Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, a word that literally means “manifestation” referring to Jesus’ appearance to the Wise Kings that came from the East. Today’s responsorial psalm at Mass proclaims, “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you!” With these words we are reminded that today’s feast doesn’t just celebrate the arrival of the Magi and Jesus’ appearance to them but now the coming of “all nations” to adore the newborn King of the Jews.
Many traditions surround this day and this day is often referred to as “Little Christmas”. Many cultures even exchange their Christmas gifts today (rather than on Christmas Day) to reflect the gifts of the Kings to Jesus. Personally, I always save a few presents to open on this day to keep the “season of Christmas” alive. Certainly, it is a beautiful feast that not only recalls Jesus’ manifestation of Himself to the world but our own obligation to manifest him to others in the world by our faith-filled lives.
Here we are beginning another New Year. I pray that in a special way, you and your loved ones will be abundantly blessed in the coming year of 2019. A New Year brings with it many mixed emotions. Yet, it also brings the promise of a new beginning. I don’t know if you have made any resolutions this year but if you have, please try to make a spiritual one in addition to the other usual ones that we make. Some people carve out a little more time each day to talk to God or go to confession more frequently or even try to make more frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament. Whatever you do, I pray your love for the Lord will grow even more this coming year and that love will enrich the lives of those around you. Just as an update on our parish Annual Appeal, to this date we have received $65,350. I thank you for your generosity & I wish you all again a very Happy New Year!
Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
