THE ECHO JULY - SEPT. 2017

Greetings fellow 1504 Knights,

I do hope you are enjoying these first few

days of the 2017 summer solstice with

family and friends. Please ensure you eke

-out some quality down time for yourself.

I can’t believe I have completed my first

year in office as Grand Knight. We have

done so much good in our community

these past 12 months and had some great

fun and laughs doing it. I am extremely

proud of our accomplishments and I hope

you are too!

We had our annual executive position

elections during the May 16th General

Membership meeting. There were a few

horse-races thus a few secret votes had to

be conducted for various positions…and I

was glad to see it! This helps solidify the

fact that we have many dedicated mem-

bers who are ready and willing to step up

to ensure all these important positions

get filled. The Executive is a very crucial

entity of our brotherhood as they help

navigate our Council through to our

many successes and steer clear from un-

wanted pitfalls. Joining me on the 2017-

2018 Executive Team are: Chaplain Fr.

Larry Parent, Deputy Grand Knight

Mike Szabo, Chancellor Tim Ferguson,

Financial Secretary Mike Wilhelm, Re-

corder Mike van Lemmeran, Treasurer

Reinhart Schreiter, Advocate Terry

Molloy, Warden Jonathan Molloy, Inside

& Outside Guards Chris Detzler, Max

Salman and Hank Helmond, Trustees – 3

year Sean Meaney, 2 year Wayne Curry,

1 year Mike Detzler and Past Grand

Knight Brian Schmalz. A warm welcome

fellas and thank you for stepping up to

help guide our noble causes. I would also

like to thank our outgoing Executive

members Pat McGrath, Ed Langlois and

Matt Brenner. Your support and team-

work helped to keep our finely oiled ma-

chine of highly committed members

squarely on track.

On the topic of membership, I have been

told that during our Kitchener Council’s

heyday (in the 1940s and 1950s) we

boasted a 1,300 plus membership. When I

joined the Knights a mere 11 years ago

we had just over 560 members in our

Kitchener Council. Over the years we

have seen our ranks continue to decline

and today we have fallen to 389 mem-

bers. There are numerous reasons why

this unfortunate phenomenon is occur-

ring throughout North America but the

important point is that we need to act. In

the spring of this year we invited our On-

tario State Deputy and his Recruiting

Coordinator to our Council Chambers to

train our members in new, innovative

recruitment techniques. We have used

this new training and I can tell you it is

netting us new prospects and members.

Once we have fine-tuned our methods I

am hoping we can greatly reverse our

shrinkage. Stay tuned…

Lastly and as always, I would like to en-

courage all our card carrying members to

come out to our monthly General Meet-

ings; especially those of you who haven’t

been out for a while. There is lots hap-

pening in our energetic Council and we

always welcome your views and vitality!

yours,

Obermeyer GRAND KNIGHT

Greetings good Knights and families,

The beautiful summertime is upon us and it is best spent enjoying what summer provides

– the ease of the outdoors and hopefully some well deserved vacation time. I remember

when I was young and my family would go to the 7pm Saturday night mass at St. Anne’s

parish in Kitchener. At the time St. Anne’s did not have air conditioning in the church.

July evening masses often had the feel of purgatory as the heat hung in the body of the

church with little breeze from the few open windows! At one of the very hot Saturday

night masses, Fr. Gerry Hayes stood up to read the Gospel. After we all sat down he

simply said: “Jesus loves you and have a good week ahead!” Needless to say we all sung Fr. Gerry’s praises that

hot July evening! St. Anne’s now has central air conditioning in the church.

Jesus continues to loves us! May you feel his presence this summer, staying close to him with the blessings of a

good, safe, rejuvenating, friendly and faith-filled summer.

Many blessings,

Fr. Larry Council 1504 Chaplain

Kitchener Knights of Columbus Strengthens Partnership

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – TUESDAY, MAY 2, 2017

GK Dave Obermeyer and PGK Brian Schmalz were on hand at the Second

Annual Beacons of Hope Breakfast and Awards Ceremony Tuesday May

2nd. The observance was hosted by the Waterloo Catholic District School

Board and its Trustees at the St. Anthony Daniels Parish Life Centre. A

student from each of our local St. Mary's High-school elementary feeder

schools and St. Mary's High-school were recognized for their exceptional

Catholic leadership and passion. Also acknowledged, was the solid part-

nership the Kitchener Knights of Columbus has formed with the Catholic

School Board.

Greetings Brother Knights,

By the time you read this article my big-

gest task as Deputy Grand Knight Coor-

dinator of the State Charity Car Draw

will be done. And again our Council has,

as always, sold out all the tickets we re-

ceived from State. I can’t find the right

words to thank all the Br. Knights and

their wives who give their time and effort

to sell the tickets at Stanley Park Mall.

Also thanks to those Brothers who were

selling tickets on their own. We need to

thank the mall for giving space to the

beautiful Mustangs (we had a different

vehicle for display every time) — big

thanks to Parkway Ford in Waterloo. My

wife and I spent many fun hours in the

mall selling tickets, promoting the

Knights of Columbus and listening to old

stories from Br. Knights who already did

their time for the Order. Thank to every-

body who was involved.

In April the State Convention was held in

Toronto. Besides your Grand Knight and

Deputy Grand Knight, a handful of Past

Grand Knights and Brother Knights

came in support with their experience

and knowledge. They were a big help to

us who went for the first time to the Con-

vention.

On the first Saturday of May we held our

4th annual Big Spring Cleanup. The

weather did not cooperate — it was rainy

and cold, but our brave Brothers showed

up at St. Anthony Daniel parking lot to

collect used electronics, scrap metal and

other goodies. Also the shred truck was

there too. The shred event collection

went to the Food Bank. Thanks to all of

those who helped or showed up for sup-

port.

In May we visited our churches for Rose

Sunday. The collected donations were

given to Pro-Life causes in the Region.

We held a First Degree for 5 new mem-

bers of the Council.

The weather is getting warmer now and

it is time for us to start to cut the Nativi-

ty sets and other Christmas decorations

we plan to put on the market when the

time is appropriate.

I wish all a wonderful summer.

Vivat Jesus,

DGK Mike Szabo

A Silver Jubilee is Recognized

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – MAY 6, 2017

Father Joseph de Viveiros, C.R., Pastor of St. Francis

of Assisi Parish, celebrated his 25th Anniversary to

the Priesthood on Saturday, May 6, 2017. The priest-

hood is not really so much a gift as it is a commission

to serve, a privilege to lift, and an opportunity to bless

the lives of others. Celebrating his Silver Jubilee as a

member of the Congregation of the Resurrection, Fa-

ther Joseph comes from North Bay. While residing

and going to school in that northern community, Fa-

ther Joseph personally came to know the support of

the Knights of Columbus in North Bay. His affection

for the Knights is manifested in his unfailing support

for Council 1504. At the 5:00 pm Mass and on behalf

of the Kitchener Knights of Columbus, Brother Gary

Megaffin offered congratulations to Fr. Joseph on his

25th Anniversary with the presentation of a Special

Prayer Enrolment offered by the Discalced Carmelite

Nuns of St. Agatha, Ontario.

Jubilarians Honoured

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – MAY 25, 2017

Each year the Congregation of the Resurrection recognizes those in the order who celebrate

their ministry anniversaries. This year the C.R. Jubilee Dinner was held at St. Francis of As-

sisi Church Hall on Thursday, May 25th and several dedicated clergy commemorated their

years serving God: Fr. Joseph de Viveiros, C.R. – 25 years

Fr. Paul Voisin, C.R. – 40 years

Fr. Murray McDermott, C.R. – 40 years

Fr. Patrick McKelvie, C.R. – 40 years

Br. Ed Benson, C.R. – 50 years

Fr. Chester Chmurzynski, C.R. – 60 years

Fr. Edwin Lapinski, C.R. – 65 years

The dinner was enjoyed with numerous members of the order and many invited guests with

Msgr. Murray J. Kroetsch saying grace. It was a special evening for Fr. Joseph, Pastor at St.

Francis, who has been assigned new duties and, after 12 years, will be leaving his Parish at

the end of July. Members of the Kitchener Knights of Columbus attended the dinner with

Brothers Don Cameron, Wayne Curry, Chris Pugh and Gary Megaffin preparing and serving

refreshments to the invited guests.

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – MARCH 30, 2017

The historic St. Mary’s Parish Hall was the scene

of the Waterloo Region Catholic Schools Founda-

tion’s 12th Annual Bishop’s Banquet on Wednes-

day, March 29th. The K of C 4th Degree Honour

Guard ushered the Most Reverend Bishop Doug-

las Crosby of Hamilton into the hall at the com-

mencement of the festivities. Attending were

several members from Council 1504 which was

listed as a major “Silver Level” donor of the

event. A keynote address by Excellency Bishop

Crosby and a silent auction, rounded out the

evening. Proceeds from the banquet went to sup-

port the Faith Formation Programs in our Cath-

olic Schools.

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – MAY 11, 2017

Parishioner Brother Ed Langlois reports the Annual St.

Anne Catholic School Fundraiser was held May 4th.

The campaign is held each year to help bolster the

school’s teaching materials and supplies. Coordinator

port of the Kitchener K of C and Council 1504 is labeled

on a plaque prominently displayed in the school as a

major sponsor.

Local Boy Wins

KITCHENER, ONTARIO – JUNE 12, 2017

Congratulations go to 13-year-old

John Karl Legado who came out the

regional winner of the Knights of Co-

lumbus 2017 Basket Ball Free Throw

Championships.

Competitions were held at St. David’s

Secondary School, with over 150 par-

ticipants competing.

Progressing in his age group and after

a victorious shoot-out, the St. Aloysius

School student won the Joe Cinti Me-

morial Trophy scoring five out of five

baskets.

Sponsored by the Knights of Colum-

bus, the Annual Ontario State competi-

tions are held to determine the winner

from both the boy’s and girl’s catego-

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region the Big Winner KITCHENER, ONTARIO – JUNE 12, 2017

It was a windy, wet day but that didn’t deter the action at the Shred All truck.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region was a big winner as a result of cash and food donations

made at the Knights of Columbus Big Spring Clean-up. Over several hours during the event,

supporters contributed 336 pounds of food and $1,263.80 in cash donations.

According to Angela McCall, Food Bank Donor Relations Coordinator, the combined food and

cash will go to give 4054 meals to those in need. Angela remarked that, notwithstanding the

inclement weather, this year’s K of C campaign has surpassed previous results.

Another successful campaign is anticipated next year.

No Help From Mother Nature KITCHENER, ONTARIO – SUNDAY MAY 7, 2017

Going back to September 2013, Council 1504 has organized the K of C Great Spring Cleanup six

times and each year the results have been tremendous. The scene was Saturday May 6th at St.

Anthony Daniel’s parking lot. Raising almost $10,000 in the five previous drives, this year was

no exception as the wind and rain didn’t deter the hard work of many dedicated Brother

Knights.

This popular event, which accepts unwanted electronics and scrap metal, produces much need-

ed funds to enable the Kitchener Knights of Columbus to maintain its charitable works within

the community. Supporting the drive was the Shred All truck which was kept busy resulting in

the Food Bank of Waterloo Region receiving donations amounting to $1,264.00, exceeding re-

sults from last year.

Braving the elements were Brothers Manfred Aulich, Terry & Jonathan Molloy, Sean Meany,

Pat McGrath, Chris & Mike Detzler, Gerry Kelly, Mac Graham, Charley Sellers, Wayne curry,

Dave Hudder, Reinhart Schreiter, PGK Brian Schmalz, Peter Penlington, Fernando Melo An-

drew Kersey, Rem Roque, Tim Ferguson and GK Dave Obermeyer. Council’s energy continues

with a big “thank-you” to all those Brother Knights who made this day the success it was.

Please remember in your prayers the good health of the following Brother Knights and their spouses:

All praise and glory are yours, Lord our God. For you have called us to serve you and one another in love. Bless those who have grown in your service and give them courage and strength in their faith. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
