QQIwasestablishedin2012andisanamalgamationofseveralpreviousStatebodiesincludingtheFurtherEducationandTrainingAwardsCouncil(FETAC).AlthoughFETAChasnotbeeninexistenceforsevenyearsnowyouwillfrequentlyhearpeoplerefertocoursesasFETACLevel5or6etc.TheyreallymeanQQILevel5or6,it’sthesamething.

Since2003theIrishNFQhaveestablishedaframeworkthroughwhichalllearningachievementsmaybemeasuredandrelatedtoeachotherinacoherentway.

MosteducationcoursesinIrelandareidentifiedasLevel1–10(seediagrambelow) Attheendofsecondaryschoolstudents(typicallyage18)completetheirLeavingCertificate(level5)

AnUndergraduateDegreeislevel7or8(andlasts3or4years) APostgraduate(Masters)Degreeislevel9(andlasts1or2years) ADoctorate(PhD)islevel10(andgenerallytakes3or4yearstocomplete) BetweentheLeavingCert(level5)andUndergraduateDegree(level8)therearemanycoursesatlevels5,6and7.ThesecanbeveryusefulparticularlyifEnglishisnotyourfirstlanguagebutyouhavepreviouseducationinaspecificarea.Theywillhelpyoutolearnthevocabularyofyourchosenstudyareabeforeprogressingtoadegree.Theseone-yearcourseswillalsohelpyoutointegrateandunderstandtheIrisheducationsystem.
