Placing yourself back at the top of your own “to do” listmight sound like a very selfish thing to do - for we haveheard time and time again that we need to give ofourselves, and love our neighbor as we would love ourown selves. Many are the times when we exhaustourselves to the breaking point, dealing, helping andbeing there for everyone else. I recently heard that“When you start to sacrifice yourself for other people,you make them a thief because they are stealing fromyou what you need and they don’t even know it.”

I write of this because I am fully aware that a lot of usare victims of such circumstances in our lives -circumstances that make us struggle at the very core ofour being for we live under the assumption that themore we take on, the more “in the favor” we will be“with our heavenly Father.” In the process, however, weforsake the heavenly being who breathes on to us thebreath of life, for God abides in each and every one ofus. God created every single fiber of our being in love,and gave that gift to us to cherish, to nurture and tokeep safe until each and every one of us is called homeagain.

At Easter we celebrate the resurrection of thatrepresentation of love who became flesh and dweltamong us. We celebrate the power of life over death,the force of calm in the midst of chaos, the triumph oflove over injustice. My brothers and sisters, Jesusalready won the battle. Our job as the community offaith is to assure that we are never guided to the brinkof destruction that is created by our insecurities, biasesor the lack of compassion towards our brothers andsisters who might appear to us to be different.

What I know to be the truth is that we can only answerand are responsible for our own individual selves andthe energy we individually put out into the world. Byplacing ourselves at the top of our own list and assuringthat all is well with our soul, we get a little step closer tobeing at one with God. And, being at one with God getsus a little bit closer every day to being at one with ourneighbors, our sisters, our brothers, our fathers, ourmothers. Ultimately, peeling off all the layers ofpreconditioned judgments that we have all placed onourselves over the years, and seeing in ourselves whatGod sees in us - his own beloved children whom heloves so much - we are able to share a more perfectlove with God’s creatures all around us.

Poniéndose de nuevo en la parte superior de su propialista "para hacer" puede sonar como algo muy egoísta- porque hemos oído una y otra vez que tenemos quedar de nosotros mismos, y amar a nuestros prójimoscomo a nosotros mismos. Muchos son los tiemposcuando nos agotamos hasta el límite, tratando,ayudando y estando ahí para los demás. Hace poco oíque "Cuando se empieza a sacrificarse por los demás,les hacen un ladrón porque están robando de usted loque usted necesita y ellos ni siquiera lo saben."

Escribo esto porque estoy plenamente consciente deque muchos de nosotros somos víctimas de talescircunstancias en nuestras vidas - circunstancias quenos hacen luchar en el centro mismo de nuestro ser,porque vivimos bajo el supuesto de que cuanto másobramos, más "en el favor" seamos" con nuestro Padrecelestial." En el proceso, sin embargo, abandonamosel ser celestial que nos respira el aliento de vida,porque Dios habita en todos y cada uno de nosotros.Dios creó a cada fibra de nuestro ser con amor, y nosdio ese regalo para cuidar, alimentar y guardar conseguridad hasta que todos y cada uno de nosotrosestamos llamado a casa de nuevo.

En la Pascua celebramos la resurrección de esarepresentación del amor que se hizo carne y habitóentre nosotros. Celebramos el poder de la vida sobrela muerte, la fuerza de la calma en medio del caos, eltriunfo del amor sobre la injusticia. Mis hermanos yhermanas, Jesús ya ganó la batalla. Nuestro trabajocomo la comunidad de fe es asegurar que nuncaestamos llevado al borde de la destrucción que escreado por nuestras inseguridades, prejuicios o la faltade compasión hacia nuestros hermanos y hermanasque puedan aparecer a nosotros como algo diferente.

Lo que yo sé es esto, la verdad es que por nuestrapropia cuenta podemos responder y estar responsablesde nuestras propias vidas individuales y de la energíaque individualmente ponemos en el mundo. Alsituarnos en la parte superior de nuestra propia lista yasegurar que todo está bien con nuestra alma,tomamos un pequeño paso más cerca de ser uno conDios. Y, de ser uno con Dios, nos pone un poco máscerca todos los días a estar en armonía con nuestrosvecinos, nuestras hermanas, nuestros hermanos,nuestros padres, nuestras madres. En última instancia,pelar todas las capas de juicios precondicionados quetodos nos hemos puesto a nosotros mismos durantelos años, y de ver en nosotros mismos lo que Dios veen nosotros - sus propios hijos amados que se amatanto - estamos capaces de compartir un amor másperfecto con las criaturas de Dios que nos rodean.

And if I go toprepare a place for you, I will come againand will take you to myself, so that where Iam, there you will be also.” - John 14:1-3

Lord, you have told us that where you go, we willbe also. We have decided to follow you, to be yourdisciples, and you have led us into the heart of theworld’s pain. You have told us where you go, wewill be also. We have followed you to a cross andwe hear you gasp your last words to the God youmade real for us, finally saying “into your hands Icommend my Spirit.” Where are you going now,Jesus? How do we follow? Grant us the faith to bewith you and to trust that you are with us on theGood Fridays of our lives. Help us to commend ourspirits to the Eternal God of love. Help us to trustthat the Good Fridays are not the end - and to trustyour promise that there is something yet to come,that there is a dawn at the end of this dark night.Help us to trust in and live out your love, even inthe dark nights of doubt and grief, fear and anxiety,violence and injustice, help us to be foolish enoughto believe that your love will have the victory in ourlives and in this world. Help us in this time and thisdark place to commend our spirits to your Spiritwhich now flows in and out of the heart of God.Help us now to soar where you have led - ours thecross, the grave the skies. Help us not to give upfollowing you now in this darkness, lest we missthe dawn ahead.

We stand here at the foot of your cross, in fear andin hope, praying that you are not gone. Whathappens next, Jesus? O God, help us not to giveup. Help us to keep listening for the Word beyondthe last words. Help us listen for the Word beyondthe silence of the cross. We are listening Lord. Weare listening for Easter. Amen.

Te hemos seguido a una cruzy que te escuchemos gritar sus últimas palabras alDios que te hizo real para nosotros, finalmentediciendo "en tus manos encomiendo mi Espíritu."¿A dónde vas ahora, Jesús? ¿Cómo seguimos?Danos la fe para estar contigo y confiar en que tuestas con nosotros en los Viernes Santos denuestras vidas. Nos encontramos aquí, al pie de la cruz, con elmiedo y con la esperanza, rezando que no te hasido. ¿Que sucede después, Jesús? Oh Dios,ayúdanos a no ser vencido. Thank you so much to all the many volunteers of all ageswho helped to make our Rummage Sale such a big success onMarch 10. We not only worked hard but had a lot of funtogether as well.....

Several of our members went up to attend the Open Housecelebrating the reopening of parts of Camp Colby on March4. RETHA MATSON, LaDELL and LANI STAPP, LOISPRICE, ROB GRAY, JONATHAN, SAMANTHA andGENESIS MORENO, and DAVID FARLEY all had a goodtime seeing the beautiful camp again. There is still much todo, but it was encouraging to see all that had been saved andall that had been repaired.....

Our prayers are with our Mission Work Team who arespending Holy Week in Gulfport, Mississippi, and NewOrleans helping to build houses forfamilies displaced by Katrina. See apicture of the group as we surroundedthem with our prayers during worship onMarch 25. Muchisimas gracias a todos los muchos voluntarios de variasedades que ayudaron en hacer tan exitoso nuestra Venta deCosas Usadas el 10 de Marzo. No solamente hemos trabajadofuertemente, sino tambien tuvimos mucho gozo.....

Algunos de nuestros miembros subieron para participar en laCasa Abierta celebrando la reapertura de algunas partes delCampo Colby el 4 de Marzo. RETHA MATSON, LaDELL yLANI STAPP, LOIS PRICE, ROB GRAY, JONATHAN,SAMANTHA y GENESIS MORENO, y DAVID FARLEY,todos tuvieron un buen tiempo mirando el bonito campo denuevo. Todavia hay mucho que hacer, pero era emocionantea ver lo que han sido salvado y todo lo que habia reparado.....

Nuestras oraciones estan con nuestro Equipo de ObraMisionera que pasarán la Semana Santa en Gulfport,

Mississippi, y New Orleans ayudando enla construccion de casas por las familiasdesamparada por Katrina. We all enjoyed a powerful worship service on March 25 withthe music of our combined Adult and Young People’s Choirs,supported by some talented musicians: ALAN MULLIGANon congas, DANA HOWELL on bass, DANNY BERNABEon keyboard, and DAVID FARLEY on guitar. We are excitedabout the growth in our music program!....

What a wonderful surprise it was to have GAIUS CHARLESin worship with us on March 25. It doesn’t seem like it’s beentwo years since we were blessed to have him as our ShalomSummer Intern. Gaius was in L.A. to do some film work andwe are thankful that he was able to spend Sunday morningwith us.....

Era una maravillosa sorpresa de tener a GAIUS CHARLEScon nosotros en el culto del 25 de Marzo. No parece que hapasado dos años desde cuando estabamos bendecido de tenera él como nuestro Interno de Shalom de Verano. Our prayers continue to be with JESSE GILBERT as sherecuperates and makes good progress while undergoingtherapy following her stroke. She currently is at WestlakeConvalescent Hospital.....

Pastor DAVID FARLEY wishes to express his heartfeltthanks to all who sprung for the 60cents (or more) to attendhis Birthday Dinner Concert on March 11. It was a large anddiverse turnout of church and community. Pastor David alsowishes to thank: REZA POUR and the Progressive IranianAssociation, for providing delicious food at no cost;FRANIE MADDELA, for the cake; and also the wonderful“Guest Artists” who performed with him: MARK PHILLIPS,CAROLINE LUAT YOUNG, JAZMIN MADDELA CHAN,DANA HOWELL, and both the CHILDREN’S andCHANCEL CHOIRS. We raised just over $2,000.00 to go tothe Gulfport Mission Work Team and the Native AmericanCircle of Life Food Distribution Program.....

Sherman McClellan keeps the repair items at our churchrepaired. He worked hard on the following two items thismonth: 1) Repairing the piano stool in the choir loft bymaking a new part and installing it so that the stool cancontinue to be adjusted for height, and 2) Installing a newballast in the florescent light fixture inside the ramp door.

LaDell Stapp pop-rivited the back on another brown foldingchair. Without LaDell’s help, the chair would have to bediscarded.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A blessed Holy Week to everyone. As you read this, some ofthe UMW and youth of our Church will be in Gulfport,Mississippi, helping victims of Katrina get back into theirhomes. Please keep all of us in your prayers. Also, a bigthank you to all those who worked so hard to make thismission possible. God certainly works in marvelous ways.

Nevertheless, the UMW continues to be active in other areasof mission. On Sunday, April 15, we will hold our next UMWmeeting where we will be collecting items for the EpworthApartments which was built for those persons who were infoster care but are now on their own. So, please, if you haveslightly-used-but-in-excellent-shape household goods, pleasebring them to the church and we’ll do the rest. Then, on thelast Saturday of the month, we will be providing lunch for theImmigration Clinic at Rosewood United Methodist Church.

Those who are applying for scholarships to attend the Schoolof Christian Missions must have their applications sent in bythe middle of May. The sessions will be held at BiolaUniversity from July 27 to 29. Our own Pastor David Farleyand U-2 Young Adult Missionary Stephanie Kimec will beteaching classes on Immigration with reference to the Bible.Other classes will be on Haiti and on Poverty. I am sure wewill all want to join them in a weekend of learning andpraising God.

We still need to work on the criteria for Mission Today Unitswhich include fulfilling our pledges, and being a Five-StarUnit in financial offerings. We also need to attend moreDistrict Meetings. Most of all, we need to add new membersto our Unit. Remember, they do not need to be Methodistwomen, so if any of you have neighbors who would like tojoin, please invite them. I know we continue reading ourbooks and keeping track what we have read. I want to thank

El Domingo, 15 de Abril, tendremos nuestraproxima reunion de las MMU por donde estaremosrecaudando cosas para los Apartamentos Epworth cual estabaedificado para las personas que fueron en cuidado de crianzapero ahora son por su propia cuenta. Entonces, por favor, sitienen poco-usado-pero-en-excelentes-condiciones-productos-del-hogar, por favor traigalos a la iglesia y nosotrosnos encargamos del resto. Luego, el ultimo Sabado del mes,estaremos proveyendo lonche para la Clinica de Inmigracionde la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Rosewood.

Los que estan aplicando por becas para participar en laEscuela de Misiones Cristiana tienen que mandar susaplicaciones el medio de mes del Mayo. Las sesiones pasaránen la Universidad de Biola de 27 a 19 de Julio. Nuestropropio Pastor David Farley y Tierna Adulta Misionera U-2Stephanie Kimec enseñarán clases de Inmigracion conreferencia a la Biblia. Otras clases serán de Haiti y de laPobreza. Estoy seguro que queremos juntarnos con ellos enun fin de semana de aprendizaje y alabanza a Dios.

Todavia tenemos que trabajar con los criterios para ser unaUnidad de Mision Hoy que incluye cumpliendo nuestraspromesas, y siendo una Unidad de Cinco-Estrellas enofrendas financieras. Tambien tenemos que participar en masReuniones del Distrito. Mas que todo, necesitamos añadirnuevos miembros a nuestra Unidad. And now, let me close by sharing with you some memories ofa dear beloved sister of ours. It is with deep sadness, but alsoan honor for me to write about FELIPA MERIDA, whopassed away the week of March 4. She was 101 years youngwhen she left to join our Lord in the mansion that Jesus hadprepared for her in heaven.

I first met Felipa at Los Feliz UMC. Felipa was a behind-the-scenes person. You would always find her working in thekitchen or helping in any she could. After she fell and brokeher hip, she was no longer able to come to church to attendworship services. This, however, did not stop her Christianlife because she always gave praise and thanksgiving to Godfor her life and for her friends.

On the first week of February of this year, Christiana and Ihad the privilege of having lunch with her. She was stillalert, but sad that Chris was leaving for Montserrat.

We held a memorial service for her on March 18 where weheard many inspiring testimonies from the people who werevery close to her. We sang her favorite songs and heard avery special message from Pastor David, whom Felipa alwaysconsidered her Pastor. Felipa was an inspiration and ablessing for all of us. Let me share a very short autobiographyof her. She lost her mother when she was 10 years old andwas raised by her aunt. She became a nurse in Guatemala,and then she came to the United States. While going to schoolhere in California, she was the nanny of a family, who up tillthe end, still considered her their Godmother. Although shenever married, she felt her God children were like her own.She did finish her nurses training and worked at WhiteMemorial Hospital until her retirement.

continuamos leyendo nuestros libros y apuntando lo quehemos leido. Quiero dar gracias cada uno por hacer las MMUde Echo Park una exitosa unidad. Dios nos ha bendecidoricamente a cada uno de nosotros, y yo se que él continuahaciendo lo mismo.

Y ahora, dejame terminar con compartir con ustedes algunasmemorias de una amada hermana de nosotros. Es con muchatristeza, pero tambien un honor para mi a escribir acerca deFELIPA MERIDA, quien falleció en la semana del 4 deMarzo. Ella era 101 años de joven cuando se fue a unirse connuestro Señor en la mansion que Jesus preparó para ella.

Conocí a Felipa en la IMU de Los Feliz. Ella era una atras-del-entablado persona. Siempre la encuentra trabajando en lacocina o ayudando en cualquiera que pueda. Despues dehaber caido y quebrado su pierna, ya no pudo venir a laiglesia para participar en los servicios. Esto, sin embargo, noprevenia su vida Cristiana porque siempre alababa y diogracias a Dios por su vida y por sus amistades.

La primera semana de Febrero de este año, Christiana y yotuvimos el privilegio de lonchar con ella. Ella todavia eraalerta, pero triste porque Chris ya se va para Montserrat.

Tuvimos un servicio memorial para ella el 18 de Marzo dondeoimos muchos testimonios inspirante de las personas quefueron cerca a ella. Cantemos sus alabanzas favoritas heoimos un mensaje muy especial de Pastor David, quien Felipaconsideraba su Pastor. Felipa fue una inspiracion y unabendicion para todos nosotros. Dejame compartir un muybreve biografia de ella. Se perdió su madre cuando tenia 10años y fue criada por su tia. Se graduó una enfermera enGuatemala, y despues vino a los EE.UU. Mientras estabayendo a la escuela aqui en California, ella fue niñera de unafamilia, que hasta el final, aun consideraba a ella como suMadrina. Aunque nunca se casó, ella considerable susahijados como suyos mismos. Termino sus estudios deenfermaria y trabajaba al Hospital Memorial de White hastasu retiro.
