The Newcastle Division of Engineers Australia is one of
nine Divisions throughout Australia, administering and
representing the needs of its members.
The Division is the representative body for over 4000
members, covering northern NSW, north from the
Hawkesbury River to the Queensland border, and prides
itself on its regional focus.
The Division hosts meetings in Chemical, Civil/Structural,
Electrical, Heritage, Mechanical and Management
Engineering on a monthly basis. The Division also holds
technical sessions, site visits and social outings which are
aimed at giving members the opportunity to develop
professionally and to network with fellow engineers.
Young Engineers are well catered for and they have a full
program of activities which include:

From its inception in 2015, Newcastle Division has been working with Engineering Studies teachers to develop a program which will assist in delivering the curriculum to senior high school students.
In weeks 3 and 7 of each term, a seminar/workshop is held. Each one aligns to a
module in the current year 11 and 12 syllabus, providing current industry information
as well as practical application of aspects of engineering. Teachers take away with them
the presentation slides/handouts from each session which can then be used to deliver
the module in class.
These sessions provide teachers with CPD opportunities, tangible resources and are a
valuable link between our Engineering Studies teachers, industry and the Engineering
profession.

Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)and the National Engineering Register (NER)When you commence working as a professional engineer you will be entering yet another steep learning curve. In earlier days we might have referred to it as an apprenticeship - learning by doing. You will commence and continue to develop and demonstrate throughout your working life a range of competencies, both generic and specifi cally related to your practice as an engineer.
After some years, depending upon your abilities and experiences, you should be in a position to be able to satisfy Engineers Australia’s national Generic Competency Standards to become a Chartered Professional Engineer. Realistically, unless you have had extensive pre graduating experience, this will take you from three to fi ve years.
The status of Chartered Professional Engineer is the benchmark in Australia for the fully qualifi ed professional engineer, who is competent to practice independently in his or her fi eld of engineering and who has committed themselves to ethical practice and to continuing professional development.
You may also register on the National Engineering Register (NER), a national government sponsored, independently directed public register that is administered by Engineers Australia.
Being on the NER means that people from all over the world, be they clients, employers or others, will be able to verify your engineering credentials with confi dence by means of simply visiting the website www.nerb.org.au. Only engineers who have satisfi ed the competencies required of a Chartered Professional Engineer can be placed on this register.
