    The Epiphany of the Lord

    NEXT SUNDAY 10AM

    Sacred Heart

The moment you suddenly understand, when everything ‘clicks into place’, when the penny finally drops, that is an epiphany.

We celebrate the Epiphany of all epiphanies today, however!

Today we celebrate the moment when God ‘fell into place’ for us; we celebrate the moment it suddenly dawned on humanity who it was lying in the Manger.

God is now accessible. Anyone can now find Him, as long as they look for Him - it’s not magic!

We have to make the effort, just as Casper, Melchior and Balthazar (the three Wise Men) did if we want to find the Lord… We have to follow the signs and do as we are instructed….. Then we shall find Him, we shall bow down and Adore Him!

  • Year C

Confiteor I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. . Gloria in excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you; we bless you; we adore you, we glorify you; we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Entrance antiphon: Behold the Lord, the Mighty One has come and kingship is in His grasp and power and dominion.

First Reading Isaiah 60: 1-6 Arise, shine out, Jerusalem, for your light has come, the glory of the Lord is rising on you, though night still covers the earth and darkness the peoples. Above you the Lord now rises and above you his glory appears. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. Lift up your eyes and look round: all are assembling and coming towards you, your sons from far away and your daughters being tenderly carried. At this sight you will grow radiant, your heart throbbing and full; since the riches of the sea will flow to you, the wealth of the nations come to you; camels in throngs will cover you, and dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; everyone in Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm: All nations shall fall prostrate before you O Lord. Second Reading Ephesians 3:2 -3,5-6 You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel. The Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! We saw his star as it rose and have come to do the Lord homage. Alleluia!

  • The Gospel Matthew 2: 1-12 After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. ‘Where is the infant king of the Jews?’ they asked. ‘We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.’ When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born. ‘At Bethlehem in Judaea,’ they told him ‘for this is what the prophet wrote: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you will come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel.’ Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared, and sent them on to Bethlehem. ‘Go and find out all about the child,’ he said ‘and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.’ Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward, and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way. Credo I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. AMEN

This small increase will make a huge difference to the parish. Are you new to the parish? ………......................….…. If so, welcome! Please do introduce yourself to one of the priests. There is a registration form for you to complete in the porch of the church. Choir practice ………………………......................….…. We are hoping to establish a regular time for choir practice. Initially, the choir will meet every fortnight after the 7pm Mass at Sacred Heart. This practice is open to all of those involved in music across the whole parish and to anyone interested in joining in! Fr John will occasionally give some input and advice around the major liturgical celebrations, so it is also a chance to learn more about music in liturgy. The first practice will be on Tuesday 4th February. Sunday School ………………………......................….…. Our Parish Sunday school runs fortnightly from 10am at Sacred Heart. This is the opportunity for your child / children to explore our Catholic Faith in a way that is appropriate for their age. Please do make every effort to bring them to along. • Catechism The Penny

During the course of the year, we shall gently make our way through the ‘Penny Catechism’. The Penny Catechism was given its name because of its original cost of one penny. While the price has changed, The Faith has not! This handy catechism gives 307 questions and answers on all aspects of the Catholic Faith. Having been approved by the Archbishops and Bishops of England and Wales for use in their dioceses, it is an official catechism of the Catholic Church. Topics covered include: God, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, the Precepts of the Church, grace, virtue, sins and what all this means for us and our eternal end.

    1. Who made you? God made me.

    2. Why did God make you?

God made me to know him, love him and serve him in this world, and to be happy with him for ever in the next.

    3. To whose image and likeness did God make you? God made me to his own image and likeness.

    4. Is this likeness to God in your body, or in your soul?

This likeness to God is chiefly in my soul.

    5. How is your soul like to God?

My soul is like to God because it is a spirit, and is immortal.

    6. What do you mean when you say that your soul is immortal?

When I say my soul is immortal, I mean that my soul can never die.

    7. Of which must you take more care, of your body or of your soul?

I must take more care of my soul; for Christ has said, 'What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and suffers the loss of his own soul?' (Matt. 16:26)

    8. What must you do to save your soul? To save my soul I must worship God by Faith, Hope and Charity; that is, I must believe in him, I must hope in him, and I must love him with my whole heart.

    9. What is faith?

Faith is a supernatural gift of God, which enables us to believe without doubting whatever God has revealed.

    10. Why must you believe whatever God has revealed? I must believe whatever God has revealed because God is the very truth, and can neither deceive nor be deceived.

    11. How are you to know what God has revealed? I am to know what God has revealed by the testimony, teaching, and authority of the Catholic Church.

    12. Who gave the Catholic Church divine authority to teach?

Jesus Christ gave the Catholic Church divine authority to teach, when he said, 'Go therefore, make disciples of all the nations'. (Matt. 28:19)

  • Today, on the Feast of the Epiphany we celebrate two things: (i) God’s Revelation and (ii) God’s generosity.

    Revelation:

Today, the identity, mission and purpose of the Christ Child is revealed to us in the three gifts offered to the New-born King:

    Gold: for a King

    Incense: for God

    Myrrh: for a foretold death

The Three Wise Men became prophets for us on this day, revealing that the child lying in the manger is God made man and is destined for the Cross.

Casper, Melchior and Balthazar (The Three Wise Men) knew why the Messiah would come, they knew how to find Him and they knew what to bring to Him when He entered the world.

Have you ever noticed how the Infant Christ is already lying in the shape of the Cross, accepting the Mission and the Death foretold in the gifts of Casper, Melchior and Balthazar …

The second thing we celebrate today is the generosity of God, the ways in which He has been reaching out to us for thousands of years….. Today, we celebrate the opening-up of salvation to all the nations….

  • Out of His generous love, God created the World, all that it contains and us! Everything was good, ordered and unified. Until Adam and Eve committed the First Sin and damaged creation for ever.

That First (or Original) Sin damaged the whole of Creation but most importantly it damaged our relationship with God.

Adam and Eve ran and hid from God.

Ever since that time God has been reaching out to humanity, calling us back to Him…. He made different promises with different people throughout time…

God continued to call us back, He was faithful to all of His promises to us. But we were not always faithful to Him.

In time, we started to worship ‘false gods’… we invented our own idols and worshiped them.

To be included in God’s promises you had to be born into His people…. Until today! The Three Wise Men were not born into the People of God and yet they knew Him, they brought Him gifts (gifts that explained who the child was). Today, for the first time ‘outsiders’ were able to find their way into the People of God, that’s what Jesus came to do, to open Himself up, even to the pagans! So that all who accept Him may be included in His promises to us.
