St. Peter by-the-Lake Episcopal Church

Welcomes you

Cordial Welcome:

We welcome all who worship today at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake.

Visitors are asked to sign the guest register in the Narthex. Everyone is invited to the

Parish Hall for food and fellowship immediately following the service.

Communion:

Visitors accustomed to receiving Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to

do so at St. Peter’s. Also, if one is unable to come to the altar rail, contact an Usher prior

to the service and communion will be brought to you.

Worship:

Worship in our Episcopal Church community should be characterized by a combination

of both tolerance and respect for others. If during worship you need to exit the nave

(sanctuary) or return, please consider the appropriate times to return during the liturgy:

times of congregational singing (hymns) or speaking (the creed); or at the peace. Please

try to refrain from leaving or entering during times of prayer/confession and during the

sermon. Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you.

Children:

Worship in our Episcopal Church Community should be characterized by a combination

of both tolerance and respect for others. Children are always welcome in worship, but if

your child should become 'inconsolable', please consider quietly moving into the Narthex

or Fotinos Hall until your little one 'settles down'. Remember that we have a fully staffed

nursery (infants – 2 yrs.) downstairs for your convenience.

Want to know more?

Please speak to a greeter or a member of the clergy to get more information. You can

also visit us online at our parish website, www.saintpeterbythelake.net, and find us on

Facebook and Twitter.

THE FIRST READING: Daniel 7:1-3,15-18 Reader: In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of

his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my

vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great

beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.

As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head

terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning

all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter:

"As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy

ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for

ever—for ever and ever."

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:11-23

Reader: In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined

according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according

to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on

Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you

had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had

believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit;

this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own

people, to the praise of his glory.

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the

saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I

remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus

Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and

revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart

enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you,

what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and

what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe,

according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work

in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right

hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power

and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age

but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and

has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body,

the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN I sing a song of the saints of God Hymnal 293

Please stand. (Children ages 3 years – 3rd grade dismissed to Children’s Chapel.)

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

7

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 6:20-31 Gospeller: Jesus looked up at his disciples and said:

"Blessed are you who are poor,

for yours is the kingdom of God.

"Blessed are you who are hungry now,

for you will be filled.

"Blessed are you who weep now,

for you will laugh.

"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you,

revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that

day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is

what their ancestors did to the prophets.

"But woe to you who are rich,

for you have received your consolation.

"Woe to you who are full now,

for you will be hungry.

"Woe to you who are laughing now,

for you will mourn and weep.

"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors

did to the false prophets

"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who

hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If

anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone

who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to

everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do

not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you."

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor ~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

8

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FORM III 387

The Leader and People pray responsively

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;

That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;

That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

9

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest;

Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Silence

The People may add their own petitions

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION 360

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Leader and People:

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins

through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all

goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in

eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

All stand

Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

10

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

HYMN Doxology Dix

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below,

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer B) 367

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere

to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and

Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever

sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love

which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling

of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the

prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from

the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy

to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error

into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took

11

bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and

gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body,

which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given

thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:

This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you

and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink

it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant

and People: We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord

of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts

that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of

the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be

acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the

fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and

bring us to that heavenly country where, with [__________ and] all your

saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of

the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and

in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,

Almighty Father, now and for ever.

People: AMEN.(Danish 3-fold)

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ

Christ has taught us, has taught us,

we are bold to say, we now pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER 364

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

12

Lift up our eyes and see His face,

And His grace forever.

May the Lord, Mighty Lord

Bless and keep us forever

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Weekly prayers

Today we are thankful for and we pray for All Saints [Gastonia] and All Saints [Kharagpur]. We also pray for local area church, Fairfield United Methodist; and we pray our Youth and Youth Leaders, EYC. We pray for those who are Emergency Responders, and those who serve in Law enforcement, especially: Bart Arnold, Ross Bulla, Melvin Mathias, Chris Moody, Bailey Parton, David Plyler, and Ellen Schmieder as we continue to pray for world peace.

A Word From the Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

All Saints Sunday – “A Great Cloud of Witnesses” I’m especially fond of All Saints’, perhaps because I grew up a protestant’s Protestant and am overcompensating. In any case, I like the idea of remembering and holding up as examples that “great cloud of witnesses” with whom we are in fellowship and who, with us, constitute the Church. My variety of Protestantism was strongly individualistic; there was very little emphasis on community, much less any such notion as the “communion of saints”. And we really actually didn’t believe in saints – very egalitarian was my brand of Christianity. The older I get, and the more I’m exposed to catholic Christianity, the more I appreciate what I lacked in my upbringing. “No man is an island,” Donne tells us, “entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less…”This is a good thing to be reminded of in this age which glorifies the individual to the detriment of the group and at the expense of society. We have sacrificed our sense of community on the altar of ‘rugged individualism,’ and we are much poorer for it. The Church, by its very name and nature, reminds us of the folly of this – especially on All Saints’ Sunday. (Sue Armentrout – Synthesis) Faithfully, Father Ron

† OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Christmas starts early this year! Operation Christmas Child reaches all around the world. Let's

pack boxes now! I want to Challenge each parish family to fill two boxes per month, September

through November. I have over 100 boxes available now, to fill , AND would be more than happy

to order more. Two years ago we filled 129 and sent them to needy children everywhere. I would

love to set a goal of 200 this season. I KNOW we can do it! OCC boxes will be located on top of the

mailboxes for you to grab when you are at church. Filler suggestions & box labels will be available

also. Remember: do not include liquids, perishable items, chocolate, war related toys, etc. Great

ideas are: school supplies, hygiene items, small toys and stuffed animals, cards, individually

wrapped hard candy, notepads, socks, wash cloths, etc.

Make that commitment to give these children a needed gift. Thanks for all you help! Cyndi Jarvis

† ADVENT 2016 We are starting preparations to publish the 16th annual St. Peter Advent Devotional and we

would really like to have a devotion written by you and/or your children to include in devotional.

What makes this devotional so special is the fact fellow members write personal devotionals about;

- Special “God Moments”

- Favorite scriptures

- Family Christmas traditions

- Memorable past Christmases

- What Advent/Christmas means to them

- Favorite stories/poems written by their family (for example, their

Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers etc).

It is very special to participate in daily devotions during Advent and have the inspirational

experience to enjoy a few words from fellow St Peter’s members.

So please take a few moments and write a devotional…… it does not have to be long or a “Biblical

Epistle”……just from you! Also, help your children compose one too!

Advent is only a few weeks from now….. Please complete and submit before November 17th. If

you have any questions, please call us, (704-483-1684), (704) 663-9004 (cell). Bud & Jeanne

Hawkins

P.S. Please place devotion in our Church mailbox, or transmit via E-mail, “word” format

([email protected])….. Thanks, in advance, for your support!!.

† Advent Festival Needs. Please consider which of the following items that you might have to share

for our crafts and other activities during the Festival of the Nativity this year on December 4th. If

† WIDEN THE WALLS Check Out the Changes

First was some planning and then Discernment and next is Feasibility. Right now your Widen the

Walls Steering Committee is doing the groundwork for a Feasibility Study which will roll out in

January. Part of that preparation is all of us looking at the building plan changes that arose from

the discernment discussions.

There’s three more Sundays to check out the Widen the Walls display that shows the changes

generated from those discussions. Your input was exciting!!! We think you’ll like the changes!!

Be sure to stop in Fotinos Hall after the 8:30 service or Furr Hall after the 10:30 service each of the

next two Sundays (October 30 and November 6). A representative from the Widen the Walls

leadership team will be there to answer your questions and give you a handout of the updated

floor plans and costs.

Please visit our display, study the handouts, and visit the website. Knowing more about the

proposed building will help us respond to the January Feasibility Study.

If you have questions, please see us at the display or call Sherree Brady at 704 340 7814.

† NEW ADULT FORMATION BEGINS

Fall session: November 6th – December 18th. Join us for either 101 Reasons to be Episcopalian (Fr.

Ron’s office) or Not a Silent Night (Furr Hall) from 9:30 – 10:15am.

† ALTAR FLOWER CALENDAR – THE YEAR 2017! The Altar Flower Calendar is posted in the Narthex! Everyone is welcome to sign up to give

flowers for thanksgivings, celebrations, or memorials. During Lent and Advent only greenery is

used on the altar and we need sign-ups for those dates also. Please print your first initial and last

name clearly. Let’s fill our 2017 Calendar quickly! More detailed information about giving flowers

& greenery for our Altar is in the Nov NET.

† Angel Gift Outreach for East Lincoln Christian Ministry! We invite you to participate in our annual gift giving opportunity to help the less fortunate in East

Lincoln. About 1200 ANGEL TAGS with gift wishes on them are out in the community at this time.

We have some of these wishes hung in Fotinos Hall. Please choose a tag (or 2!), write your name &

phone number beside the appropriate gift wish on the sheet, purchase that gift ($20-25), and bring

back your unwrapped gift by Sunday, Nov 27th. Full details are on the back of each angel tag.

If you’re short on time or don’t like to shop, consider picking up one of the tags for ELCM’s Home

Meal program and give $25 for this great need for the elderly and homebound in our area.

Your generosity could bring Christmas joy and hope to someone who may not have much of that

in their life right now.

The Mission-Outreach Team thanks you for supporting this East Lincoln Christian Ministry

program.
