The Elton Times Newsletter 52 — 30 April 2019

The Elton Times Newsletter No 52—30 April 2019

In recent issues of this newsletter we have communicated information about the dangers of social media and mobile phones, which provide a whole new level of challenges for schools, parents and students in so many different ways. One aspect of this was demonstrated during the recent Easter break when there was considerable media coverage about Shila Iqbal, an actress from 'Emmerdale', losing her job. She had only been in the programme since March but was sacked by the show's producers when some tweets came to light that she had sent five years ago, when she was nineteen years old. Miss Iqbal has protested that those tweets do not reflect the person that she is now, saying that there was "no malicious intent behind the tweets" and that it was "banter" between friends. However, the producers of Emmerdale were clear in making a stand on this matter, stating that "the programme took the decision not to renew her contract as soon as these posts were brought to her company's attention." As a school we are constantly reminding the students about the importance of making a positive impression in the way that they behave and conduct themselves, particularly when they continue to be seen as representatives of Elton High outside of normal school hours. The situation with the Emmerdale actress was a perfect example of a young adult having her dream job destroyed due to comments that had been made in the past. It showed how we now live in an age where comments and statements sent on social media can be stored and used in the future, sometimes for very negative reasons, and it means that young people need to think more carefully than ever before about how they communicate with others and about what they are saying. With the Easter break now behind us many Year 11 exams have already begun, with exams recently completed in Art, Graphics and Photography, moderation sessions taking place in PE and speaking exams being done in French and Spanish. The exam schedule accelerates over the next few weeks with the majority of GCSE written exams being scheduled from May 13th - only a few days from now. We are confident that the team of staff that we have at this school are a match for anywhere else and the intervention and revision being done across all subjects is extremely strong. We have really

pushed a number of revision strategies and materials to Year 11 students, including most recently the work done last week by the 'Elevate' group, who have delivered sessions to those students that received excellent feedback. However, all of this work within school has little overall effect unless the students are working at similar levels at home, with regular revision taking place on a daily basis. We appreciate the support offered by parents/carers in ensuring that Year 11 students are working effectively at home while also following necessary strategies to minimise stress levels prior to those exams. Further to this, during May and June more exams will be taking place for students in all other year groups - from Year 7 to Year 10 - and those students will follow procedures and expectations in the exact same format as GCSEs. As well as providing a useful indication about the different levels where students are currently working, these exams also give them a chance to get used to the exam 'experience' so that they are more thoroughly prepared for Year 11 and can approach their final exams with more confidence. As usual, further details about the exams for all other year groups will be outlined in future issues of this newsletter. In the meantime, please continue to contact me directly about any questions or concerns that may arise about your child's experiences here at Elton [email protected]

On Friday 29 March, a group of Year 10 and 11 students set off for a weekend trip to London. The aim to the visit was to learn more about the crimes of Jack the Ripper (for Crime and Punishment GCSE Unit) and also visit the Imperial War Museum. After an early start we arrived at the Imperial War Museum just after lunch time on the Friday. Here students could look at different weapons and artefacts ranging from WW1, WW2, the Cold War and recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was also an opportunity in the WW1 exhibition to dress up as wartime soldiers! We then headed east towards Whitechapel for our two-hour walking tour to some of the key locations from the grisly Jack the Ripper murders and gained an insight into what the East End of London must have been like at the time of the Ripper murders. The last stop after a long and busy day was Wildwood restaurant for dinner before we headed back to the Royal National Hotel to get some well deserved rest. After breakfast the next morning our last stop was to Madame Tussauds to see the incredible waxworks. Waxworks ranged from Hollywood, music, sports, politics and even Marvel characters! The students on the trip behaved impeccably from start to finish and were excellent representatives of Elton High School. They were a pleasure to take away on a trip and we hope that they also had a great time visiting London too!

GCSE London History Trip

Silver Awards—Easter Term Prior to the Easter break were the Silver Award ceremonies whereby students from all year groups received awards in subjects where they had achieved high standards over a period of time. Alongside the subject Awards were the tutor nominations for best planner, smartest uniform, outstanding contribution and student of the term. The entertainment during the Year 8 awards was a card shuffling trick performed by Miss Pickering and four volunteers. Miss Hepburn was partially impressed and wowed by the magic tricks that was later replicated in form time! Congratulations to all the winners!

Students from top universities came into school last week to work with Year 11 students and share their tips for exam success. The students, who work with Elevate Education, gave a series of lively presentations on ways for students to memorise information prior to exams, using research conducted among those who achieved top grades. Their suggestions included: using word substitutions (like rhyming

words) to remember tricky vocabulary using objects to create a visual story to

help remember sequences using “peg” words (such as 1 bun, 2 shoes,

3 tree) to help remember different information for a range of subjects.

The advice on studying also included recommendations to work alone, in a quiet and tidy place with no mobile phone. The students also suggested doing some brief exercise before sitting down to a short burst of intense study. Elevate students will return to school on Wednesday 8th May at 6pm to run a parental workshop on study skills ahead of our internal year 10 exams. All parents and carers of year 10 pupils are invited to attend.

Top Tips for

Studying

Tuesday 28th May: Spanish 9.30-12, Business 10-12 Wednesday 29th May: Science 10-12 (invited students

only) Thursday 30th May: History 10-12, Geography 12-3

(see lists for groupings) Friday 31st May: Maths 10-12 Saturday 1st June: English 10-12

In Geography this week…

Year 7 It has been fantastic to see Year 7s getting involved with

learning and researching into how palm oil is used in chocolate making also investigating the harm that it has on the environment and animals. The news report videos that

are being produced are extremely impressive!

Well done and keep up the creativeness.

Year 7 Cadbury’s Trip Shortly before the Easter break a large group of Year 7 students where able to go to the

Cadbury’s factory in Birmingham. Miss Windsor reported that the students were well behaved and a credit to the school, while they returned with plenty of free chocolate!

Callum said “it was interesting to be able to see how chocolate bars are created” and Harry thought the best part of the trip was “being able to write your name in chocolate”.

Fantastic day had by all!

Geography—Year 8 Miss Patel has been most impressed with the creativity and efforts of her Year 8 classes.

They have been tested with creating something unique, that is linked to either the hottest, wettest, or driest place on earth.

Special thanks to those who also shared their project with the class, such as the delicious cake made by Chloe Evans that 8W2 got to indulge in and certainly enjoyed!

Geography—Year 9 Before the Easter break Miss Windsor’s Year 9 class were able to erupt the

volcanoes that they had been building in their lessons. Looks like they had amazing fun despite the weather—Well done!

Geography Intervention Year 11 intervention is continuing following the recent Easter intervention sessions. Groups are the same as previously and the lists are below. Any clashes with other intervention, then please discuss with Miss Windsor.

Young Leaders—

Future Maths Teacher? When asked about future career aspirations, some students will mention their interest in becoming a teacher. This is always nice to hear as it suggests that they have seen something about the job that has appealed to them! On some occasions, a student will step up and express more than an interest. Jacob McDade in Year 9, has for several months now, been helping students on Friday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm, with areas of maths they have been struggling with. This willingness to get involved is admirable enough, but what is just as impressive is the impact he has had with these students. Jacob’s work in particular with one Year 10 student - helping them with algebra topics - has been a great success. As Jacob says, “I quite enjoy teaching maths, as it is a subject I’m comfortable with. By helping other people, I learn more about the common mistakes that students make, including myself! I have had to think of different ways of explaining something, like solving an equation, to help the students I have worked with understand.” If there are any students who are interested in following Jacob’s example and developing their leadership skills by doing an hour of maths tuition each week, please come and see me. If you are a student who feels that they could benefit from an informal style of student-led maths session to boost their confidence, drop me an email at [email protected].

The Elton High School calls out for votes to

bag a share of Tesco’s community fund The Elton High School are bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Elton is one of the groups on the shortlist.

Our project is titled ‘Elton’s Community Impact Project

Elton High School is building a new 3G all-weather pitch for our community and requests support with purchasing goals, bins, boot wipers and flagpoles. Please help support us!

Voting is open in the Ramsbottom Superstore (BL0 9AS) from 1 May 2019 until 30 June 2019 and customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already provided over £71 million to more than 23,000 projects across Britain. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help contributes funds to community projects up and down the country and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers voting in their local stores. We’re looking forward to seeing more projects brought to life.” Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places

that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Language-Link

The Elton High School The Elton High School will be inviting a number of Spanish boys and girls to attend classes again towards the end of the summer term. A number of host families are required to participate in this year’s Language-Link programme commencing from around the last week of June, 2019. Our Spanish students are looking for ‘buddies’ of their own age, who may share similar hobbies and interests and with whom they can stay and accompany to The Elton High School. Families would be paid to accommodate students for either three or occasionally four weeks. British students often get the opportunity to travel to Spain in the future should they wish. The programme can be great fun and is both enriching and educational for everyone who participates. Language-Link has proved to be extremely successful over the last few years, forging many student and family friendships. We are currently looking for a number of caring host families for Spanish boys and girls aged between 11 and 16. This is a fantastic opportunity for students who are studying Spanish as this programme would be very beneficial to their progress in the language. All the Spanish students are from lovely families in Madrid, Toledo and Valencia, attend reputable schools in Spain and are polite, educated and well mannered. Interested families are encouraged to contact me at the earliest for further information regarding the programme. This can be via e-mail on [email protected] or by telephone. Alternatively, families wishing to be considered can also complete the reply slip below. Please return this as soon as possible to Mrs Bardsley at the school, Head of Modern Foreign Languages.
