The process of changing a solid to liquid is called melting.

The change in the state of matter takes place at a certain temperature.

The temperature at which a solid changes and becomes liquid is it melting point.

As an example, the melting point for ice is 0 C. This means that at 0 C, the ice melts and becomes water.

When heated, solid particles absorb energy and vibrate faster.

The particles move further apart from each other.

The process of melting takes place, that means solid melts to form liquids.

Freezing...Freezing...

The process of changing a liquid to a solid is called freezing.

The temperature at which a liquid changes and becomes solid is called freezing point.

As an example, the freezing point for water is 0 C. This means that at 0 C, water freezes and becomes ice.

During the cooling process, energy is given out or released from liquid.

The particles move very slowly and group closer together and the process of freezing takes place.

Aim...To study the process of melting and freezing...

Statement of problem...How does the change of states of matter take place in the

Process of meling and freezing?

Hypothesis...Solids melt when heated while liquids freeze when cooled.

Variable that...a) is kept constant : quantity of wax.

b) is manipulated : heating or cooling.

c) respond : change in the state of matter by physical means.

Experiment...Experiment...

Page 14: The Effect of Heat on Matter (Melting&Freezing).Ppt2

Method...a) A test tube is held with a test holder.b) Some wax is added into test tube.c) The wax is heated with a bunsen burner.d) The observation is recorded.e) The apparatus is left to cool to room temperature.f) The observation is recorded again.

Observation...a) Solid wax changed to liquid form went heated.

Solid wax melted.b) Liquid wax changed to solid wax when cooled.

Liquid wax froze.

Analysis...a) The process of melting takes place when solid wax

changes to a liquid form.b) The process of freezing takes place when liquid

wax changes to a solid form.

Conclusion...a) Solid melt when heated while liquids

freez when cooled.b) The hypothesis accepted.

Discussion...a) Heat absorbed by solid wax enables

it to melt to form liquid wax.b) Heat released by liquid wax enables

it to freeze to fom solid wax.
