Ward’s “Johnnie Bamber” Reserve Winner; Miss Adelaide Moffett Wins Good Hands Up; Magee Takes Blue for Draft Horse Class. The Southampton Riding and Hunt Club's second annual horse show, held last Saturday at the Southampton grounds, was a banner success, with excellent classes, good judging and a very large crowd from all parts of Long Island East Hampton exhibitors did very well, with Mrs. Newell J. Ward’s brown gelding, Johnnie Bamber, re ceiving the reserve in the champion ship honors for hunters and jumpers, which was carried off by Curry Sauce, that good show horse, owned and shown last week by Mrs. John C. Loud of Syosset, L. I. Pairs of Draft Horses Shown to a Farm Wagon, by taking 1st. 2nd and 4th places. The C. E. Frankenbach team was third. Miss Grace Patterson’s Red Prince took fourth prize in the Road Hack group for 14.2 and under 15.2. while the large class was won by Miss Rcssmary Ward’s gelding Captain Harty, with Mrs. Jchn V. Bouvier 3rd's handsome black gelding. Show Me. Miss Rose mary Ward took the blue in the jump ing class for children under 16, with her brcthcr, Newell J. Ward jr., riding Jchnnie Bamber third, and Miss Ade laide Moffett riding High Hat, fourth. The Parent and Child class was won by Vincent Mulford and his son, while Gilbert M. Burdett and Miss Ruth M. Burdett won fourth prize in this group. Miss Leona Zalles of Devon, received a third prize in the saddle horse group over 15.2 hands with Bohemian Star. Mrs. Bouvier's Sliow Me was placed second to Miss Elizabeth Gari's My Laddie. Miss Carolyn Roberts won the light weight hunters with Nancy, while Mrs. Bouvier’s Stout Fella was second to Curry Sauce in tlie middleweight hunt ers. The local hunters group went to Miss Frances Robbins' Killala, for the President’s Cup, with Mrs. Robert Ap pleton's chestnut gelding Rock Bar second. Miss Ward's Boy Friend third, and Miss Carolyn Roberts’ Nancy fourth. Miss Caroline Clendenin Ryan, to Ronald Lambart Basset of London. England. Miss Ryan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clendenin Ryan of New York, and a granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thcmas Fortune Ryan of New Yoik and Virginia. Mr. Basset is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. Basset of London. He was educated at Eton College and serv ed in the World War with the Eton Brigade. Miss Ryan attended the Foxcroft School and Mile. Mousseux's, in Paris. She was presented to society in 1928. Miss Ryan is passing the summer with her parents, who are occupying the Ccopers Neck lane residence of the former Mrs. Frederick Martin Davies. No date has been set for the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Lucien Hamilton Tyng gave a dinner Sunday night at their lakefront studio. Four Fountains, in honor of the twenty-two members of the Hampton Players. After dinner the players rehearsed their new play on the stage which opens onto a terrace leading to the lake. The Misses Celia R. and Ruth Rob inson, Edward T. McLean and Robert McCullum are visiting Mr. and Mrs. William M. Duryea at Willett House, the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson Simonds. Among the August arrivals at the Irving are Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Fair and family of Kew Gardens, H. I. Cobb 3rd, and George MacWell. Mrs. David Dows has arrived from Charlton Hall. Glen Head, L. I.; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Shret have joined their son, having just returned on the Berengaria. Don ald McVicker is here from East Nor wich, and Mrs. Charles J. Keating has come from Brooklyn. Lyttleton Fox jr.. who is a senior at Yale University, sailed on the Aqui- tania on Wednesday for a few weeks’ visit in Europe. Tennis Week Attracts Southampton Colonists Tennis week at Southampton is at tracting the attention of Southamp ton’s colony, with the 47th annual in vitation tennis tournament beginning on Monday and continuiug until Satur day. Tomorrow evening the events of tennis week will climax with the ten nis ball at the Meadow Club. This evening there will be a dinner dance at Canoe Place Inn for the New York Boys' Club, of which Charles H. Sabin is president. He also will be chairman of the committee for this af fair and acting as sponsors will be prominent members of the Hamptons colonies. Exhibition dancing and songs by the small lads of the club will be among the features of the evening, Miss Marta Lindcrskold is in charge of the benefit. Rafaelo Diaz, tenor of the Metro politan Opera Company, will give a song recital on August 12. at Sunset Court, the Georgian mansion of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Kiser, which they have graciously loaned for this occas ion. Mr. Diaz, who is well known at this resort, will be welcomed, after a year’s absence in Europe. Many house parties are in progress this week, with the majority of the guests staying for the tennis tourna ment. Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Van Vleck jr., have as their guests at Bally- shear Miss Margaret Mower. Colonel Patrick Rafferty and Jack Curtis. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Armour of Chi cago, are visiting Mr. Armour's mother, Mrs. P. A. Valentine, at Valmay. Harry Bell will spend the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Malcolm Littlejohn, at Little Cote, where Mrs. Littlejohn's brother, Dr. George M. Bolling, also is a guest. Dr. Bolling is professor of Greek at the Ohio State University. Other guests at Littlecote are Mr. and Mrs. Edward N. Rich and their little son, Robert Littlejohn Rich, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Balliere. Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Macy of Mor ristown, N. J., are passing the week with Mr. and Mrs. George F. Vietor at their Main street home. Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Gray of New York, arrived to pass tennis week with Miss Elizabeth Banks Brundige at her home on Great Plains road. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Robinson Duff and their family will leave The Moorings next week-end for their farm in Ver mont. While there they will enter their hunters in the Woodstock Horse Show. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Claflln de parted last week for New York, and arriving this week-end are Mr. and Mrs. George Edward Kent, who have leased the Claflin villa in the Shinne- cock Hills for the month of August. Mr. and Mrs. Kent and their family passed last winter at Los Incas, the beautiful ocean-to-lake estate of the late Colonel Anthony R. Kuser, at Palm Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Claflin will re turn to Southampton ln September. Other changes in the cottage colony have taken place this month—Mr. and Mrs. Preston Davie, who have been oc cupying the Gordon bungalow on the ocean front, will sail for Europe on August 16, and Mrs. Richard H. Wil liams, who has been at Seven Ponds Inn, has leased the house for the re mainder of the season. Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Wilmerding and their family will conclude their stay at the John F. Harris house on August 7. to return to Tuxedo Park; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley G. Mortimer have leased the place for the balance of the sum mer. Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Roosevelt have arrived to visit Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Stewart Ellsworth at their ocean front villa. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hamilton Stew art have left Seaward for a fortnight’s visit in Bar Harbor, where their niece, Miss Ellen Cox Ewing of New York, and Rayito de Sol, Palm Beach, will be married to Thomas Archibald Stone on Monday. One of the most enjoyable social af fairs of the season was given Sunday night by Mr. and Mrs. John C. King of New York and Palm Beach, who gave a dinner for more than 40 guests at the Shinnecock Hills Inn. The Southampton Riding and Hunt Club's second annual horse show, held last Saturday at the Southampton grounds, was a banner success, with excellent classes, good judging and a very large crowd from all parts of Long Island East Hampton exhibitors did very well, with Mrs. Newell J. Ward’s brown gelding, Johnnie Bamber, re­

ceiving the reserve in the champion­ship honors for hunters and jumpers, which was carried off by Curry Sauce, that good show horse, owned and shown last week by Mrs. John C. Loud of Syosset, L. I.

Johnnie Bamber had previously won the blue in the ladies’ hunters and had taken two third places in the junior

John J. Magee of Watermill, cleaned up the opening class. Pairs of Draft Horses Shown to a Farm Wagon, by taking 1st. 2nd and 4th places. The C. E. Frankenbach team was third.

Miss Grace Patterson’s Red Prince took fourth prize in the Road Hack group for 14.2 and under 15.2. while the large class was won by Miss Rcssmary Ward’s gelding Captain Harty, with Mrs. Jchn V. Bouvier 3rd's handsome black gelding. Show Me. Miss Rose­mary Ward took the blue in the jump­ing class for children under 16, with her brcthcr, Newell J. Ward jr., riding Jchnnie Bamber third, and Miss Ade­laide Moffett riding High Hat, fourth.

The Parent and Child class was won by Vincent Mulford and his son, while Gilbert M. Burdett and Miss Ruth M. Burdett won fourth prize in this group. Miss Leona Zalles of Devon, received a third prize in the saddle horse group over 15.2 hands with Bohemian Star. Mrs. Bouvier's Sliow Me was placed second to Miss Elizabeth Gari's My Laddie.

Miss Carolyn Roberts won the light­weight hunters with Nancy, while Mrs. Bouvier’s Stout Fella was second to Curry Sauce in tlie middleweight hunt ers.

The local hunters group went to Miss Frances Robbins' Killala, for the President’s Cup, with Mrs. Robert Ap­pleton's chestnut gelding Rock Bar second. Miss Ward's Boy Friend third, and Miss Carolyn Roberts’ Nancy fourth.

The hunt teams went to the Suffolk Hunt, with the Wilmarland Farms team second, Miss Rosemary Ward's team third and Miss Frances Robbins’ team fourth.

Mrs. Clendenin J. Ryan announces the engagement of her daughter. Miss Caroline Clendenin Ryan, to Ronald Lambart Basset of London. England. Miss Ryan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clendenin Ryan of New York, and a granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thcmas Fortune Ryan of New Yoik and Virginia.

Mr. Basset is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. Basset of London. He was educated at Eton College and serv­ed in the World War with the Eton Brigade.

Miss Ryan attended the Foxcroft School and Mile. Mousseux's, in Paris. She was presented to society in 1928. Miss Ryan is passing the summer with her parents, who are occupying the Ccopers Neck lane residence of the former Mrs. Frederick Martin Davies.

gave a dinner Sunday night at their lakefront studio. Four Fountains, in honor of the twenty-two members of the Hampton Players. After dinner the players rehearsed their new play on the stage which opens onto a terrace leading to the lake.

The Misses Celia R. and Ruth Rob­inson, Edward T. McLean and Robert McCullum are visiting Mr. and Mrs. William M. Duryea at Willett House, the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson Simonds.

Among the August arrivals at the Irving are Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Fair and family of Kew Gardens, H. I. Cobb 3rd, and George MacWell. Mrs. David Dows has arrived from Charlton Hall. Glen Head, L. I.; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Shret have joined their son, having just returned on the Berengaria. Don­ald McVicker is here from East Nor­wich, and Mrs. Charles J. Keating has come from Brooklyn.

Lyttleton Fox jr.. who is a senior at Yale University, sailed on the Aqui- tania on Wednesday for a few weeks’ visit in Europe.

Tennis W eek AttractsSoutham pton Colonists

Tennis week at Southampton is at­tracting the attention of Southamp­ton’s colony, with the 47th annual in­vitation tennis tournament beginning on Monday and continuiug until Satur­day. Tomorrow evening the events of tennis week will climax with the ten­nis ball at the Meadow Club.

This evening there will be a dinner dance at Canoe Place Inn for the New York Boys' Club, of which Charles H. Sabin is president. He also will be chairman of the committee for this af­fair and acting as sponsors will be prominent members of the Hamptons colonies. Exhibition dancing and songs by the small lads of the club will be among the features of the evening, Miss Marta Lindcrskold is in charge of the benefit.

Rafaelo Diaz, tenor of the Metro­politan Opera Company, will give a song recital on August 12. at Sunset Court, the Georgian mansion of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Kiser, which they have graciously loaned for this occas­ion. Mr. Diaz, who is well known at this resort, will be welcomed, after a year’s absence in Europe.

Many house parties are in progress this week, with the majority of the guests staying for the tennis tourna­ment. Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Van Vleck jr., have as their guests at Bally- shear Miss Margaret Mower. Colonel Patrick Rafferty and Jack Curtis.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Armour of Chi­cago, are visiting Mr. Armour's mother, Mrs. P. A. Valentine, at Valmay. Harry Bell will spend the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Malcolm Littlejohn, at Little Cote, where Mrs. Littlejohn's brother, Dr. George M. Bolling, also is a guest. Dr. Bolling is professor of Greek at the Ohio State University. Other guests at Littlecote are Mr. and Mrs. Edward N. Rich and their little son, Robert Littlejohn Rich, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Balliere.

Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Macy of Mor­ristown, N. J., are passing the week with Mr. and Mrs. George F. Vietor at their Main street home. Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Gray of New York, arrived to pass tennis week with Miss Elizabeth Banks Brundige at her home on Great Plains road.

Mr. and Mrs. Jay Robinson Duff and their family will leave The Moorings next week-end for their farm in Ver­mont. While there they will enter their hunters in the Woodstock Horse Show.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Claflln de­parted last week for New York, and arriving this week-end are Mr. and Mrs. George Edward Kent, who have leased the Claflin villa in the Shinne- cock Hills for the month of August. Mr. and Mrs. Kent and their family passed last winter at Los Incas, the beautiful ocean-to-lake estate of the late Colonel Anthony R. Kuser, at Palm Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Claflin will re­turn to Southampton ln September.

Other changes in the cottage colony have taken place this month—Mr. and Mrs. Preston Davie, who have been oc­cupying the Gordon bungalow on the ocean front, will sail for Europe on August 16, and Mrs. Richard H. Wil­liams, who has been at Seven Ponds Inn, has leased the house for the re­mainder of the season.

Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Wilmerding and their family will conclude their stay at the John F. Harris house on August 7. to return to Tuxedo Park; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley G. Mortimer have leased the place for the balance of the sum­mer.

Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Roosevelt have arrived to visit Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Stewart Ellsworth at their ocean front villa.

Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hamilton Stew­art have left Seaward for a fortnight’s visit in Bar Harbor, where their niece, Miss Ellen Cox Ewing of New York, and Rayito de Sol, Palm Beach, will be married to Thomas Archibald Stone on Monday.
