SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES

Currently Scheduled Events We have to reschedule our visit to Schulte and Herr Restaurant until Wednesday, November 6. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Tuesday, November 5, by calling the church office (799-3361). We have tentative plans to see “Downton Abbey” at Clarks Pond Cinema on Thursday, November 7, leaving the church at 11:45 a.m. as long as it is still in the theater. Please RSVP by November 5 so we can purchase senior tickets ($8.95 each) ahead of time. We will meet at SMCC for lunch on Friday, November 15, at noon. The price is $15 plus gratuity. Please RSVP by November 8. Our next S.A.M. meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, in the 2nd-3rd grade classroom above the church office. S.A.M. meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month. We would love to see you there and hear your input and ideas about possible events and activities.

Senior Moments S.A.M. also has a monthly newsletter, “Senior Moments,” that highlights our activities for those over 55 years old. If you would like to be on our mailing list, just call the office (799.3361).

Eskimo Club

The purpose of the Eskimo Club is to promote fellowship among the men and women of the church and to further the interests of the church. Each meeting includes some gathering time, a quick business meeting, a wonderful meal and either a presentation or some entertainment. You do not need to be a member of the church to participate and join the club. The Eskimo Club will meet on Wednesday, November 6, at 6:15 p.m. in Guptill Hall. If you are not on our regular call list but would like to attend, you must make a reservation by calling either Rich Mead (807-4663) or Scott Berry (767-0236). The cost of the meal is $15 and the deadline for making or canceling reservations is 6 p.m. Monday, November 4. Dinners are by CVC Catering Group. Our special guest this month will be Chief Edward Googins, South Portland Police Department. After 47 years in law enforcement and 25 years with the SPPD, Chief Googins will retire in January of 2020. We are sure the Chief will have much to say about his lengthy career in law enforcement.

Acolytes Calling all third graders and higher who would like to be an acolyte this year. The next acolyte training is on November 3. Please contact Anne Fuehrer [email protected] if you would like to take a special part in our morning worship.

Our Family Promise guests left on Sunday, October 27, marking the end of our ninth Family Promise Host Week. Thanks to you, 2 families – 2 adults and 8 wonderful children - spent the week at our special church facility. We struggled with communicating with them as they spoke very little English, but we were able to pull together our resources and found ways to connect.

We had 43 volunteers and their families participating in the program this time, and we are most grateful for your generosity of time, energy and resources to make our families feel welcome, safe, warm and fed. We sincerely hope it was an enriching experience for you. Words can’t express our deep gratitude to all of you for all that you have done to make Family Promise a special and successful program at FCC UCC.

Our next opportunity to host Family Promise will begin on Sunday, December 29. We know that is a very busy time for everyone so we are hoping people will be able to plan ahead so that we can provide our families with a great time and wonderful food.

Thank you one and all for everything you do to make Family Promise such a huge success! We wish you a warm, happy, fun, and safe Thanksiving. And we’ll be back in touch in December!

Gin Micucci, Betsy Westcott-Keiter, Linda and Peter Foss

FCCUCC is again providing bountiful Thanksgiving baskets for 30 families this holiday season. The baskets with our collected food items will be packed and distributed Sunday morning, November 24.

In order to maintain consistency in the contents of the baskets, there will be specific items requested, such as vegetables, potatoes, pie shells and filling, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.. Items for the baskets will be printed on labels that will be available during Fellowship Time after the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, November 3, 10, and 17. Take labels for the items you will contribute, as many labels as you wish, and bring those food items to church Sunday morning November 24. The food will be collected in the chancel area by the altar. A collection box will be available at church by the Wright Pavilion entrance for donations to be dropped off prior to November 24 if necessary.

If you are not able to get to the labels, but wish to contribute, please bring canned vegetables or fruits.

Anyone who would like to stay after 10 a.m. worship on November 24 and help pack the baskets in the chancel area of the sanctuary is welcome.

Your generosity is appreciated. Mission Outreach Team

The Fundamentals of Nonviolent Communication

Learn the basics of Nonviolent Communication with CNVC trainer Peggy Smith in a workshop starting Friday evening, November 1 (6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.); Saturday, November 2 (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.); and Sunday, November 3 (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Peggy’s workshop offers an engaging, stimulating way to learn concrete skills for using daily conflicts to relate more authentically and compassionately. You will learn about Interpersonal Neurology -- what is happening in our bodies when we are reactive -- and how to build self-regulation capacities. The workshop environment fosters safety, depth and fun. The event is held at First Congregational Church, and the cost for the weekend if $150 with a $10 fee for those registering online. Church members should contact Elinor Redmond directly at (650-8579) for special pricing. You can learn more about the workshop, download a brochure and/or register on the Clarity Services website (https://www.clarityservices.us/events-2/2019/11/1/connecting-across-differences).
