sometimes, if I like them) to avoid this obligation. As Christians, we are to give generously and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7) of our God given resources (money, time, talent). Our gifts assist those who are hurting financially,

psychologically, or spiritually. Isn’t this Epworth’s mission? It is clearly part of our personal Christian responsibility.

Note the programs and services our Epworth offers to members and the community at large. Review the Tower’s list of meetings, events, and programs in this issue. Wow!!

Your giving is the only way Epworth can support these activities. Without your generous and cheerful giving, we fall short of Jesus’ commandant, and we deny our faith.

This year, commit to Living Generously and giving generously. Believe me, the four months of “asking for money” will transform into months of joyful participation in doing your part as our brothers’ keepers.

Jerry Smolen

Epworth United Methodist Church’s 2013 Stewardship Campaign

The theme for this year’s Stewardship Campaign is “Living Generously.” It is an appropriate title because the members of Epworth have continuously stepped up to the plate and given of their time, talents, and resources, whenever the need has arisen.

We have a wonderful program implemented by a thoughtful and caring staff to show for our generosity. As we have been truly blessed, so should be spread that blessing to others through Christian education, outreach, and ministry.

Every man, woman, and child member has a role to play in this campaign. It isn’t just a matter of raising money to meet the budget; it’s taking on the personal responsibility to see that we not only reach but exceed it.

By “Living Generously,” we can expand the Church’s programs, its outreach, and its ministry of service to others.

For the next five Sundays, ending with Commitment Sunday on November 10, you will hear stories of how living generously can enhance your life, the Church’s life, and the lives of all those around you.

Like our individual families, only on a much larger scale, Epworth has to be able to manage its finances, and it requires a budget to do so.

Prayerfully consider how you can help Epworth, as the “hands and feet” of Christ, reach its budgetary goals for the coming fiscal year.

What Epworth Means to Me

Epworth has been a wonderful Methodist home to raise our family, build strong friendships, celebrate the baptisms of our children and friends’ children, applaud the weddings of loved ones, gather together to honor the departed dear to us, participate in Sunday School, enjoy the church Bazaar, reunite at the Mother/Daughter Banquets, learn the Bible stories, understand the Scriptures, as well as, participate in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus.

Our Epworth family allows for a fullness, a renewal, and an abundance of life. It is a place where we can give and receive, laugh and cry, rejoice and express sorrow, heal and grow. Epworth is our Hearth where all that has meaning takes place and enables the tabernacle within each of us to flourish.

My husband, Pete, has shown me that yearly giving is a big part of the spiritual process that enables us to become more than we could have imagined if we tried to do all things on our own. A big part of life’s success is letting go and trusting God’s Grace to magnify and glorify.

Hope you enjoy this season of giving.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Shawaker

Friends in Faith and Living GenerouslyBeginning Sunday, October 6, Friends in Faith will be focusing on the “Living Generously” curriculum each Sunday through November 10. Friends in Faith meets in Room 213 at 9:45 AM.

Anyone may join this session to spend some more time thinking about what “Living Generously” means in daily living.

Why Should You KnowYour Spiritual Gifts?

Morning and Evening Classes Available

You are gifted! The Holy Spirit gives to every believer special gifts for the purpose of sharing God’s love and meeting the needs of God’s people. How does it help you to know what yours are? Since all of us are limited in time and energy, when we choose to take on responsibilities in the church or the community to make a difference in the lives of people, doing those things that use our gifts make us more effective.

Knowing what your gifts are makes it clear when you should say, “No.” if asked to serve in a way that needs gifts you do not have. Knowing your gifts also makes it clear why you enjoy taking on some tasks much more than others and love saying, “Yes!” to those. If you can choose to do those things that match your spiritual gifts, you will find yourself more enthusiastic about serving, and it will seem easy! God hasn’t given to any one of us all the gifts, but to all of us as Christ’s body, the Church, God has distributed every gift so that all God wants done on earth can happen.

It’s exciting to know how God has gifted you and can use you. Find your gifts at the next series of 3 classes. Choose the time best for you:

Evenings: Wednesdays, October 2, 9, and 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 PMMornings: Thursdays, October 3, 10, and 17 from 10:00 AM to Noon

The cost for your book is $10.00. Register by calling Nancy at the Church office or by e-mailing Pastor Marilynn at [email protected].

Epworth ECEC Updates & Fundraiser The Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) preschool is off to a good start. The classrooms and the hallway to ECEC are covered with decorations to welcome children. Kevin Baughman, son of Cecil and Diane, made the playground ready for the children. Kevin spread mulch, cleaned the play scape and pulled weeds. We are ready for some outside play!

A few openings remain in the afternoon. Please contact ECEC if you know of someone interested in attending preschool. Children need to be three years old by September 30, 2013 and potty trained. Call the preschool at 419.531.7632 or send an email to [email protected].

FUN for the WHOLE FAMILY! Are you looking for an opportunity to eat at a restaurant where a portion of your bill benefits ECEC? Look no more! On Monday, September 23, you may dine in or take out at Shorty’s BBQ on Monroe Street. The preschool will earn a percentage of each meal purchased that day when you turn in your coupon (available on Sunday, September 22). Nick Mancy, Owner of Shorty’s, has been very generous to ECEC and the Toledo Community, so let’s give him and ECEC our support!

Mosquitos Can Still Get Under Your Skin

It’s September, so mosquito season is over, right?

Not necessarily! Mosquitos function best when the outdoor temperature is around 80 degrees. They become lethargic around 60 degrees, and can’t function at all once the temperature drops to 50. Most experts and resources say mosquito season isn’t “over” until temperatures remain consistently around 50 degrees. Given how temperatures and other factors like rainfall have swung from one extreme to the other all summer, chances are we could have a few more weeks to deal with the biting and itching, and potential exposure to mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus.

The good news is that there have been many fewer cases of West Nile Virus reported in 2013 in Ohio and Michigan. In Michigan, the Department of Agriculture reported its first cases of West Nile in horses in early September. One human case was reported in July. In 2012, there were 202 human cases of West Nile and 17 fatalities. The Ohio Department of Health reported its first case of West Nile Virus in August. In 2012, there were 121 cases of West Nile Virus and 7 deaths.

Most people infected with the virus experience fever, headache, fatigue and body aches. More serious cases develop into diseases like encephalitis and meningitis, with symptoms including high fever, convulsions and paralysis.

While it appears there is a downward trend in cases of West Nile Virus, there’s no doubt mosquitos can still make a walk in the woods or evening conversation in your own backyard quite uncomfortable! Help control mosquito populations by eliminating areas of standing water in your yard where mosquito larvae develop. Encourage beneficial insects who feed on mosquitos, like dragonflies, damselflies, and spiders. If you’re outside at dusk or dawn – when mosquitos are their most active – wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes, and apply mosquito repellant.

Mosquitos DO hibernate in animal burrows, hollow logs, and even basements! Perform a thorough fall cleanup – indoors and out – to reduce the mosquito population around your home in the spring.

Call Mary in the Education office or sign up on the Opportunities Page.

You Can Change a Child’s LifeSign up to serve in the Education Ministry for a week, a month, or the whole school year. We have many ways to help. We are especially looking for 11:00 leaders in preschool and W.O.W. If your children are being cared for and nurtured spiritually while you are in worship or Sunday school at 9:45, won’t you consider staying an extra hour to be with those children whose parents taught your children and are worshipping at 11:00?

On Sunday, September 29, fourth graders will receive Bibles at the beginning of our 9:45 service. They will then leave with their parents to attend their Milestone, BIBLE MANIA in the Family Life Center, where they will learn more about their Bible and what it can say to them through games, crafts, and wacky activities. Plan now to attend this special milestone in the faith life of your child. Call the Education office or sign up on the Opportunities Page today so we can send you a letter if you did not already receive one. We want to be sure every child receives a Bible who would like one!

An Overview of 2013 Trustee ActivityThe Epworth Trustees (working with the Staff, the Administrative Council, the Finance Committee and the Foundation) each year manage $250,000 to maintain assets with a value of $12,000,000. Capital spending, to repair and/or replace assets, comes from a pool of 1) Prior-year carry-forward values, 2) Current year Epworth Foundation grants and, 3) Other sources recommended by the Epworth Treasurer and approved by our Finance Committee and the Administrative Council. Highlights of significant 2013 Epworth activity are summarized below.

Thirty-six piers have been installed to reinforce and raise our Family Life Center foundation. At this time, only a limited number of clean-up tasks need to be finished. A reserve fund, used for unexpected future needs, is paying for the $60,000 cost of this project. Annually, 10% of the Trustee budget ($25,000) is assigned to this reserve fund. The replacement of dated and inefficient Epworth boilers is nearing completion. The combined annual savings from using 40% less natural gas use and eliminating required boiler rebuild costs are expected to cover the financing cost for this $70,000 Project. As described in the Epworth “YOUR HOUSE – OUR HOUSE” campaign, a project to install a new ValleyView walking surface and to provide a handicapped doorway will begin on Monday, October 7th. During construction, our ValleyView entrance will be closed for a week or two – or perhaps a bit longer should unexpected problems be encountered. Proceeds from the “YOUR HOUSE - OUR HOUSE” campaign will pay the estimated $35,000 cost of this project.

Other completed capital projects, funded from within the $28,000 Grant from the Epworth Foundation, include: 1) Increasing the number of handicapped and van-accessible parking spaces and the upgrading of our parking signs, 2) Installing a new audio-visual projection system in the Christian Education Department, 3) Purchasing a new “state-of-the-art” keyboard for use in our Contemporary Worship Service and 4) A variety of landscape activities related to our spring clean-up project.

We currently plan for two other 2013 projects, including: 1) Repairs to our trim - the surface below the edge of our roof, and 2) An examination of Epworth security alternatives, with emphasis on our worship and education areas.

The Epworth Trustees focus on using available resources to address a range of priorities and look to the Administrative Council and the Congregation for direction and financial support.
