Hello Families,

This past Tuesday, I took my kids out for a drive to see Holiday Lights. I wanted to get that tradition checked off the list before the snow melted away. Anyway, we were able to find some of the best lights to music in our area using a quick Google search. I shared some of the videos on FB with

friends/family and had many ask for the addresses of these spectacular displays. I thought I might share those details with my Northwoods family as well!

The houses we visited are pretty wide-spread, but you should be able to get one or two into your twinkle tour if you are so inclined! Lights move to the music with your car radio tuned to 93.5. They all have different music, though, and the station will only work close the houses. Be sure to turn off your car lights, pull to the side of the road, and watch for traffic. So bundle up the kids, fill a thermos, and enjoy this fun free holiday outing. Google Maps works well to bring you right to these locations:

EC Lights (located by Nestle/Mays Floral side of Eau Claire) 3748 Maywood Dr. 14th St. & Vine is close by and have a great display too, but no music.

Christmas in the Valley (located off 93 on the way to Eleva) E3860 Redwood Food & new toy donations are welcome, but not expected

Located in Altoona, by the lake 2196 Moonlight Bay Dr. Altoona Monetary donations to the Humane Society are welcome, but not expected

There is a home in Chippewa Falls that also has musical festive lights. 19471 74th Ave, CF. Car radios should be tuned to 91.54. My family has not yet been to Irvive this season, and we plan to stop there when we head up to Irvine Park in Chippewa to take in the park lit up in all her winter glory. Whatever you are celebrating over the break, may it be a holiday or just being together – enjoy the peace of the season, and the extra days with your kids.

Blia Schwahn a proud North High school graduate, presented a lesson to the

students about Vietnam last week. Our younger Eagles learned how different

life is in Vietnam than here in the U.S. and a bit about why so many refugees

came to this country in the 1970’s after the Vietnam War. Mrs. Schwahn is the

district’s School/Community Liaison. As the School/Community Liaison, she

promotes cultural bridges between the ECASD schools, Hmong students, and

their parents.

Following Mrs. Schwahn’s presentation, the students were entertained by High

School students from both DeLong and North as they demonstrated some traditional Hmong

dances. After they returned to their classrooms, our students enjoyed a few native delicacies,

egg rolls and purple sticky rice.

Be a Part of Building the Next Generation by

Inspiring Young People to Embrace a Successful Future

When asked “What is the highlight of your JA Experience?”

Tammy McCartney replied, "Making a difference and

connecting the generations."

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization that partners

with local business and community members to bring programs

on work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to

area school students. Through JA, students learn how to run a business, how to budget, skills

needed to keep a job and are more inspiration to create realistic goals for their future careers.

The unique part of JA programs are the community volunteers in the classroom. Volunteers

share real-life experiences to students and provide insight about career success.

Volunteering for Junior Achievement is a rewarding way to give back to the community. We

have an array of volunteer opportunities. We also provide training to help you make the most

of your classroom experience. The only requirement we ask is to have a desire to learn and

share with students.

To learn if this position is right for you, please contact Mainhia Yang at [email protected] or

715-318-1460. If you aren’t able to volunteer, consider sponsoring a student at your school for

just $25

es Art Posts: Eagle Art For the month of January students in 2nd and 3rd grade will

have the opportunity to participate in the after-school art program. The dates are Jan. 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. Please sign up as soon as possible so the class list can get organized. If you need another form, contact Mrs. Wiechert [email protected] For more information, please contact Mrs. Schaller at: [email protected]

Eagle Art is made possible through a grant from the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. Thank you!

Artology. If your student really enjoys art, consider a Saturday class at the University taught by our own Mrs. Schaller. Classes start in January 2019. Perhaps consider giving the class to a child as a holiday gift? Mrs. Wiechert “gifted it” to her son last year (& will again this season), and he highly recommends the class! For more information on this opportunity, please follow this link: https://ce.uwec.edu/programs/artology/ Stay Creative!! - Mrs. Schaller

Students in Music are singing their hearts out and enjoying class, but they miss Miss Miller!

Here are a few ways to encourage speech development at home:

• Read!!! When you read to your student, you will be modeling great speech sounds. When you or your student read aloud they are hearing new vocabulary and your speech sounds. Even reading fun books with rhythm such as (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?) that let kids anticipate what happens. Talk about the pictures in the book and what is happening in the pictures. Your student may even start to memorize favorite stories.

• Everyday!! To reinforce your student's speech language, talk your way through the day. For example, name foods at the grocery store, explain what you're doing as you cook a meal or clean a room, point out objects around the house, and as you drive, point out sounds you hear. Ask questions and acknowledge your student's responses (even when they're hard to understand). Keep things simple but avoid "baby talk."

Looking for a good book to enjoy with your child over winter break? Or a last minute gift idea for under the tree? Books make the best gifts for girls and boys of any age! Here is a list of the “10 Must-Read Picture Books of 2018”: Love by Matt de la Pena She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women Who Changed History by Chelsea Clinton The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson Giraffe Problems by Jory John Elmore by Holly Hobbie Wordy Birdie by Tammi Sauer The Wall in the Middle of the Book by Jon Agee Islandborn by Junot Diaz I Walk With Vanessa: A Story About a Simple Act of Kindness by Kerascoet Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinz-Neal

Have a middle grade child? No problem! Here is a list that will appeal to them: Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed The Season of Styx Malone by Kekla Magoon Calling All Minds by Temple Grandin Betty Before X by Ilyasah Shabazz The Journey of Little Charlie by Christopher Paul Curtis Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller Bob by Wendy Mass The Lifters by Dave Eggers

Winter Spirit week in the Northwoods:

Monday was Long Winter’s Nap. Students and Staff alike spent the day cozy and comfortable in their PJ’s and sweats… Tuesday brought blocks of color as the Northwoods

Eagle dressed all in their own favorite color like the

bulbs on a string of lights. Wednesday brought out

the “Wacky” with mis-

matched shoes, back-

wards sweaters and

crazy hair styles. Next, Thursday was Deck

your Neck & Sock it to Winter. It was like

Wacky Wednesday all over again!

Friday, Staff students and teachers pulled out all the stops with crazy sweaters, ugly Holiday sweaters and the more festive outfits they could come up with. There will be more photos of all the great creativity that decked out halls, but the news letter was finished before photos could be uploaded.

Please look for a recap of Friday’s Fun in the first Eagle Wire of 2019. Happy New Year any Merry Winter Break!
