The education of deaf people in Greece has started too
late in comparison with others European countries. Thisdelay can be probably justified If we see the historical
conditions of Greece.
The disability is considered a social stigma and it caused
shame and guilt both to the person who brought it and hisfamily environment. The state machinery has focused on
the structure of general education and it was absent at
the start of Special Education (Pyrgiotakis, 1994). At the
beginning of the institutionalization of special education
we meet the private sector. Individuals establishinstitutions, organizations and associations with charitable
status, which designed to protect, care, education and
training of people with disabilities.

In September of 2007 we organized with the
department of the education for the deaf
children of the university of Patras a greek
conference with global participation in the
university of Patras with subject The deafpeople in greek reality. We have to mention
that for the first time a special school
organizes with the university a conference.
The method that is being used in the schools
for the deaf children in official hasnt beenset yet. We could say that in general is used
the oral language with signs. The majority of
parents dont want the GSL because there
are afraid that their children wont learn how
to speak. That is a reason why they dontdecide their children to be taught in the
special school. Moreover the label ofspecial
school is another disadvantage.
