Dear Parents and Community Members Please find below some important new developments in relation to ISA and St Edward’s College. The Col-

lege was chosen, by ballot, to offer the BTEC Pilot qualification beginning next year for students in year 9.

This may be an option your child would like to think about. Mr Psaila will be presenting more information

about this .at the Year 8 Options Evening, the date of which will be announced shortly.

The ISA joins the National Vocational Education Pilot Scheme

The member schools of the ISA (The Independent Schools Association) are pleased to announce that they

are taking part in the National Vocational Education Pilot Scheme which will commence next scholastic

year. The two Independent Schools, drawn by ballot, that will host the two BTEC programmes are St Ed-

ward’s College, which will be holding classes in IT and San Anton School, which will host the Health and

Social Care Programme. San Andrea School, St Catherine’s School, St Martin’s College, and St Michael’s

Foundation will also be encouraging their students to take part in the project.

Year 11 and 13 Public Examination Preparation Courses

If there is enough interest, the College will be conducting intensive examination preparation sessions from

Sunday 17 April to Thursday 21 April inclusive. This time period falls in the first week of the holidays.

Costs will be determined by whether students elect to enrol in the day courses or the full live-in programme

which includes a 2-3 hour evening study period. If you are interested in your son/daughter attending, please

send me an email: [email protected] indicating day course or full live - in and I will send you more

information.

Public Speaking at its Best

As you are aware, Assma (Year 12) was

placed second in the recent ESU Public

Speaking Competition. More impor-

tantly, Assma has been selected to repre-

sent Malta (one of 2 students) in Eng-

land in May. The competition includes

students from many countries.

Congratulations, Assma.

St Edward’s student wins MALTA CHESS OPEN

On behalf of the College Community, I would like to congratulate Daniil who took the title of is the Malta

Open Chess Champion 2011. Daniil, who is only 13 years old, showed his intent from the early stages of

the competition when he defeated 3 players to reach round four, half a point ahead of the rest of the field

notwithstanding the fact that his rivals were much older and hence more experienced chess players. Daniil

kept up the pace and finished first with 6/7 points with five wins and two draws.

Professor Edward De Bono Addresses Junior School Staff and Year 12 Students We were once again very honoured to have Professor De Bono visit his former College. Professor De Bono gave a presentation on lateral thinking connecting real life solutions to real life prob-lems. I always find Professor De Bono’s addresses both fascinating and challenging. Thank you! Headmaster

Youth of the Year Award Jean Paul Fabri, the Youth of the Year 2010, is part of a team working on introducing a group of clown doctors for sick children at Mater Dei Hospital. There is a whole team behind the idea, in-cluding psychiatrists, psychologists, medical students and volun-teers, according to Mr Fabri, 27, from Attard. The framework for this project idea is being developed in preparation for the pilot study, which Mr Fabri hopes will start this year. Volunteers have been roped in and about 17 people are willing to impersonate the clown doctors, who will be given basic mime, theatre and improvisation training. Although the planning of the project is still in its initial stages, the general feedback from volun-teers and patients themselves has been positive. “We might have just sowed the idea but now there is a whole team behind it,” he said. The idea, the brainchild of Mr Fabri and Jean Pierre Busuttil, was born in Lourdes in June 2008. Mr Fabri was accompanying sick children on the Faith 150 pilgrimage to Lourdes, commemorating the 150th year of St Mary’s apparition there. He is vice president of the Assoċazzjoni Voluntarji Lourdes (AVL), which takes sick people to Lourdes every September. After that experience, AVL wanted to extend its voluntary work in Malta. “We can’t focus on Lourdes only. It has to be a starting point and then we’ll continue our work in Malta,” he said. The clown doctors could be the best way to start offering voluntary work with a difference, he added. The association will this year be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special pilgrimage called Trust. Two planes full of Maltese, accompanied by the Archbishop, will be going to Lourdes later this year. AVL will be focusing on a larger inclusion of youth volunteers and sick people who have never travelled. Mr Fabri has written a children’s book in Maltese and English about the rosary, the proceeds going towards transportation costs of sick children to Lourdes. “Once you’re in it, it’s hard to stop,” Mr Fabri said. His first experience in Lourdes was with a group of first year St Edward’s College sixth formers who went to the Joy 2000 pilgrimage. An economist by profession, Mr Fabri is a com-munications officer at the Prime Minister’s office, and also serves as part-time lecturer at the University of Malta. Yet, he still finds the energy to brighten up people’s lives. Apart from substantial doses of coffee, an appreciation of life gained through every pil-grimage is what keeps Mr Fabri going. Any voluntary work was a pit stop where one pondered on the es-sentials of life. In such a fast-paced society one even took the next day for granted. In Lourdes, you found yourself with people who went through so much and, yet, still appreciated the small things in life, he said.

“The special thing about such experiences is that yone for just four days, a pittance when compared tthat short period of time, someone will thank you added. “You do it for the sick person and his family but, something personal. You gain so much in giving texperience yourself to be able to carry on. “It’s the smile on the face, the small thankyous anthat the whole group creates which make this effois a bit of a dreamer and it’s the dreams that keep day,” Mr Fabri said, adding that when someone wsolidarity he would not find it hard to lend a helpimore with trying to find out the how rather than thof the Year trophy is awarded every year in honoua lawyer who was Kerygma Movement’s first pre

Look for the small things in life, Youth of the Year 2010 advises

Jean Paul Fabri from Attard recently won the Youth of the Year Award 2010 organised by the Kerygma Movement. The winner was announced by Kerygma Movement director general Fr Charles Fenech, and a trophy was presented to Mr Fabri by President George Abela after Mass celebrated at St Dominic’s church, Rabat. Mr Fabri is a graduate in economics, works in the Office of the Prime Minis-ter and is also a part-time lecturer at the University of Malta. He is the vice-president of the Lourdes Voluntary Association, which aims to take the sick to Lourdes, while organising activities to subsidise costs for those who cannot afford to pay. Mr Fabri has been ac-companying the sick to Lourdes every year for the past 11 years. He strives hard to raise awareness of this voluntary work and to get other young people interested in this experience. He wrote a children’s book both in Maltese and English about the rosary. The proceeds from the sale of this book go towards paying the transportation costs of the sick children to Lourdes. He is currently working with a group of volunteers which includes doctors and psychiatrists to try and introduce a group of ‘Clown Doctors’ for sick children at Mater Dei Hospital. The nine other finalists for the award were Anne Marie Agius from Sta Luċija, the late Damian Agius from Qormi, Anne Marie Borg from Attard, Brendan Buttigieg from Munxar, Vanessa Caruana from Msida, Anton D’Amato from Żurrieq, Maria Pellicano from Siġġiewi, Mario Sammut from Mġarr and Jonathan Zarb from Iklin.
