This year’s meeting had as its theme – “Honoring Our Military – Past and Present”. We had 260 members and guests in attendance which was a nice turnout. Our President and Master of Ceremonies Gloria Bradford called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon. We opened with the Presentation of The Colors by the fully uniformed Color Guard from the Sgt. John Basilone Detachment of the NJ Marine Corps League from Monroe, NJ, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a Moment of Silence. We then had a special presentation by SFC Jeff Mullins who served in the US Army for 20 years as a Medic and is currently suffering from PTSD. He spoke of his involvement as VP of Operations for Rebuilding Warriors, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization which provides service/companion dogs to honorably discharged veterans. These veterans are diagnosed with PTSD, TBI, and/or amputations. (If you would like more info on this origanization, you can call Jeff at 732/859-0324 or email him at [email protected]). Jeff introduced his service dog Zoey who sat quietly on the stage while Jeff spoke. His wife Nancy also spoke of how Jeff’s PTSD affects her and her husband’s relationship with Zoey. The club presented a check to Jeff for Rebuilding Warriors in order to provide a service dog to be named “JJ”, along with its training and supplies for a year, to another deserving veteran. The Color Guard then retired The Colors. Gloria led the group in giving a welcoming round of applause for our former service members, our new retirees, and our new club members. She then read a letter from Alex Gorsky who could not be with us. Alex’s letter reads as follows: Hello everyone,

First and foremost, as always, I want to thank you for your tireless loyalty and dedication to Johnson and Johnson.

Although I could not be in New Brunswick with all of you today—I’m about 200 miles south, in Washington, DC—I am truly grateful to all of you for the significant contributions you’ve made, and continue to make, to Johnson & Johnson. Your engagement helps inform the direction of our company and reminds us of the role so many generations of employees have played in building this great company. Every one of you have helped to make Johnson & Johnson the company it is today – the world’s largest, most respected and trusted healthcare company.

I know how important the success of J&J to all of you. Not only for your health and your families, but you depend on your pension and benefits, and many of you are shareholders of our company, too. You’ve put in honest, hard work for Johnson & Johnson, and you deserve a secure retirement with peace of mind. We continue to work hard to deliver just that.

With Our Credo as our inspiration, the strength of our broad base across human healthcare, and our commitment to delivering strong, consistent, long-term growth, I am incredibly confident in the continued success of Johnson & Johnson—and you should be, too.

Have a great meeting, everyone! Alex

Gloria read the names of our officers for 2017-19, but first thanked Gretel Cenegy for serving as the club’s interim Recording Secretary until this year’s installation of officers. Our 2017-19 Board is made up of Gloria Bradford, President; Juanita Hawkins, Vice President; Lorraine Walkiewicz, Treasurer; Gail Wash, Recording Secretary; and Donna Kostiw, Corresponding Secretary. Gretel Cenegy then took the vote of acceptance of our 2017-19 Board.

Our Treasurer Lorraine Walkiewicz gave her report and an update on our membership statistics. Marge Nighland-Mollema, Annual Meeting Committee Chair, thanked everyone for attending this year’s meeting. Juanita Hawkins, Events Committee Chair, gave an overview of last year’s trips—Hyde Park & the Culinary Institute, the Sight and Sound Theater in Pennsylvania to see their production of Samson, and a bus trip to NYC for those having theater tickets or wanting to shop for the holidays. She also reviewed the club’s trips planned for this year—a bus trip to the J&J Museum and Garden of Sculpture, a drive-yourself trip to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse for a show and lunch, and a bus trip in October to the Culinary Institute, lunch, and Hyde Park. Gail Walsh, Newsletter Editor and Website Administrator gave a report on our newsletters and asked members to send in newsletter suggestions.

Juanita Hawkins, club Vice President introduced our speakers and read their bios. Our first speaker Paul Anthony, head of Global Total Rewards & Workforce Analytics gave a slide presentation overview of J&J’s business. He also showed a short video which had been shown at this year’s Shareholders Meeting. His slide on Creating Value Through Portfolio Management in 2016 showed that J&J invested more than $9 billion in R&D, had 243 product approvals, 14 acquisitions & licensing approvals, 67 innovation deals & 21 new development deals, and was seeking strategic options for diabetes, and had 8 divestitures & out-licenses. The Full-Year 2016 Earnings slide showed 2016 Worldwide Sales of $71.9B, an increase of 2.6%; an Adjusted Operational Worldwide Sales Increase of 7.4%; and an Adjusted Diluted Earnings Per Share of $6.73, an increase of 8.5%. Another slide A Strong, Consistent, Sustainable Business showed 33 consecutive years of adjusted operational earnings growth, 55 consecutive years of dividend increases, and an AAA rated balance sheet, and with 70% of 10-year free cash flow returned to shareholders. A slide on Our Enhanced US Matching Gifts Program showed “What’s New” as a widened scope of potential beneficiaries to include any federally designated 501 (c) 3 organizations as eligible for matching gifts. We then took a 45-minute break in our program to enjoy the selection of delicious desserts and reconnect with old friends and former colleagues, and hopefully make some new friends. Attendees were able to complete our 2017 Annual Meeting Survey forms and Suggestion forms. There was a table in the back for the AIDS Walk NY to be held on May 21 manned by Chris Gerber from the Hyacinth AIDS Foundation in New Brunswick and our club member Bruce Moskowitz, MD. Per Bruce, J&J exceeded its fund raising goal of $4,000. Several donations were made by our attendees visiting this table.

Page 6: THE EASTERN SCOOP - jjerretiree.org ·

In the lobby there was a Community Service table manned by Kevin Turnbach J&J’s Talent Acquisition Sr. Sourcing Specialist and a member of the Veteran Leadership Counsel who was recruiting retiree volunteers to act as greeters at the USO Center at Newark Airport for those service men and women returning to or deploying from Newark. J&J supports the USO. The volunteer greeters will be invited to a luncheon meeting either at J&J Headquarters or at the USO Center at Newark Airport where they will receive greeter training, view a USO video, have lunch, and pack some items to be sent to service men and women overseas. Kevin had a good number of volunteers sign up. Next to Kevin’s table was a White Table which honors our missing and deceased service men and women. On this table there were a number of items symbolizing certain aspects of our losses of these heroic men and women. In the atrium there was a panel display presented by the J&J Museum. Our next speaker Lisa Blair Davis, Head of HR, Consumer Medical Devices presented news on J&J’s Abbott Medical Optics, Inc. acquisition regarding cataract lens. Lisa stressed the importance of vision care and said J&J Vision is poised to be the global leader in eye healthcare. Her slides showed that across the world 50% of people need vision correction, yet only 10% are being treated. Her slides also showed that J&J Vision is the largest surgical device company in the world; is the fastest growing pharmaceutical business in the industry; has 24 iconic brands with greater than $1B in sales; and has more than 100 teaching institutions around the world. Also, J&J Vision has the market-leading surgical & contact lens portfolio; a rich pipeline to access patient needs; served 60 million patients; 4 innovation centers on 3 continents; and shared patient focus and spirit of innovation. It has 11 manufacturing & R&D sites, product market presence in 103 countries, and 8,400 employees. Lisa was accompanied by Kip Cerra, J&J Vision’s East Coast representative, who presented slides on treatment options and surgery for cataract lens. His slides showed that 20.5 million Americans over 40 have cataracts, and 50% of Americans over 80 have cataracts. Three million Americans have cataract surgery every year with a success rate of 98%. Our next speaker was John Burgess, Jr. MD MPH, Medical Director, Americas. The subject of his slide presentation was “Supporting Veterans in the Work Place.” His slide Hiring Veterans Equals Good Business lists this is due to their strong work ethic, deep sense of mission, ability to work under pressure, and commitment to meeting deadlines. Veterans have leadership training, flexibility, teamwork, and include experience.

Lola Ngatia, Director, National Accounts for ARAG which is J&J’s Legal Insurance carrier gave us a thorough slide presentation on the legal insurance program offered by J&J. video and animated data. There are displays of vintage products and advertising for the company’s iconic products which include more than 100 vintage & modern BAND-AID Brand Adhesive Bandages tins and packages and advertisements dating back to 1886. The Credo Theater is an immersive cinematic theater experience based on Our Credo which is the company’s guiding statement of corporate social responsibility.

Norberto Guzman, our Annual Meeting Committee member, and John Kostiw, our Corresponding Secretary’s husband, acted as our roving photographers. Some of their photos from the meeting are included in our June newsletter and will possibly be put on an internet website.

A Suggestion/Survey box was available for members’ surveys and suggestions. A good number of suggestions and meeting surveys were received which we will be addressing at a future date and hope to either add to our website or include in a future newsletter. So we wish to thank all of you who took the time to complete our survey and suggestion forms.

President Bradford adjourned our meeting at 3:30 p.m., thanked everyone for coming, and expressed our hopes of seeing everyone again next year or at one of our upcoming trips or events. As each attendee exited the meeting, they were provided with a J&J gift bag. Our thanks to Cathy Gombas, Assistant to Lisa Blair Davis, who previously supported Global Benefits & Health Resources, in obtaining our J&J products and gift bags. Cathy has been a great help to the club over the past 5 years since our club inception. We would also like to thank Valerie Fernandez, Manager, Global Benefits, for all her help in following up on our speakers and their presentations.

We wish to thank our wonderful Annual Meeting Committee who contributed many hours in planning and working our Annual Meeting and for devoting time to assembling our 300 J&J gift bags. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and will return again next year.
