Be more than just a tourist by Veronica Martin

It's cold, really cold outside. Whilst temperatures are slumping is the best time to think about something that keeps you warm. How about starting to plan your next holiday? But let's start from the beginning: What kind of tourist are you? There are two possible answers. 1. "The Tourist" - nothing to do with the film. Angelina and Depp probably had more action in 90 minutes than you will have in a week. The best definition for this kind of tourist is: The person who goes for a walk around the city looking for typical landmarks and restaurants recommended by a £2.99 tourist guidebook. You are "the Tourist" if you prefer to stay near the hotel and to have dinner in nearby restaurants with lots of other tourist instead of finding out new and interesting places. As a classical tourist you are happy with your guidebook and have a lack of interest in the real essence of the city.

2. Just a tourist? No, thanks. You are brave, smart and hungry for adventure. A £2.99 guidebook won't stop you from going beyond its recommendations. You want to immerse yourself into the culture and

become, for a few days, a new citizen. That's the best choice and a great chance to learn and enjoy your holiday and, who knows, you could even make some new friends! If you recognize yourself in this description I must recommend you a city where there is everything for everyone and it won't disappoint you: Barcelona! In this article I want to give you some advice and some useful tips:

First of all, avoid having lunch or dinner on Las Ramblas. Everything there has been thought for tourists so this means expensive and, believe me, nothing to do with real Spanish food.

Visit "El Raval". That's the first thing your guidebook would recommend you to avoid but actually it's a good neighbourhood to visit. Obviously, don't stay there on your own at three in the morning and get lost in an alley. The best time of the day to go is in the afternoon. A perfect plan could be to walk down the "Rambla del Raval" delighting a Kebab, there are lots of Arabic restaurants, and enjoying little Asiatic delicacies along the Rambla until you reach the sea. - The Jewish and Roman neighbourhoods are a must. Between the centre and the sea there are the Roman ruins and lots of antique shops in a labyrinth of streets which hide secrets of the past. But not everything is culture and gastronomy in Barcelona. As is well known, it is also a fun city and it offers a vast leisure for all kind of tastes. You could choose between posh parties on the north side of the city and alternatives ones, in the south. Believe me I do not recommend you to go out at Port Olimpic. It's a nice place to go for a walk by the seaside at Sunset, very romantic if you are in the right company, but the only Interesting thing you are going to find there, more likely than not, is the effects of the alcohol in the first kind of tourist, "The tourist". Obviously I can't give you as much advice as I would like to, so I suggest you to go to this site: www.barcelonaturisme.com where you will find how to move around the city and the best places to visit. I would also recommend, that once you are in Barcelona, get a copy of the "Time Out" magazine. Barcelona is the gateway to Europe. It's the most cosmopolitan city after London and, in addition to this, it’s cheaper! Who doesn't need to save some money nowadays? The well-known "Crisis" is probably coming to England after killing all signs of hope and expectations in Spain. So imagine the situation, it's easy to do: we need money in Spain, you need the cheapest holidays ever. Book your flight to Barcelona as soon as possible and spend lots of Euros - the currency exchange is £1 = €1.20 It's a bargain!

The moment of birth. Once the head and shoulders are through the rest of the lamb is

pushed out very quickly. At birth lambs are often born with mucus membranes covering their faces. The ewe will clear this by licking the newborn lamb. If the shepherd is nearby , he/she will assist by removing the membranes

and placing the lamb in front of the ewe.

Lambs are normally born with two front legs and head first, the ewe can normally give

birth without help but sometimes there can be some compunctions, then the ewe may need help.

The first sign of lambing comes when the ewe leaves the rest of the flock and finds a quiet location in which to lamb. Within an hour or so,

labour will start.

When the ewe is in labour she may stand and paw the ground searching for a lamb in

the hope that her efforts have been productive.

Licking will continue for some minutes and during this time the lamb will be gaining

strength and starting to think about milk! After the first lamb, the second quickly follows. Some breeds of sheep have only one lamb. In just fifteen minutes both lambs have

been born. After birth the ‘afterbirth’ will follow that contained the lambs within the womb. Part of this can be seen trailing from the rear of the ewe. Some-times the ewe will eat her own afterbirth.

The urge to suck is very strong in the new born lamb and within 20 minutes the lamb will be looking for milk. The shepherd may assist the lamb if it is struggling to find the ewe’s teat. The first

few days of milk contain ‘colcstrum’. This is a very think form of milk that is produced only at birth by the ewe. It contains many beneficial antibodies that help prevent the lamb from becoming ill. Some lambs are

not so lucky however. The ewe may reject the lamb or sometimes simply have

insufficient milk to feed it. Lambs in this situation become orphans and are looked after directly by the shepherd.

The whole Lambing experience is put on every year to

teach agriculture, countryside and animal care

student’s vital skills that they will be able to use in real

work settings. Based at Kingshill Farm this working

farm teaches students not only techniques and skills

but gives them practical and work placement practice.

When this article is being written we currently have 54

lambs born on site, but many more are on the way!

Trouble Maker

Hyuna and Hyonseong released their collaboration single „Trouble

Maker‟ on December 1st, 2011. The two released the R&B track in

which a catchy tune and interesting rhythm was introduced.

Although the single received massive popularity many would argue

it is for “the wrong reasons”. Much like Hyuna previous single, she

proved the lack of talent to produce a praise worthy performance

in the collab with little vocal and dance ability. Many said she used

her sexiness to gain attention which provoked the wrong kind of

attention. The Majority of the listeners all commented negatively

saying things like “This video is disturbingly sexist” and

“Hyunseung does 90% of the singing in this.” Although the negative outlook some supported the two

and though it was an excellent collaboration; “It‟s an awesome song”.

The Boys

All girls group Girls generation released their newest single

„The boys‟ on October 19th. The single turned out to be a

great success and their fandom was once again impressed

with the girls‟ brilliant comeback. The song consists of two

version; English and Korean; and has a memorable dance in

the music video. Listeners commented saying “they‟re sooo

talented and powerful” as well as “their English is great.

Stunning track”. The song shows that the girls are equally

talented in vocals and in dancing and the girls have earned

all the praise for this one.

We Need To Talk About Kevin

(DVD released 27/2/12)

Kevin is based on the sort of book your

mum reads and leaves lying around the

house hoping you'll pick it up because you're

a wonderful child and would never do any-

thing to hurt her; even if she didn't directly

ask you to read it she believed the subtle

hint would be enough to have you do so.

And so, being teenage, you rolled your eyes at her pathetic hints and went back to

Facebook.

Here's a horrible hint, though - sometimes our parents really do know what's best

for us. Your mother's reaction to the book will be completely explained by your own

reaction to the film, and even better, it's easily the best film of last year. Forget the

Oscars, with its worship of confusing plots where Sherlock joins forces with Sirius,

and it's inability to be even remotely important to our modern world; the fools who

hand out those stupid little status of naked-men-modelled-after-Ken wouldn't know

a decent film if it...well, if it was as obvious as Kevin is in its brilliance.

It's possible to be shocked by this film, even enthralled, while still believing you

know what's going to happen. Because it's simple, isn't it. Just like the book. It's

about a boy who commits a school shooting, and the 'joy' is in seeing the

psychological lead up and blah blah pass me Transformers.

But it's not that simple. Kevin will have you guessing right past the end, with such a

startling performance by the teenaged Ezra Miller (Kevin) that you'll start to fret

that you've yet to do anything with your life. Make a start at improving yourself now;

go buy this and offer to watch it with your mother, just to reassure her that she

didn't do too badly, after all.

War Horse (in cinemas now)

War Horse is more of an opera than a film, but don't let that put you off. Just like

American Idiot was a rock opera, War Horse is a cinematic opera, the type of film

which could be told as a mini-series but was put onto the big screen because

Steven Spielberg-only-produces-for-TV-and-War-Horse-is-his-baby.

Based on the book by Michael I-don't-recognise-the-name-but-I-have-read-one-of-his

-books Morpurgo, War Horse transfers from children's book to adult-inspiring movie

adaption very well. The phenomenal cast, mainly made up of unknowns and oh-isn't

-he-off-the-telly types, slide well into the scenery in a way which shows that Spiel-

berg learned that few people cared if Matt Damon died in World War Two.

War Horse is a story told in operatic movements, each with a different tone and

tempo, each perfectly isolated and yet and important figure in the entire tale. It's

quite literally a film you can take your nan to and she'll enjoy as much as you will,

and unless your nan's seen dancing on youtube, we're guessing this is a rare

occurrence. So take advantage of the opportunity to bond. Just don't see this with

your mates unless you fancy holding each other’s hands throughout a good cry.
