The Bulgarians are a South Slavic ethnic group native to Bulgaria . The Bulgarians have descended from three main tribal groups,
which mixed themselves and formed a Slavic-speaking ethnicity in the First
Bulgarian Empire. Most Bulgarians live in Bulgaria, where they are around 6 million,
constituting 85% of the population.

Bulgarian Turks are the largest ethnic minority in Bulgaria. They are mostly
concentrated in the northeastern provinces and in the south. The Turkish community
became an ethnic minority when the Principality of Bulgaria was established
after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. Islamic identity remain strong and over 95%
of the Turkish ethnic group profess this religion.

The Roma or the Gypsies constitute one of ethnic minorities in Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, the Roma are most commonly referred to as Tsigani.
