eDear Neighbours,
This year is moving swiftly on and it is almost time for the annual Eden Valley Summer Festival, taking place from 24th May to 8th June. This also means another fun packed Edenbridge Fun Day (26th May) is just around the corner and this year it is going to be bigger and better than ever! This year’s theme is ‘Edenbridge by Sea’ and the town will be transformed into a seaside resort for the day with fun fairs, Edenbridge Rock, live music and more.
If you were at the event last year you will remember the sights and sounds of the car parade as Formula One cars let rip down the high street. This year there will be even more amazing vehicles as John Surtees OBE, the only person to have won world championships on both two and four wheels, will be giving onlookers the chance to see in action some of his rarely seen cars and bikes. You can stay up-to-date on
all the activities of the entire festival on the website www.edenvalleyfestival.org.uk. If you would like to help out during the Fun Day itself, the Chamber of Commerce who organise the event are keen to have more volunteers for marshalling during the Car Parade and for the Pram Race. As you would expect, safety is paramount and if there are not enough marshals, the event could be jeopardised. Please contact Di Kingham on 01732 866 444 if you think you can be of assistance.
I’ve had a lot of fun the last couple of months, especially at the CAB Big Screen Disco in March. I do enjoy an evening of dancing and it was even more special to have my first dance with my oldest step-daughter Katy (although with my dancing she might not have found it as special as I did). The CAB raised over £570 selling over 100 tickets for the event and they would like to thank all their friends and supporters for making the evening a huge success.
As usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to keep it in existence. The next deadline for content and advertising requests is Friday 30th May for the July/August 2014 issue.
Until next time....

re Keep calm and call Portland VetsPortland Vets is a small, family run practice, named after Portland Road in East Grinstead where the first practice was established in 2004. After years of planning, the time finally came in October 2013 for Portland Vets to open their doors in Edenbridge. I went along to the new surgery on Mill Hill to meet Veterinary Surgeon Jenny Kemp and Head Veterinary Nurse Alison Hawker to find out more about the newest vets in town.
The entrance and parking are located at the rear of the practice, easy to reach
from the main road. The reception area is bright, warm and comfortable and Jenny and Alison were there to welcome me. It was my first visit to a vet without an animal in tow but instead a camera
and note pad. Portland Vets is a small animal surgery, so anything from mice, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs to rabbits, cats and dogs will all receive a high level of expert
care from Jenny and Alison.
You can tell from looking around that everything has been designed and built to a very high standard and with the animals in mind. Alison took me on a tour of the shiny new facilities. My first stop was the individual cat and dog wards providing plenty of space for patients. All the rooms are climate controlled and have CCTV so you can rest assured that your pet is in safe hands.
As well as spacious, modern consulting rooms there is a well equipped treatment area with operating theatre, digital X-ray, dental unit and recovery ward.
Chief Vet Jenny Kemp has a Veterinary career spanning close to 20 years and her vision of providing a high standard of affordable veterinary care with a personal approach fits in with the ethos of Portland Vets. It was this ethos that compelled Jenny to leave the increasingly corporate environment of the Surrey veterinary practice where she had spent the last 15 years to return to
a family based surgery. Alison Hawker qualified with a degree in Veterinary Nursing in 2004 after realising her dream of working with animals following a farm visit when she was just 7 years old. After spending 5 years as Head Veterinary Nurse at a practice in South London, she decided she would rather work more locally and avoid the pressures of
commuting. Living in Edenbridge she is enjoying working with Jenny to develop this new practice.
Portland Vets is the only small animal surgery in the Edenbridge and Oxted area to provide their own in-house 24/7 emergency service. This is shared between the Portland Vets staff at both Edenbridge and East Grinstead sites. For clients this means that the emergency vet would be able to access your pet’s veterinary records and be better prepared for treating your animal in the event of an emergency.
So far Jenny and Alison have been carrying out a lot of routine work at the practice “but don’t wait until your pet is sick to register with us” recommends Jenny.
They have also organised Puppy Training Classes for clients which will be taking place on Thursday evenings at the site.
Since opening the practice, Jenny and Alison have been keen to get involved in local activities. As well as joining the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce they have also become sponsors at Edenbridge Rugby Club. When the new season starts, you’ll see Portland Vets signs adorning the rugby posts at the club during match days.

Over the last few months there has been a lot of activity taking place at village pub, The Four Elms Inn, since it was taken over by new management at the end of last summer. New Landlords, Peter and Lorraine, have thrown themselves into the task of turning the pub into more than just your average village pub.
Peter and Lorraine have managed many village pubs over the years so relocating to the picturesque village of Four Elms has not been a culture shock for them, already becoming
familiar faces in the local community.
You may have noticed the external redecoration taking place, but the inside has also changed drastically. Fresh paint has brightened up the interior giving it a new lease of life, a private dining area has been created in one of the nooks next to the bar (ideal for dining with a small group of friends or for a small business lunch) and, the biggest change has been the creation of a new upstairs restaurant, Faulkners, opened at the end of March.
Why Faulkners? After some research into the building it was discovered that Charles Faulkner turned the place into a pub in 1881.
Peter has also been busy with his new menu which is simple but with a good variety of dishes to choose from. This makes it easier to manage and Peter does his best in sourcing as much of the ingredients as possible from local
suppliers.
Well, with so much going on I thought it would be a good idea for me and hubby Russell to enjoy a meal in the restaurant and report back to you on what it is like to eat at the
revamped Four Elms Inn.
Before we sat down, Peter and Lorraine took us on a tour of the pub so we could see first hand all the things that had been done and what was still in progress. At the time of our visit (mid-March) the
restaurant wasn’t quite ready so I’ll let you know in the next issue what it’s like (if you haven’t already been to see it for yourself ).
We also enjoyed a pre-dinner drink and Russell was delighted to find ale available on tap. I stuck with my usual, a glass of Merlot (large), and we joined the gathering in the main bar - a friendly, welcoming group.
As we sat down, Lorraine handed us our menus, went over the Specials, and with soft, chilled music playing in the background we settled in for the evening. Another couple of tables filled up as we decided upon our menu choices, clearly diners who knew the food well which is always a good sign.
Whilst I stuck to the main menu, Russell decided he was feeling fishy and ordered off the Specials menu (this is changed every few days depending on what Peter brings in so worth checking out each time you visit).
Starters:
Laura - ‘Whitebait with homemade tartar sauce & mixed leaves’ - £5.95
The portion size was ample and the whitebait crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The ‘mixed leaves’ were fresh and crisp making
for a lovely starter. I would also enjoy this as a bar snack.
Russell - ‘Chicken goujons served with a sweet chilli dip and mixed leaves’ - £5.95
The chicken tasted very fresh - it was hot and tender on the inside and the crispy coating was perfect - it couldn’t have been any better.

Mains:
Laura - ‘Four Elms own 6oz burger served with smoked cheese, gherkin, salad and home cut chips’ - £9.95
Wow - with onion rings too! I’m rather partial to onion rings so they were a lovely surprise. The chips
were delicious and Peter told us how he double frys them to get the flavour and crispiness just right. The burger was also handmade using meat from Allmans Butchers. A meal that certainly won’t leave you going hungry.
Russell - ‘Seabass pan fried in butter and parsley’ - £11.95
The large portion of Seabass was served with asparagus and new potatoes. The Seabass tasted fresh and fleshy and the asparagus
tender. Everything worked really well together and the meal was thoroughly enjoyed.
As well as providing food at lunchtime and dinner, the pub also provides the venue for a
local business breakfast networking group as Peter is keen to promote the pub as the ideal location for both pleasure and business.
There are also regular events taking place at the pub - A Wednesday is no longer simply a Wednesday but ‘Wine Wednesday’, a weekly event where you get to enjoy your glass of wine with a free selection of cheeses and other nibbles. There is also a Pub Quiz taking place on a regular basis.
There’s plenty of ways you can get in touch with The Four Elms Inn:

Better still, why not visit the pub on Bough Beech Road, Four Elms, TN8 6NE. Peter and Lorraine look forward to welcoming you soon!

Just the mention of the word ‘Rugby’ puts a smile on my face. I remember watching matches almost every weekend with friends and playing for my local club at the time, London Welsh. I love the passion, the team spirit, and of course the wonderful social nature of the sport.
Committee members at Edenbridge RFC have been busy developing the club and have recently achieved accreditation as an official RFU (Rugby Football Union) recognised club. I met with Club Secretary Blair Clubley to learn more about all the exciting plans
at Edenbridge RFC and how the club is growing from strength to strength.
Blair and the Executive Committe is committed to making rugby more accessible to everyone in the community. He recently started an after school rugby club at Edenbridge Primary School for both boys and girls. Rugby is more than just a game, with great core values to be learned, as when playing any team sport: sportsmanship, team spirit, respect, and integration to name but a few, and of course the health benefits.
There are already a number of teams regularly playing at the club: 5 Senior Mens teams, 4 Youth teams, 6 Mini’s teams (from ages 7-12) and now a Girls Under 15s team. Blair is hoping to expand the Ladies section to incorporate a Senior team as well. Edenbridge RFC works closely with other local clubs and Tonbridge Juddians (who have a very strong Ladies section) have offered to coach a Senior Ladies team for Edenbridge which is great news.
This summer the club will be hosting Social Touch Rugby on Tuesday evenings and everyone is invited to take part (no experience necessary) so if you’ve never played before, this is a great way to learn the techniques and improve your ball skills without having to worry
about being tackled. And you’ll have lots of fun too!
As with any local club or organisation, funding plays a big role in securing it’s future and a number of activities are organised throughout the year to ensure the club has enough funds to keep going. These are open to
everyone and events include black tie dinners, family fun days and golf tournaments.
The next main event is on Sunday 11th May, the annual Mini’s Presentations. In the afternoon there will be demo matches, a bouncy castle and barbeque as well as the official presentation of the club’s RFU accreditation. The fun starts from 1pm at the Pavilion (home of Edenbridge RFC) in the recreation ground off Lingfield Road.
The first Sunday in September is annual season registration which includes an afternoon of matches, great barbeque food and an open bar for refreshments - it’s a great family day out so put the date in your diary and bring your friends! I took my brother along a couple of years ago and he had a wonderful time.
The Pavilion is also available for hire and makes for a great venue with space for 100 standing or 80 seated guests. The clubhouse comes with a fully licenced bar and kitchen. It is also available for daytime hire with playgroups and drama groups already enjoying the facilities.
You can find more information about the club, including membership, at www.pitchero.com/clubs/edenbridgerfc or contact Blair on 07881 800 058 or via email [email protected].

re The only vehicle rental company in Edenbridge
Saxons Self Drive Hire are a family owned rental company which started in 1998 in Biggin Hill with just two hire vehicles to their name. Saxons are part of Practical Car & Van Rental, the largest British vehicle rental franchise in the UK with over 170 rental locations and the 4th biggest vehicle rental company in the country.
The Saxons fleet now consists of 130 vehicles and there are offices in Bromley and Edenbridge as well as their head office in Biggin Hill. The Edenbridge office is located in the Wiles Centre on Commerce Way (TN8 6ED) where you’ll often see one of their branded vans parked outside.
The Edenbridge office is manned 6 days a week from 8.30am by Gary who has been with the company for many years. Rental vehicles can either be collected from their office or arrangements can be made to have the vehicle delivered direct to your door or outside of normal hours by arrangement.
Whatever your vehicle requirements, Saxons are sure to be able to provide you with something
to meet your needs. Their range of hire vehicles include:
Micro-cars 4x4s 7-seaters Minibuses Tippers
Vans (normal or with chillers) 7.5T trucks Motorhomes (2-6 berth) Wheelchair Access Vehicles (WAV) Campervans (new this year)
Automatic vehicles, diesel variants, child seats and satellite navigation systems are also available on request. You can either book your hire vehicle online using a sophisticated booking system which allocates vehicles in real time, or give the local office a call and organise everything over the phone.
All of their vehicles are able to be taken overseas. As long as the team know where you will be going and how long for, they will arrange the additional breakdown cover and insurance for your trip.
Rental periods for all vehicles can run from a single day to a four year hire contract. You can either choose to organise your own insurance for the hire vehicle or include this with your booking.
One way rentals are also an option as collection and drop-off from the same location is not always suitable for everyone.
To hire a standard vehicle you must be aged between 23 and 70 and have held your driving licence for at least 2 years. For minibuses, people carriers and 7.5T trucks there are other requirements.
All vehicles hired through Saxons Self Drive Hire come with 24-hour breakdown and recovery service to give you peace of mind.
The service is completely flexible and competitively priced and what’s more, they are the only car rental company in our local area!
To find out more or to book your next hire vehicle, visit the websites at:
www.saxonsselfdrive.co.ukwww.saxonsmotorhomes.co.uk
You’ll find the full range of hire vehicles with prices and availability. You can also contact the office direct on 01732 860 511 where one of the staff would be happy to help you.

Sustainable Edenbridge“The Sustainable Edenbridge group is looking forward to a busy year, helping people find out how they can make a difference to our impact on the natural environment, and also getting out and enjoying ourselves!
Our core focus is raising awareness of how small changes can help people live more sustainable lifestyles. You will be able to come and talk to us at the Eden Valley Festival, and we will also be setting up our stall at the Pig’s Ear Folk Ale at the Kentish Horse on Saturday 31st May, and at Bore Place Open Day in July. We’re also on Facebook at /sustainableedenbridge.
Sustainable Edenbridge is a friendly and lively group of people who care deeply about community and environment. We’re also planning some social outings this year, to Bore Place, the Bentley Weald Wood Fair and a day out in dynamic Brighton viewing various sustainable initiatives. Cake and ale may also sneak onto the agenda.
We welcome new members, regardless of how much or how little time you can spare, or what knowledge you have about sustainability – enthusiasm is what matters. There’s no membership fee, and we meet upstairs at the Old Eden on the second Thursday of each month – next meeting 10th April, 6.00 pm.
This month’s tip is about reducing the volume of stuff bound for landfill in your black dustbin-bag. If you have a compost bin for your organic waste, did you know you can empty your hoover into it, as long as the contents are mostly house dust and dirt? This will help reduce your rubbish.
Edenbridge Fairtrade Event a huge success!Edenbridge’s first ‘Come Dine With Us’ evening at the Eden Centre in Four Elms Road was one of a number of events during Fairtrade Fortnight. The event delivered a fantastic evening of foodie fun served up with a serious message designed to raise awareness of the wide variety of Fairtrade ingredients that can be incorporated into everyone’s daily cooking.
A hundred local people enjoyed live demonstrations by six local celebrity chefs, followed by a six-course taster menu of the dishes. The chefs involved were Mr Eafor Ali from Quality Tandoori Restaurant, Jo Banks from Jo’s Pampered Chef Party, Roger Bell from The Old Eden, Phil Diggins from the hft Ltd Oak Tree Bistro, Paolo Grenci from La Botte Restaurant & Wine Bar and Andy Lamar from A. A. Plumbing & Heating.
Andy explained: “As a local business we believe in fairness and honesty. We know how hard it is to run a business and earn a living and that is why we believe that it is important to use Fairtrade products as much as possible to give the grower or manufacturer a better profit margin and help them build a business, employ more people and provide a better quality of life for their families and communities.”
The event was organised by Rachel Ledwith, cafe coordinator at eAt@Eden. As well as raising awareness of Fairtrade, Come Dine With Us contributed more than £200 to the Edenbridge Fair Trade Group’s work. Rachel paid tribute not just to the chefs and the members of their staff who gave up their time but to sponsors including Sainsbury’s, The Eden Cenetre, Flourish Craft Bakery,
Vegware and the Grant Rule Trust and the army of helpers who made the event run smoothly.

project launched – have your say!
E d e n b r i d g e community has the chance to shape the way the area will develop and look over the next 16 years
through creating a Neighbourhood Plan.
The project was launched at the Annual Town Meeting in March and aims to produce really local planning policies to guide the development of the parish up to 2030. First step is to seek the views of local people on Edenbridge now, and what they want for the future. Thousands of leaflets are being distributed with those questions – what kind of homes, jobs and businesses, leisure, transport and environment would people like?
The aim is to have replies from all ages, children to pensioners, and from all parts of the community - shoppers, commuters, retailers, residents, and employers. The replies will highlight issues which may be covered by creating local planning policies.
These need to fit in with the layers of planning policy from national level downward, but this is a chance for local communities to influence their future, with policies which must be sustainable and deliverable, and supported by evidence of their need.
Edenbridge has been awarded £4,000 of the Government funding allocated through Locality to communities nationwide for preparing Neighbourhood Plans, and also has direct support from officers appointed from Planning Aid England.
A Steering Group of representatives from interested local organisations has formed to progress the project, including the Chamber of Commerce, housing associations, Kent Wildlife Trust, Sustainable Edenbridge and the Town Council. Sub-groups will be formed to work on specific topics, and anyone interested in helping with the project is invited to get in touch.
You can also ‘join’ the facebook page to be kept up-to-date on activities surrounding the project by liking the page www.facebook.com/EdenbridgeNeighbourhoodPlan

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costsAfter all the rain it really feels like summer is not too far away now – thank goodness! Mrs B u r t o n - L a w r e n c e has been keeping me busy these last couple of months,
making sure I go to as many events in the area as possible. I felt like an accessory at the Edenbridge & Westerham CAB Disco last month whilst Mrs B-L and my eldest daughter Katy gave it their all on the dance floor – I felt exhausted just watching them!
So, this is now the sixth feature page I have written as The Barrister Broker with my first one back in the March/April 2013 edition - my how time flies. Since that
first article I have been kept busy dealing with numerous enquiries, many of which have been by telephone which is nice as it’s more personal and gives the opportunity to talk things through as opposed to conversation by email! To my good fortune, many of these enquiries have developed into client work which is very rewarding and goes to show the valuable impact this magazine has upon its local audience.
For the benefit of new readers to this column, I should perhaps make it clear that I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. My business is all about helping people get genuine value for money and the best outcome they can when using legal services. I achieve this by arranging Barristers, the legal experts, to provide clients with specialist legal advice and/or representation before a Court. It’s a simple concept really, as with many things in life, going direct to the “expert” at the very beginning will save you time and money in the long term.
So, looking back over the last 12 months, it maybe useful to share with you the types of legal issues that I have been able to help people deal with
using the expertise of Barristers.
Divorce is one, also something I can personally relate to having been through one several years ago. It’s a tough time with lots of stress and uncertainty. If you and your spouse can agree on the fair division of the matrimonial assets (house, car, money, etc) without commencing Court proceedings this has to be the best solution. Word of caution here, if you do agree amongst yourselves, make sure you get an Order drawn up (a Barrister can draft this document) and approved by the Court to prevent your later to be ex-spouse coming back (maybe years later) to have a second bite at the cherry! If you do have to go through the Courts in order to obtain a Final Order, using the direct services of a Barrister from the outset will save you at least 50% overall if not more, than if you used a solicitor.
Other matters include Contact of children – often fathers wanting contact arrangements for their children or mothers contesting contact for whatever reason; cohabitees - non-married couples breaking up and wanting to take their share of the assets such as a property they bought together; business contractual disputes – drafting letters before claim or indeed suing someone over the breach of a contract; contesting the Will or estate of a deceased relative.
I think it is important to highlight that the Barrister who advises you on the law, gets to know you, helps you build your case and is also the person who represents you in Court if it goes that far. This means 100% consistency in your representation. No third party or other lawyer is brought in - your Barrister does all the work themselves. This is why going direct to a Barrister is so cost-effective compared to going to a solicitor. There is no overlap or duplication of work and as I have already mentioned, going direct to the expert at the very beginning will save you time and money in the long term.
It won’t cost you anything to speak to me but I could end up saving you thousands! Call me on 01732 866 562 or visit my website for more information at www.thebarristerbroker.com.
