots of information sharing takes place. Our 2020 Foundation children and families are already becoming a solid part of our Dorset community and lots of positive feedback has been received by our new parents on how welcoming the feel is at the school. A big thankyou to Laura Rawlins and her team for such a successful introduction to school life at Dorset PS!

2020 I am now in the process of finalising grade structures for 2020. If you are not intending for your child to return to Dorset next year can you please contact the office via the Dorset PS email address. Absences

Just a reminder that absences must be accompanied with a notification (Flexibuzz, note, phone call) by the parent/carer. Certain absences may require a doctor’s certificate if the absences are to be lengthy in duration. If you are concerned re absences please see your classroom teacher.

Child Safety All Victorian Schools are required to comply with the Child Safe Standards. These are designed to ensure that organisations that work with children take steps to create a culture of child safety and protect children from all forms of abuse. The Reportable Conduct Scheme seeks to improve organisations’ responses to allegations of child abuse and neglect by their workers and volunteers. The scheme is established by the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005. It has been designed to ensure that the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP) will be aware of every allegation of certain types of employee misconduct involving children in relevant organisations. A new statutory duty of care has been created to ensure there is a clear legal duty placed on organisations to take reasonable steps to minimise the risk of child abuse perpetuated by organisational representatives. Dorset PS is committed to ensuring the safety of every child at the school and policies have been developed to ensure this occurs. If you have any queries about the child safety standards and procedures please contact me for a time to discuss your concerns. Policies will be re disturbed so parents /carers are aware of all policies and procedures. I suggest that parents refer to the Child Safety policy attached or refer to the following listed policies that have been distributed via Flexibuzz if you have concerns/queries. CHAPLAINS CHAT WITH DAVE How To Make Your Kids Amazing: 4 Secrets From Research – Part 6 of 7 In this seven week series, we ask the question “How do you raise amazing kids?” and explore four topics: Balance, Resilience, Insight and Empathy. Empathy It’s okay. You can admit it. You’ve had that thought. Every parent has. You look at your child’s behaviour and say to yourself: “This child is a self-absorbed sociopath.” They demand everyone’s attention regardless of what is going on. They cause another person pain and then promptly laugh at them. It’s okay. The vast majority of the time this is a mere developmental phase. Most kids are inhumanly selfish when they are tiny but slowly their empathy muscles grow. That said, bullies do come from somewhere, so let’s see if we can speed this up a bit. In the future I want your kid to grow up and take first prize in the science fair, not take my car. Again, behaviour is communication and discipline is teaching. If they’re being selfish we gotta help them with empathy and social skills, not be cruel to them to teach them not to be cruel to people. So deliberately draw children’s attention to other people’s experiences and their feelings. Obviously you want to do this when the kid has harmed someone else, but you also want to do it preventatively. With a young child, storytime can include questions like, “What is the Lorax feeling right now?” And that is the goal – feeling. You don’t want kids to just understand how other people feel. That’s called "cognitive empathy" and it doesn’t reform sociopaths, it makes them more effective sociopaths. You want your children to have "compassionate empathy." To see others feeling pain and to have the desire to help. This is another reason why bubble-wrapping children is dangerous. If kids don’t experience the range of negative emotions it can make it hard for them to relate. Another fun exercise is to let children help pick the gifts your family buys for others. It’s a natural way to remind them that other people are different and to consider what will make other people happy. From the “Barking up the Wrong Tree” blog.

BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast Club is on in the staffroom every morning before school. Students from all year levels love to attend and have some toast and a milo before they go to class. With the increasing number of students attending we are in need of some more supplies. Spread and margarine donations are always more than appreciated! Woolworths, Coles and no name brands are perfect. The children also love their milo in the morning. If you would like to make a donation please hand it in to the office. Dorset Primary School would also like to say a big thank you to Coles Croydon, Aldi Croydon and Bakers Delight Croydon for their ongoing donations. We really appreciate their support as it allows us to continue to provide our students with breakfast before school.

REAL SCHOOLS As we approach the last weeks of our school year, many students will be feeling quite anxious about what 2020 has in store for them. Our Year 6 students will be leaving a learning environment that they have felt secure and happy in, heading towards the next phase in their schooling. Our staff have ensured that all students are a valued member of our school community. Teachers have established strong relationships with both our students and families and this is paramount to our student wellbeing. SAKG - KITCHEN Hello again from the kitchen – Next Wednesday is our 2019 Italian Day. In the kitchen with our Grade 3-6 students, we will be making Italian Zeppole Doughnuts. I will be carrying out preparation for Wednesday’s classes the day before. If any parents are available to assist on Tuesday, it will be greatly appreciated. I will also need assistance from our parent/grandparent community in the kitchen on Wednesday with cooking the doughnuts and supervising students in small groups. SPECIALIST CORNER - ART Hello Dorset Primary School community. The Year 5/6s have been learning

about famous Art, discussing what styles they like and what they like about

them. They have been using precise measurements to draw a cube that, with

lines and shading, looks 3D. All of these cubes have been displayed in a

colourful rainbow on the board near the Library. The Year 3/4s have enjoyed

creating abstract paintings with paper relief sculpture and some of them are

on display near the staffroom. They have also been exploring the stippling

brush technique and they used this to create spring paintings. All of the

students have created beautiful Art this term and their efforts brighten the

schools hallways.
