Abyarns: 50 years of Blowing Bubbles History & Folklore of the South Australian Western Zone Abalone Industry

The South Australian Western Zone Abalone fishery has been operating on the Eyre Peninsula coastline since the early 1960’s with the Industry Association being formed in November 1969. On the anniversary of 50 remarkable years, the Abalone Industry Association of South Australia (AIASA), saw it as an opportune time to capture, record and preserve the history of such a unique industry. A small volunteer committee, working with local author Eric Kotz, have written a gripping book which captures the adventurous spirit, perseverance and tenacity of industry pioneers who have made the abalone industry what it is today. Abyarns recalls stories of the early days, directly recorded from divers, shellers and their families, with fabulous photos showing how the industry has evolved into the vibrant international business it has become. There are stories of numerous near misses, strandings and stuff ups, finding the bonanza patches and the wild ride of forging an industry on a remote but bountiful stretch of coastline.
