Birth Date: May 20, 1957 Birth Place: Hollywood, California Seminary: St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo, California Ordination: June 8, 1991 Diocese: Archdiocese of Los Angeles

Bishop-elect Marc Vincent Trudeau grew up in Burbank, CA and worked at Vons grocery store for more than a decade to put himself through school. This fraternal twin has an amazing work ethic. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California. After completing his undergraduate degree, he went on to USC’s School of Dentistry.

It was during the last part of dental school when he felt he was being called to something else. He began studies at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo in 1986 and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on June 8, 1991.

For the first four years of his priesthood, he served as Parochial Vicar at St. James the Less parish in La Crescenta. In 1995, he moved to St. Philip the Apostle where he served for six years, one of those as administrator. In 2001, he was named pastor of St. Pius X parish in Santa Fe Springs. Cardinal Roger Mahony invited Bishop-elect Marc to serve as his priest secretary from 2004 until 2010.

It was during this time (2008) that the Bishop-elect was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent chemo and radiation therapy for three years before he became cancer free. Having cancer 10 years ago gave him “a different view of life. The little things are not so important anymore. I appreciate the things that are important, and I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore.”

In 2010, he became the pastor of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque parish in Lomita where he served parishioners until 2013. It was then that Archbishop José H. Gomez named Bishop-elect Trudeau as Vice-Rector and Assistant Director of Pastoral Formation at St. John Seminary in Camarillo. A year later, he became the seminary’s Rector.

“Born and raised in L.A. I feel blessed to have been able to minister in my home. This local community of faith reflects our universal Catholic Church in its beautiful diversity and the conviction to serve the needs of their sisters and brothers,” Bishop-elect said shortly after the announcement of his elevation.

He also said that, for him, the best part of being a priest is Sundays. “We tell the guys here at the seminary that you can’t just rest on Sundays, it’s a day of evangelizing, preaching, visiting, being present to the people. That’s the day that they’re able to come, so you have to be present to them.”

On the day of the announcement from Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop José H. Gomez, at the press conference noted, “I know he is going to be, as Pope Francis likes to say, ‘a shepherd who knows the smell of his sheep.’” Archbishop continued to say, “He has dedicated his priestly ministry in service of the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Born and raised in L.A. he has a zeal for service in our diverse and vibrant communities; sharing God’s loving mercy with those most in need. I believe that his dedication to his priestly ministry and to serving others, along with his pastoral approach will help us in our mission to share the love of God and the message of Jesus Christ of peace, justice and mercy for all peoples.”

COAT OF ARMS ESCUDO DE ARMAS

BLAZON ▪ BLASÓN

The Most Reverend Marc Vincent Trudeau has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles with the titular see of TINISA IN PROCONSULARI being assigned to him. He is to be consecrated a bishop of the Church on 7 June 2018, a day set aside on the Christian Calendar to honor many ancient saints of the church: Saint Paul, Bishop of Constantinople, Saint Colman of County Down (N. Ireland), Saint Meriadec of Brittany, Saint Willibald of Germany, Saint Robert of Yorkshire, and Saint Anthony Gianelli of Italy to name only a few.

Symbolism

Bishop Trudeau wished a coat of arms design that not only continued the theme that he has embraced for his personal motto: put out into deep water... but also to pay homage to certain secular entities as well. The main theme of the new bishop’s coat of arms comes from the passage from Luke 5:1-11 calling the Apostles to become fishers of men.

Page 11: The Episcopal Ordination - olacathedral.org · The symbol of the fish, known as ICTHUS, was known in the early church as the ‘Jesus Fish’ and so for Christians the fish and the

11

The heraldic device known as a barry wavy was employed as in heraldry these alternating blue and white wavy lines represent deep or rolling water. These wavy lines suggest several things for the bishop ~ a geographical tribute to the Pacific Ocean which forms a border of the archdiocese and which has been important to the new bishop since his youth (and thusly a tribute to the territory that forms the Los Angeles Archdiocese and California, his life-long home, as well); the scriptural passage of Christ calling the Apostles to put out into deep water, and the waters of baptism or the Rite of Christian Initiation, as well.

Upon this field representing water are found three fishes in the traditional heraldic patterning but for this coat of arms design a change was intentionally made. The designer replaced the traditional heraldic fish with three Fish of Saint Peter, the tilapia, found in the Sea of Galilee to this day.

In heraldry the number ‘three’ assures the concept of ‘many’ which was necessary to depict this scriptural passage properly. But three also ideally pays homage to the Blessed Trinity in a very subtle way. The fish is also the first universal symbol for Christian believers; it even predates the use of the Cross and Crucifix. The symbol of the fish, known as ICTHUS, was known in the early church as the ‘Jesus Fish’ and so for Christians the fish and the sea have deep early Christological symbolism.

Entwined around the three fish in this design is a rope with a single knot. The rope represents Christ’s call to the Apostles to go out and become fishers of men. The single knot represents Jesus Who called the Apostles to this vocation. Originally the rope was to be rendered as blue to represent the very depths of the sea, its deepest part, but the bishop had a whimsical addition that mandated a change. He, being a loyal Trojan of USC, very much wanted to see red and gold, the school colors, together somewhere within his coat of arms. And so the designer switched out the blue on the rope for red so that the color red rests upon the gold of the fish thus including a very subtle homage in this design to USC as well.

At times a coat of arms design may have an additional bar across the top of the shield. This is not always the case but when it appears it takes the name of a chief and it becomes the place of highest honor. It is a hallmark of this heraldic designer to pay special homage whenever possible to the title of the cathedral where a new bishop is to be consecrated. This, of course, is not always possible but when it is this homage becomes a special mark that the bishop will bear for the remainder of his life, his coat of arms always reminding him of the place where he was elevated to the office of bishop. This was the case when the Holy Father provided Archbishop Gomez with three new auxiliary bishops in 2015: Bishops Barron, Brennan, and O’Connell, and so it is repeated today for Bishop Trudeau in what the designer has called the Our Lady of the Angels charge.

Each of these emblems was unique, no two the same, but each would be similar and with the same symbolic meaning, as to proudly mark each prelate as being bishops ordained in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, in the Archdiocese dedicated to the same title, and in a city originally known by that same name. And so it will be on 7 June 2018 for Bishop Trudeau.

12

The charge (emblem) for each is a combination of the Fleur de Lys for the B.V.M. and a pair of angel’s wings on a blue chief; blue being the color reserved for Our Lady and also the color of the Pacific Ocean that forms one of the borders of the church of Los Angeles.

Surmounting the episcopal shield is the deep green pilgrim’s hat, the heraldic emblem for all prelates and priests of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. For the rank of bishop, both residential and titular, the pilgrim’s hat is always worked in deep green. For this rank and office there are six tassels suspended on either side of the hat in a pyramidal style. The interior of the hat is worked in scarlet to represent the martyrdom, real or symbolic, which all bishops, not only cardinals, are called to at the time of consecration to the episcopal dignity. The hat is properly known in the Church as the galero and the tassels take the name fiocchi. These, too, are worked in green for the rank of bishop.

For bishops, a cross with a single cross-arm, rises above and behind the shield. It is known in heraldry as the episcopal cross. In this coat of arms design homage falls to Bishop Trudeau’s heritage – the Cross Fleurity has been chosen to repeat the Fleur de Lys which is also the emblem for those of French heritage. Likewise, the Fleur de Lys repeats honor to the Blessed Virgin.

The stone at center is a blood red ruby which in Catholic heraldry is symbolic of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Beneath the shield, just as it would appear if worn at the neck of an actual honoree, is the insignia of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a papal order of knighthood awarded to the bishop by the Holy Father.

Motto

In heraldry, a motto has been both a personal philosophy of life and a family dictum, and sometimes even a cry for battle. But in Church heraldry, a prelate’s personal motto has always been intended to represent his personal spirituality and theologically based philosophy of life and is most frequently grounded in Sacred Scripture and spiritual reflection.

Bishop Trudeau has selected « PUT OUT INTO DEEP WATER » for his motto, words of profound importance to him which comes into the Church from Saint Luke’s Gospel (5:4-5): “Jesus said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’”

The bishop’s entire coat of arms is grounded in this particular spiritual dictum and so it is most appropriate that the motto that he has chosen likewise forms the theme for his overall coat of arms design. And so, with this motto as his guide, Bishop Trudeau undertakes his new episcopal ministry for the Church in Los Angeles. May God be praised… © 2018 The Most Reverend Marc V. Peter proceeded to speak and said: “You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”
