A new semester, and with it comes every graduate’s favorite email at-tachment, the publication. Meet The New Faces of CabinetBrothers,

My name is Franklin Peitz and I have recently taken over as President of FIJI. I am a junior finance and ac-counting double major and hail from Perry, IA. Previously, I served as Rush Co-Chairman and worked on estab-lishing the Persistent Leader Scholar-ship. I have also been involved on campus in the last three years serving as an orientation leader and PMAC. In addition, I am extremely excited that I will be spending this summer in the Quad Cities interning at John Deere.

I am really looking forward to this next year and serving as President. Over winter break, our house wel-comed a $100,000 bathroom reno-vation, which all brothers are thank-

ful for. The cabinet and I have many smaller house improvement ideas that we look forward to implementing to make the house nicer for when you all come back to visit. Brothers, For those of you who don’t know

me, I’m Adam Dolan and will be the delta iota treasurer for the 2010 calendar year.

You may remember me from last year’s cabinet where I was the cor-responding secretary, and I hope to continue the upward trend of our chapter.

Financially our chapter has been

doing very well these past couple of years, and this is something that I am planning on continuing and expanding.

I hope to be able to use some of the money that we have saved over the past couple of years, and invest back into the house. I hope all is well and we look forward to seeing ev-eryone over relays.

We have lost contact with some of our graduate brothers. If you know of someone not receiving a copy of The Drake FIJI, or any correspondence from the house please email our Graduate Relations Chair: Ted Brewer

TREASURER: ADAM DOLAN

RECORDING SECRETARY: GREGORY LARSON

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: JEFF KWIATEKBrothers,

My name is Jeff Kwiatek and I am the corresponding secretary for this term. If you didn’t already know me from the publications or meeting me my apologies, I’ve been trying to meet as many graduates as I can.

But back to me. I am a sophomore creative advertising major with a mi-nor in politics. I have also held the position of publications and Internet committee head in the past. I was also one of Drake’s Top First Year students last year along with the re-cording secretary Greg Larson. I had a pretty awful internship last summer

and this summer I’m hoping to have something more substantive.

Right now I’m working on bring-ing more technology into the chapter and using it to help us get more orga-nized. I’m also trying to work on more communication with the Graduates. We communicate a lot with IHQ and the University but there is a ton of untapped potential as far as gradu-ate support goes. We’re always wel-come to have guys come back and enjoy the house and I’m open to any communication that you would like to receive.

I am also currently working on the annual awards report for the chap-ter and hope to bring back even more honors than we received last year. We have had a ton of great stuff going on in the chapter over the past year and hope you all see the work that the brothers, BCA and house Corp are putting in. Hope this was a helpful update and I hope to see many of you come back for pig dinner.

Fraternally,Jeff Kwiatek

Brothers,Coming at you weighing a pow-

erful 160 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes is the Big Slam Phigam!

But seriously, my name is Greg Larson and I’m a sophomore and this year’s new Recording Secretary for the Delta Iota chapter. On campus I serve as a Senator-at-Large, Bands Co-chair for the Student Activities Board and the just recently was elected to serve as the Vice Presi-dent of Activities at Drake for next year.

I am greatly humbled and excited to serve as the Recording Secretary

for the chapter this year and look forward to implementing some of my goals. I have installed a message board in the house to enhance com-munication amongst brothers about the happenings of the house and on campus. I am going to be reading a little bit from our bylaws each week at our meetings to educate each brother on the rules that govern our chapter. Also, I have incorporated a chapter-wide texting system that al-lows for me to send out a message quickly to every brother’s cell phone alerting him of a brief message or alert. I also am working on getting

new mailboxes installed in the house for better sorting and organization of letters, magazines and packages. One last goal is to improve atten-dance at meetings by incorporating a theme that will allow for a small reward, thus enticing brothers to come and share in the fun.

HISTORIAN: VICTOR CEDENO

I will continue to compile the chapter’s history and update our picture book. The history does not consist of only things that we do as undergraduates. If you have any FIJI memories since you graduated let me know and I will add it to our history.

I am looking forward to work with the new Cabinet and Commit-tee Heads. There are a lot of great things going on at Delta Iota and I encourage you all to stay tuned, you will not be disappointed.

Sincerely, Victor Cedeno

Brothers, My name is Victor Cedeño and

I am the new Historian. I am a junior and a member of the Alpha Epsilon class. My majors are Political Sci-ence and Psychology with minors in philosophy and economics. I plan on attending law school and studying public policy. I’ve just started looking for law schools so if anyone has any suggestions let me know!

I was born in the Dominican Re-public and moved to Iowa when I was 12, many of you can probably hear my accent as you read this and I will not apologize for that. I am a mem-ber of the alpha epsilon class and this is my third year as a proud FIJI!

Before being the Historian I served Delta Iota as the Graduate Relations Chair and before that as the Publications Chair. I am very pas-sionate about the house and about my new position and I hope to contin-ue the great work done by Historians before me.

ΔΙ AND ΑΙ BALL RUNIowa State and Drake FIJI chap-

ters teamed up together in the Fall of 2009 to do a charity run for the American Red Cross. Coordinating with the Des Moines police depart-ment (for an escort), Drake Athletics, and Iowa State University, our two chapters proceeded to run a mara-thon pace from Iowa State to Drake as a fundraiser, culminating in a pre-sentation of the checks with the mon-ey raised at the Drake v. Iowa State basketball game. After raising near-ly $4000 between the two chapters in its first year, this looks as though it will be a successful tradition worth continuing for years to come.

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT

Over the past year more than 25 members of the Delta Iota chapter have volunteered at IPTV’s annual telethons. The telethons were held December 4th 2009 and March 7th 2010. The event back in December was an all Phi Gam ordeal; even the anchor was a graduate brother from the Arizona Chapter.

The IPTV representatives are al-ways happy to have us and it is al-ways one of the most enjoyable ser-vice events of the year. Since last year we have helped raise over $50,000 for IPTV and hope to raise more in the ensuing years. Look for us the next time you’re watching IPTV!

of laundry less for all members living in the house, something worked out at the most recent House Corporation meeting. We will also be installing proper wireless Internet coverage for the entire house.

Our next large-scale project will be happening in 1-3 years. HC will be undertaking a significant re-model of the first floor of the chap-

ter; expanding the footprint, updat-ing the kitchen and remodeling the front porch. This is the second huge project we will be undertaking and something that will be completed due to efforts of Graduates and under-graduates. Long-term plans would then include a remodel of the 2nd and 3rd floor rooms and hallways.

All of our efforts are working to-wards bettering the house to make it a more desirable residence for the undergraduate members and a great place for graduates to come back and visit. If anyone is interest-ed in contributing to these projects (whether financial or other) please feel free to contact me. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Brothers,The Delta Iota House Corporation

has been working diligently to bring great improvements to the chapter house during the past few years. Adding to the renovation of the front room we are currently engag-ing in two large scale and multiple smaller projects. Over winter break we completed a $125,000 renova-tion of the 2nd & 3rd floor public re-strooms. We updated the plumbing, fixtures and showers. It was pretty much a complete makeover and we are very pleased with the results. The bathrooms look great and have been very well received by the cur-rent guys living in.

On top of that, within the next 12 months, HC is updating the laundry facilities, eliminating the 3rd party vendor and upgrading the equip-ment. This will also make the price

Chapter House UpdateHOUSE CORP REPORT

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S NEW BATHROOMS!

Great news! With the help of house corps. We have redone our bathrooms. No longer dirty enough to scare the shell off of a cockroach each tile and toilet seat are squeaky clean. Everyone in the house is ex-tremely excited about the second and third floor bathrooms. Complete-ly new sinks, shower heads, toilets you name it. It has become a great rush tool and we hope you can soon see them. We are keeping them in pristine condition and there is a hotly contested battle for the bathrooms during room picks.

SCHEDULEThe 2009 Frank Norris Pig Dinner was an

incredible success. I hope everyone enjoyed the dinner as well as the program; it appears everything was received well. A few numbers from Pig Dinner: we had a total of 129 people served, 56 graduates, 2 undergraduates from the University of Iowa, and our chapter advisor Lou Ann Simpson attended. These numbers are about the same as the 2008 Pig Dinner. After all the cost were considered we raised about $1500.

Our Keynote Speaker was Archon Vice Pres-ident, James Hickey, Jr. He was a vibrant speak-er who delighted everyone who was present. We were very honored by his presence at our Pig Dinner. Other speakers were Justin Stubstad, who delivered the exile’s toast and our Purple Legionnaire Drew Engrebecht and former Presi-dent Tim Sullivan who updated everyone on cur-rent House Corp and BCA initiatives.

I want to thank everyone who helped put together the event. Kyle Stolarz was especially helpful as the previous graduate relations chair. I had help from many undergraduate brothers with time-consuming tasks such as creating invi-tations. Thank you to all the graduate brothers who took it upon themselves to call other gradu-ate brothers to inform them of the event. A spe-cial thanks to those graduate brothers who were unable to attend but donated back to the house regardless!

THANK YOU

Haven’t been back for a few years? There’s no time like this year’s Drake Relays to come back and visit. Check out the new bathrooms, hang out with current undergrads and remember it’s never too late to start coming back.

Victor,

I just wanted to say thanks for inviting me to speak at your Pig Dinner and for all the hospitality the brothers showed me. I had a great time and am really glad I got to know you and so many of the other Delta Iota Fijis.

I thought you ran an excellent event. The turnout was great, the meal wonderful and the program went smoothly. Well done.

Please pass my thanks onto Kyle, Joe and the rest of the group. I'm just a few hours north in Min-neapolis so if I can ever be of help to the chapter, just let me know.

WORDS FROM JIM HICKEY

Congratulations to our Chapter AdvisorsBoth our faculty advisor Lou Ann Simpson and Purple Legionnaire Drew Engebrecht received great honors this past year. We wanted to take a few moments to point those accomplishments out. Please feel free to congratulate either of them if you happen to bump into one another.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Drew Engebrecht was named as one of Des Moines Business Record’s 40 under 40. The article written about him high-lights a fact the most people in our chap-ter already knew, Drew cares about what he does. “While it is very exciting for Drew, it is also a testament to FIJI and the type of leaders the Delta Iota chapter can produce,” Chris Diebel wrote to me.

Last year I had the pleasure of be-ing frightened by Drew when I was a pledge. . It was only second semester, at a BCA meeting, that I realized the extent to which Drew helps the house. Drew has helped immensely in relations with the university and his support of the house.

Read the article about Drew here.

Drew EngebrechtLou Ann Simpson

We would like to take a moment out and congratulate our faculty advisor Lou Ann Simpson on her appointment to the post of University Marshall. This is excit-ing for Lou Ann and the house. As Uni-versity Marshall she will preside over all official ceremonies for the University. This means at graduation every FIJI for the next five years will be crossing the stage and shaking hands with Lou Ann at graduation. Phi Gamma Delta was also mentioned in the article written about her on the University website, which can only help our clout. We are honored to have such a well-recognized member of the faculty as our advisor and wish her the best with her new post.

NEW ACTIVE BROFILESA glimpse into the lives of a few new brothers from our most recent pledge class.

About Me: Hi my name is Tad Unruh and I grew up in the bustling Kan-sas metropolis of Olathe, which is 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City. I am an Electronic Media Major and hope to pursue a career in television production. Soccer and Basketball are my hobbies. I am also a rabid KU fan and look down

upon any Missouri Tiger. I enjoy attending Drake and am sure to graduate in four years and have a hell of a time while do-ing it. Favorite FIJI memory: My Favorite FIJI memory was actually the night before bid day on the final day of rush. Three friends and I were torn between joining Phi Gamma Delta and also another fra-ternity on campus. All four of us decided to do a secret ballot in order to find out what fraternity we would like to join. One by one we signed our own piece of pa-per with our fraternity of choice and put it face down on the table across the room. One of us went over and picked up the papers and in a steady voice as his face began to crack a smile. “Looks like we’re all going FIJI!!”.

What I have gained from my FIJI experi-ence: To be completely honest I don’t want to be stereotypical in this column. But I have found friends for life in FIJI. This past pledge semester has been one of the best I’ve ever had. I look forward to growing old with this house and being able to come back once I’ve graduated.

My plans for the future: My plans for the future could be anything in the journal-ism field. I plan on being able to be a producer of Broadcasting for sporting events, probably for ESPN. Travelling across the United States to cover sporting events would be my dream job. Another option is that I would like to work for a news station and do reporting or editing for them.

Tad Unruh

About Me: My name is Dan Jessen and I am an open Business major that was raised in the superb little city of Chanhas-sen, Minnesota. I enjoy playing sports, watching movies and just hanging around. My iPod is filled with an eclectic mix of music from the past 30 years but I am cur-

rently listening to an array of ambient/post-rock bands that no one has heard of.

Favorite FIJI memory: My favorite FIJI memory so far has been Sweetheart Sing. I didn’t really know any of the guys, but after some long practice hours I got to know a lot of the guys and learned some sick moves along the way. My parents were not really high on the idea of me being part of a fraternity but after the show they told me how happy they were that I had an oppor-tunity to be part of something like this.

What I have gained from my FIJI experi-ence: In my short time as a FIJI I have gained so much. I have found a group

of men who believe in the same things as I do and are always there to help. This fraternity has done a lot for me and I’m excited for the experiences that are ahead. Becoming a FIJI was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I’m damn proud to be a brother.

My plans for the future: I’m gonna to get married on top of a mountain, and there’s going to be flutes playing and trombones and flowers and garlands of fresh herbs. And we will dance till the sun rises. And then our children will form a family band. And we will tour the countryside…but I really have no plans for the future, I’m taking it one day at a time.

Dan Jessen

About Me: Hi. My name is Pat and I hail from a mediocre town near Chicago called Mundelein. I’m a biology ma-jor here at Drake and I’m hoping to continue the lacrosse team that’s be-ing started here (by Fiji’s) and possi-bly turn it into a team one day.

Favorite FIJI memory: I have a ton of them, but definitely one that stands out the most is Anchor Splash. Go-ing into it I thought it was going to be awful waking up at 5 every morning to do synchronized swimming with a bunch of guys that I was still trying to get to know. Turns out, our routine was sick, we all had a ton of fun and became a lot closer, and we rallied on the day of anchor splash to come from behind and beat Sig Ep due to several wins throughout the day.

What I have gained from my FIJI experi-ence: More than I could have hoped for.

I never really saw myself joining a fra-ternity and I actually just rushed to know what each house was and so I could get some free wings. It ended up being one of the best decisions that I’ve made so far. I have never been a part of some-thing that is so meaningful not only to me, but to a common group of guys who I’m truly proud to call my brothers.

My plans for the future:No serious plans so far. I hope to travel and see as much of the world as I can (hopefully with my bio degree working with me on that).

Pat Bradley

About Me: Tim Sullivan, 24 years old, 6th year pharmacy student. Psi class member.

I’m currently on rotation at UNC hos-pital in Chapel Hill. I’m spending my days working in the surgical ICU where most of the patients arrive as

a result of some traumatic accident (car crash, stabbing, gun-shot, etc…). Amongst other rotations, I also spent 5 weeks at Lake regional Hospital in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. This was a particularly interesting 5 weeks considering another former Delta Iota brother, Kris Gerber, is a staff phar-macist there.

Favorite FIJI memories: -Rushing the court with all the brothers when Drake beat University of Iowa in basketball at home for the first time.

-My first FIJI ski trip in Breckeridge back when I was a pledge.

What I gained from my FIJI experi-ence: I gained many skills needed to cope with life after college. I learned how to compromise, how to work as a team, and how to foster meaning-ful friendships. I also learned how to safely crush a beer can on my head (Kudos to Logan Hanley).

My plans for the future: I have signed on for a pharmacy residency position with a Des Moines based company named Outcomes Pharmaceutical health Care. This is a one year posi-tion. After that, I’m not sure where I’ll be.

Brothers,This past year in FIJI we wel-

comed a new aid to our Rush process -- a scholarship for incoming fresh-men. The Persistent Leader Scholar-ship, named after Calvin Coolidge’s famous Persistence quote, was awarded to 12 men who exemplified outstanding scholarship, excellence in extra-curriculars, and involvement in community service in high school.

For the 2009/2010 school year we gave out $2,000 in scholarships -- 4 $250 scholarships and 8 $125 scholarships. During rush we were able to sign 3 of the 4 $250 recipients

and 2 of the $125 recipients, along with one person we interviewed that just missed the scholarship cut.

One reason we were so efficient at signing applicants was because of our continued contact with them throughout the summer and the be-ginning of the school year. This put us at a more competitive advantage than we’ve been at in the past cou-ple years and we reaped the ben-efits. The average first semester GPA for the six pledges that were prod-ucts of the PLS was 3.54.

The money for the scholarship

was provided through an anony-mous graduate donor. This year, the house will be funding the schol-arship, while also doubling the bud-get to $4,000. This will provide for more interviews to be done in person, while also making it more competitive financially than the Balanced Man Scholarship. Mitch Webster and Paul Copoulos are taking over as co-chairs of Rush and the PLS, so if you are in-terested in becoming involved in the process, please feel free to contact them by clicking on either name.

Scenes from FIJI?

DELTA IOTA FLICKR STREAM

Right now you are probably wondering where the pictures that usually fill the last page or two of the publication are hidden. Just as the format of distributing the publication has changed, “Scenes From FIJI” have also changed. We have moved all of the pictures over to Flickr so that graduates can always access the pictures of the chapter. This is also a better way of storing pictures and keep-ing a running history. We are extremely excited to introduce this platform to our graduates and hope you like the change. The link is provided below so you can check out what has been happening over the past year in the Delta Iota chapter.

Thank you for reading this winter publication. We will continue to bring you information about the house on a thrice yearly basis and look forward to even more advancements in the coming months. Expect to have another publication around June highlighting all of the great accom-plishments of the brothers this year.
