SWAZILAND ESSENTIAL MEDICINE LIST

Introduction

The Swaziland Essential Medicines List is a selection of medicines necessary to

meet the medical needs of the majority of people living in Swaziland. The

selection took into consideration many factors including disease patterns,

safety, efficacy and the total cost of therapy. The National Pharmaceutical

Policy calls for these medicines to be of acceptable standard of quality and be

made available through healthcare systems in adequate amounts and in the

described dosage forms. This list may be used as a guideline when developing

the Standard Treatment Guideline.

The Policy requires that medicines should be used in the appropriate manner

through the promotion of the concept of rational medicines use; to achieve this,

the medicines have been classified into four classes as indicated below, these

classes control the levels at which the different medicines can be prescribed

Class Description

A Indicates medicines that are distributed to all health care

facilities as part of primary healthcare services. Both doctors and

nurses can prescribe medicines from this class

B Indicates medicines that are distributed to Health-centres and

Hospitals. The prescribing of these medicines is restricted to

medical doctors only

C Indicates medicines that are distributed to hospitals only.

Medicines in this class can only be prescribed by medical doctors

working in hospitals, following appropriate microbial/diagnostic

test results

S These are medicines that are distributed on demand by specialist

doctors

* Indicates medicines which are distributed by (Vertical) National

Programmes e.g. Tuberculosis, Mental Health, Family Planning,

E.P.I., and Malaria Control

Comments to improve this list will be highly appreciated. These should be

accompanied by evidence-based motivation as indicated in page 2 of this

document. In addition, any information relating to product quality problems or

adverse reactions should be reported using the form attached at the end of this

document.
