266 So Close…But Not Quite
1
For 25 years Hiroshima 1: Goat/Carp/Swallows fans have waited for their team to
reach the Japan Series – the climax to the professional baseball season. A club that
never signed free-agents and watched their best players be snapped up by bigger
and 2: richer/smaller/poorer rivals has led Carp fans to become a frustrated, if loyal
set of supporters. But finally this year, after so many dark years of
3: defeated/winning/losing campaigns the Carp reached the final series.
2
Sadly though, there was to be no fairy-tale end to the season and late on Staurday
October 29th, the 4: last/end/deadly pitch of the 2016 Japanese baseball season was
thrown from the mound in the Mazda Stadium. The Carp were 10-4 down and
losing 3-2 in the 7-Game series. There was to be no remarkable comeback, and when
the final batter was 5: bowled/caught/run-out it was the team from the very north of
Japan – Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters who won the game and became Japanese
champions.
3
Yet the Carp’s season of unexpected success joins other sporting teams that won in
2016 despite not being tipped as potential champions. The biggest sporting shock of
year remains the 6: shocking/unbelievable/amazed title success of Leicester City in
the English Premier League. At the start of the season in August 2015 – the club from
the Midlands of England were 5,000 – 1 to win the title. Yet, the club created one of
the most remarkable achievements in 7: English/British/World sport by winning the
league title by 10 points.
4 Other sporting shocks for the year included Portugal beating hosts France to win
Euro 2016 – the country’s first international 8: trophy/cup/win. In rugby union,
England travelled to Australia and whitewashed the Wallabies 3-0 for the first time
in the country’s 145-year history. Whilst in Major League Baseball, two clubs with
longest droughts in history – the Chicago Clubs and the Cleveland Indians face off
in the 9: American/World/Baseball Series.
5 Despite losing the Japan series Carp fans can still take solace that for once this
season had not ended a month earlier as most of the previous 25 had. The club did
sweep the Central League, winning the division by a massive 10: 17/217/7 games and
relegating two of the richest ball clubs in Japan – the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri
Giants to also-rans. And, for the first time since 1991 the Central League Champions
Pennant will fly over the 32,000-seat Hiroshima Stadium. There is always next year…
