Eastcote Past Masters v Indian Gymkhana Saturday 13

th April

Lost 2(1) - 6(3)

The PMs were the only hockey playing visitors to Osterley this week and completed their league program under the Heathrow flight-path. The home team had a squad with 3 subs whereas the PMs brought a bare 11 so no problems managing the subs for Vijay today. In deference to our hosts we opted to play with only Lloydy and Addy up front and to try and overcome them in midfield by playing 4 in a diamond formation and hopefully having more legs than them. In the opening exchanges this proved very effective with

The EastcoNet 3 27th April 2019

Graham, Selwyn, Sati and Sardar all seeing lots of the ball and having long spells of possession. After 15 mins the PMs had the better chances with Lloydy and Addy both having half chances. At the other end Pali and Tim were keeping their wide men contained, leaving Gavin and Vijay to resume their centre back pairing. The home team had a few flourishes into the PM 23 but didn’t manage to get numbers forward so were contained by some great examples of front marking and intercepting of final passes. It wasn’t until the 3

rd short corner

that Gymkhana really posed any threat and that was duly dealt with. The midpoint to the half came and went with no goals and then like London buses 2 came along in quick succession, both in similar fashion. A short corner for the home team was in the 3

rd phase when it was illegally stopped on the line and

a flick awarded – it went in off the foot of the post despite a desperate attempt by Dave to get a stick on it. Not to be out done within 2 mins we had re-gained our composure and built an attack from the back, the ball found its way to Selwyn in the middle who beat his marker and fed Lloydy in their circle, Lloydy rounded another defender and got a pass off to Addy in a central position with just the keeper to beat, Addy went to complete his strike when his stick was impeded in a rather obvious manner and another penalty stroke awarded. Up stepped Selwyn to put the ball away for the equaliser with about 10 mins to go to halftime. The PMs then went on the hunt for a killer lead but unfortunately got caught out on the break and IG found a forward free in the D to score in the corner. Fortune was not favouring the brave as the PMs conceded a 3

rd on the stroke

of half time after a good move and some creative skill from the home team. The 2

nd half was equally balanced with all the PMs playing

well but their midfield superiority somewhat nullified as the home team packed more of their key players in there. This meant that Sati, Selwyn and Graham didn’t have the space in which to hold the ball and were hurried into their next move. Dave made a number of saves in quick succession but couldn’t get near a shot from their CF into the bottom corner to give them a cushion. The PMs were not done yet and in the 4

th quarter had a fair

few short corners which were variously stopped on the line or went just wide. When the 2

nd PM goal came it was Gavin

making an interception on the 23 and beating the next midfielder before releasing Addy wide on the left, he had time to progress before checking back and finding a good pass to Sati supporting from midfield. Sati was on the top of the D just about level with the left hand post when he received the ball, he swivelled neatly away from his marker and placed a delightful shot into the far corner. In the last 15 mins the game was getting stretched as the PMs sought to add to their tally and the efforts put in to that point started to slow our midfield down – unfortunately IG can be ruthless in such circumstances. The impact of their 3 subs was now more telling and they managed to free their attackers on about 5 occasions in the final 15 mins – we defended short corners really well and great credit goes to our runners, Sardar and Pali and the postmen Gavin and Vijay as we didn’t concede a goal from a short in the entire match. Unfortunately IG added a couple of goals toward the end but

this didn’t diminish the gutsy and professional performance put in by the PMs. Like last week the game was competitive throughout and felt much closer than the score line would suggest. The PMs were always in the game and every player contributed positively to make this a very enjoyable outing played in good spirits. Credit must go to the umpires on both sides who officiated with good composure and humour in an un-dramatic fashion. As for MotM this week, it could really be any of the squad but for his numerous saves it goes to Dave in the PM goal. “Màlmand” Just to finish – some numbers from the spreadsheet This season the Past Masters played 26 games using 22 players and with 10 wins, 15 losses and 1 draw. The squad was based around 15 players who accounted for 94% of appearances. The average score over the whole season was the PMs 2.6 goals vs the Opposition 3 goals, so pretty close on average Goal difference was extreme with 16 different values over the 26 games. The range of goals started at -7 (loss to Bromley and Beck) and went all the way through to +9 (against Amersham & Chalfont). Only +8 being missed with the goalless draw against Hampstead & Westminster s the 0 , we achieved 3 clean sheets and failed to score on only 5 occasions 8 players played more than 20 games with 2 playing all 26 and a further 7 players turned out in more than 50% of the games. The 67 goals were shared between 6 of the regular players. The top 3 scored 70% of the goals, Buddy 21, Lloydy 15 and “L” 11 The other regular scorers were Addy, Selwyn and Sardar who accounted for a further 20% of the goals. The remaining goals were singles, scored by 6 individuals. So predicting a PM result was not easy, maybe better trying to win the lottery.

Marathon Mike Mike Ransome is running in this year's London Marathon on 28

ASPIRE with a target of £3500. So far he has sponsors including Gift Aid of £1575. To sponsor Mike go to https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MichaelWRansome

'With many wondering , 'why?', and having to struggle with my own doubts, I have once again concluded that the mixture of a 'challenge', and the opportunity to support the very worthy work undertaken by ASPIRE, are good enough reasons to run my 7th consecutive London Marathon!

ASPIRE is a charity that seeks to assist those with spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis. A diagnosis of paralysis is a life changing one, bringing much uncertainty for those with the injury, as well as for their family and friends.

People with Spinal Cord Injury will lose muscle and sensory control below the level of their injury, and a large majority will become full time wheelchair users for the rest of their lives. Historically, the majority of spinal injuries have been sustained by those aged 21 to 30, with nearly three quarters of newly spinally injured people being male. However, Spinal Cord Injury is increasingly affecting older people now too.

ASPIRE offers many invaluable services at any point in time to those with a spinal cord injury. For example, ASPIRE provides short term housing that is fully wheelchair accessible, to enable patients to be discharged from hospital to live with, or at least close to, their families whilst long-term solutions are sought.

It also offers grants for equipment such as environmental controls, technology to ensure computer access is available to all, advice to patients in hospital, and ongoing welfare advice.

Through the efforts of ASPIRE much can be, and is, achieved. There is a cost, of course, and the charity seeks to meet much of this through the sponsored challenges undertaken by willing supporters, and the encouragement they are given by family, friends, and many others encountered in their daily lives.

I am made particularly aware of the realities of life after spinal cord injury by the accounts of my daughter, Selina, who continues her marvellous work, as a physiotherapist, with patients at The London Spinal Cord Injury centre in Stanmore.

As noted above, I am taking part in the Virgin London Marathon for the 7th consecutive year; many have been generous in their support in the past and I am hoping that they will once again help here, primarily to assist the work of ASPIRE, but also to spur me on

in my Marathon endeavour, Past few weeks in March have seen two 20 mile training runs, in Ruislip, and Hemel Hempstead. Both gruelling in the latter stages but under 4 hours, and with a course harder than 'London', so reasonably upbeat at this stage. And, of course, the 26.2 miles on Sunday, 28 April!

Thank you for reading this.

Best wishes

Mike/Michael

Dear parents and players,

Well done to all the teams who played in the Rover Oxford Festival Our U8s, U10s, U12s and U14 players had a great weekend at the festival with some outstanding results. Thank you again Joe for giving up your day to umpire the Eastcote teams on Saturday and to Colin C for helping out on Sunday. Thank you also to the coaches and the parents for their support – hope you all enjoyed the day. The season is almost over now but please do try to attend the finale and come along to the festival on April 28th – details below. Want to play over the summer? Please take a minute to read about the London Youth Games opportunities and to become involved. Jo Junior Section Captain

Junior vacancies – looking for a few volunteers for the U6s and U8s We still need TAPS for the U6s and U8s for the new season. A TAP is a Team Admin Person. They help organise the age group and assist the coach with the administration behind the team……...... You basically need to be able to let the parents know what is happening via email, WhatsApp or Teamer. The job won’t take hours to do but it will make a huge difference to the club and the coach and are such an important part of the Junior Section. Rover Oxford Tournament 13th & 14th April On Sunday, we took two U8 teams to Rover Oxford for what has become our end of season finale tournament. It was a very early start for all but in the end, it was well worth it! Our U8 B team played in a “fun” round robin league consisting of 6 teams. The team started off very well - winning their first two games with some excellent play - scoring five goals and conceding zero. Unfortunately, we were unable to repeat this in the next three games due to a combination of tiredness (matches were nearly all back 2 back and we had a very young team), other teams not adhering to the (not) very strict girl/boy ratio rule and critically, my own poor defensive coaching! A good time was had by all and some nice goals from Kanav, Sienna and Rafa contributed to a good team performance and it was nice to see the youngsters all playing with pride and celebrating (spoiler alert!) the A team's victory as well. The B team came 4th and were all awarded with well deserved medals! The A team consisting of Sena, Jyena, Elissia, Aanya Shree, George, Teddy, Rishi and Oscar were entered into the A league. First up were Cirencester and as seems to have become something of a character trait, Eastcote were slow starters. Conceding a goal seemed to spark the team into life and they hit back hard winning the game 3-1. Then came Bicester who seemed happy to disregard the rules on boy/girl ratios. No matter, they were dispatched 2-0. Wallingford were seen off with the same scoreline which meant a showdown with the two Oxford teams. Hawks came first and were seen off with ease, 3-0 this time. And so despite it being a round robin tournament, the final game between Oxford and Eastcote effectively became the final, both teams arriving with 100% records. The coaches were tense, the players less so. Eastcote toyed with their opponents for the first 3 minutes. Then, to quote a Russell Crowe line from his famous Gladitorial role, the order came from the players on the pitch to "unleash hell". Not one, not two, not three, not even 4. 5-0 was the final result! The very best was saved until last and as you can tell from these lines, the coaching staff got quite emotional. Played 5, won 5, 15 goals for, 1 against. We knew they were good but it was pleasing to have it so decisively confirmed. Eastcote have been bringing an U8 team to this event for at least 20 years and the only previous victory was in 2000 (if you are reading this and were part of that team, Colin C would love to hear from you). Well done to all involved. And so we approach the end of another season. The children will have their final end of season celebration and awards on Sunday 28 April. It has been a pleasure working with all the U8 children and from the coaching staff, a huge thank you goes to all the parents and carers for their support throughout the season. Please keep bringing them and one day these players can enjoy more success in Eastcote colours, perhaps one day for the 1st XI teams. Colin C, Simon S, Charlotte H - all of whom were once Eastcote Juniors themselves (Charlotte much more recently than the other two!) Eastcote U8 B Team

Eastcote U8 A Team being hounded by Paparazzi

Eastcote U14’s A Team The A Team found the transition back to the seven a side format a bit of challenge, but they moved into the business end of the tournament undefeated with two draws against Oxford Hawks and Cheltenham and two wins from Bicester and Wallingford. The set up a final four meeting with London Wayfarers who took their chances well and pushed us into a 3rd / 4th place payoff match against Oxford Hawks. Hawks played well, but sadly Eastcote did not manage the game properly, this resulted in a late equaliser and horrid penalty shuffles. One v one with 8 seconds to score is always hard and on this day it is fair to say we were 2nd best. Highlights of the day has to be the fine saves made by Matthew from Hawks drag-flicks and the team goal scored against Wallingford, I always like a simple back post tap-in. Andy Laz

Eastcote U14’s B Team The B team was a strong team on paper but for reasons that still have the coaches scratching their heads, they just didn't seem able to find any sort of groove. It was a clean sweep of losses. The best performance was a 3-2 defeat to eventual winners Cheltenham, at one stage holding them at 2-2. But it was not to be and the players were left licking their wounds. Never mind, it has been an excellent season for the entire U14 squad and it will be interesting to see how all of the players progress through next season. Colin C U14 Boys B team
