ANTI-NARCOTIC DAY
The event themed ‘Say no to drug Abuse’, held on 28th of June at Ravindra Natya Mandir,
Dadar proved to be a jet of awareness for the students, in this age of drugs and addiction, a
wonderful initiative taken by Mumbai University. The dignitaries of the Anti-Drug Association
of Maharashtra showcased their efforts towards the betterment of the young blood of this
era.
The event started with the host asking about the importance of the day with the students
presenting their inputs. There was a bunch of dignitaries giving their time and efforts to the
event and enlightening the students with their ideas, knowledge and experiences.
Drugs, Alcohols & Smoking may be a
temporary stress reliever but is
carcinogenic in long run. It attacks
the central nervous system taking
you to a mental state where you can
no longer think and crave for more
drug. A video supporting the former
statement was being shown. A video
in which a teenager and healthy
swimmer, falls prey to smoking and drinking. Eventually he loses his health and turns into a
weak, pale guy. The video was such an eye opener for the students and others as well. Some
of the students showed courage and came forward to explain their stories as drug addicts
and how they overcame it.
The event was addressed by The Famous Actor Devdatta Naghe, who himself has been a part
of NSS in his times. He interacted with the audience, inspiring the students to stop drugs
themselves and encourage others to do the same. The event was great success, witnessed by
a variety of colleges of Mumbai University. We learnt to have a healthy diet and stay away
from drugs!
TREE PLANTATION DRIVE
Trees are the earth's endless efforts to speak to the listening heavens. And we truly did
experience it!
The NSS unit of DJSCE, conducted a Tree Plantation Drive on 16th July in Aarey Colony,
Goregaon East. The Drive started at 9am, where they guided us with the basic norms of
plantation and our volunteers efficiently proceeded.
A total of 145 Saplings were planted by 120 enthusiastic volunteers. Mr. N. V. Rathod, CEO of
Aarey Colony motivated us to promote tree plantation and take proper care of our
surroundings. We were inspired to visit our plantation site more often and engage with
nature in its purest form.
Although it required lots of physical work, we all went back mentally refreshed. An event out
of the regular hustle and bustle of the city left us all rejuvenated and soulfully satisfied.
DIGIDHAN AWARENESS PROGRAM
All the students have experienced the hassle of carrying coins and paper notes, yet many of
us refrain from using the easier and convenient alternatives - digital payment options.
DJNSS decided to organize a Digidhan Awareness Event to make students aware about the
various cashless payment methods
available to them and how to use them.
Publicity for the event was done on social
media to increase curiosity about the
event in young minds.
The event took place on 3rd August and
4th August.
NSS volunteers gave presentations
focusing on digital economy. Students
were made aware of the numerous payment options like net banking, BHIM, Paytm,
Payment cards, Unified Payment Interface(UPI) and M-POS machines. Benefits of cashless
economy were explained.
A Q&A session was conducted after presentation in every class to solve the queries students
had regarding cashless transactions and how to use different facilities available to us.
Everyone was eager to know about cashless payment options. Many students were
motivated to try digital transactions in place of conventional paper ones.
It might be difficult to switch totally to cashless economy, but the least we can try is to
maximise the use of it whenever possible.
WASTE TO COMPOST
1st of August proved to be a day of innovation, a day of knowledge and awareness. An ever
encouraging seminar conducted by combined efforts of the NSS Unit Mumbai University, the
people of 'My Green Society' working with Keshav Shrushti NGO at Kamla Mehta College of
Commerce has shown lights for the onset of a revolution.
The concept dealt with the
idea of how the greenhouse
gases trap the UV rays and
abandon them to the
atmosphere leading to global
warming. This also influenced
by not treating the waste
properly. The wet and dry
waste together is burnt and
disposed to the atmosphere,
affecting all the landfills. In an
attempt to bring this to light, people are asked what if organic waste and dry waste is
separated. The answer to this is the central idea of today's event. Separating wet waste,
composting it to get the manure for plants reduces a huge amount of waste to be disposed.
The idea says waste should be segregated in three parts, wet waste, dry waste and rejected
waste. The NGO, Keshav Shrushti takes initiatives to develop a compost system in the
societies, and other major areas. College students are encouraged to develop projects which
include composting of wet waste of their college canteens.
The government has taken this step, making it compulsory for the households to segregate
the waste before giving it off.
The event today successfully recognised by students from 14 different colleges, equally
enthusiastic to contribute for the change, promising evolutionary success.
ANNUAL CHARITY DRIVE
"We cannot help everyone but everyone can help someone."
Sometimes the smallest contribution from one person can go a long way in helping someone
in need. To follow this very ideology, DJNSS arranged an Annual Charity Drive.
Along with spreading the message on social media, publicity for the event was also done in
all the classes as well as staff rooms.
A desk full of items like Rakhis, anklets, bracelets, quilled earrings, friendship bands, towels,
innovative products like sanitary pad pouches and mobile charging covers, along with
numerous mouthwatering varieties of
chocolates was set up from 24th July to 5th
August.
All these items were made by the students of
Punarvas Educational Society and Vallabdhas
Darga Indian Society, which are institutes for
mentally handicapped children. All the
proceeds from the two week event were
given to these schools.
We got an amazing response from students
as well as teachers. We had a continuous
stream of buyers right from 8:00 am to
closing time, 5:30 pm.
Everyone was eager and wanted to do their part in helping these kids. After all, the
satisfaction from giving cannot be compared with anything else.
FREEDOM FROM BIAS
The afternoon of 13th August 2017 was greeted by the kind and pure hearted children of the
Jay Vakeel Foundation. An initiative was taken to give the society an opportunity to get to
know about the real truth of the lives of people suffering from down syndrome. An apt place
with ample amount of public, The Infinity Mall, Malad was availed for the awareness
program.
The Nss volunteers of DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering were invited to join in on the
event. The event was honoured in the presence of dignitaries like the legal from Delhi, Mr. U
K Shukla, Sub Inspectors of the Mumbai Police department, Anuraddha Patil and Bhaarti
Havde. Also the officials from the Jay Vakeel foundations like Anjali Sabnani joined us in the
upper ground floor of the mall for the event.
The sweet enthusiastic children had come prepared to interact with us in the most basic
way of communication, void of words, a dance performance! Their high spirits made it
difficult for people to stop themselves from tapping their feet to the beat.
The volunteers of our college sat down with most of the students and helped them colour
their imaginations on paper. The outcome was a beautiful set of butterflies giving wings of
confidence to the children.
Not to forget, the children responded beautifully and immediately set up a bond with us
proving that they are no different than us and have needs similar to ours- acceptance,
opportunities and love. We students pledged to be more approaching towards anyone with
any form of disability and to make sure they would not feel neglected in this society of ours
which will welcome them with open arms.
ORPHANAGE VISIT
"We can’t help everyone
But everyone can help someone"
On the 70th Independence Day, the NSS unit got an opportunity to bring a smile on those
faces who truly deserve it .Unlike some people who treat national festivals as an additional
holiday, there are many who long to celebrate these festivals with loved ones.
The event started at 8:00 am on a sunny Tuesday morning.
A group of 100 students visited orphanages across the city including Snehasadan-Andheri
and Premsadan-Malad . The orphanage is a home to them in all respects. They have a loving
group of caretakers, friends who have become family and all amenities that a home can
offer.
As our goal was to make their day full of entertainment and fun we organized a jam session,
a story telling session and enacted a drama. While the older children enjoyed singing songs,
the little tots were given a fun exercise to keep their minds busy with. They not only treated
us with respect but also participated enthusiastically in all the events conducted.
We went there to make their day enjoyable and returned with countless beautiful memories.
We were thankful that they welcomed us not only in their homes but also their hearts.
RALLY FOR RIVERS
For the past few decades, water level in our rivers is falling continuously and some of our
perennial rivers have become seasonal.
Rally for rivers was an initiative by Isha foundation which focusses on planting trees in one
km stretch along all major rivers.
The NSS unit of DJ Sanghvi actively participated and promoted this wonderful idea. Our
volunteers decided to support this event by participating in an awareness rally on September
1, 2017.
Everyone was dressed in blue to show their support towards dying rivers. Around 60
volunteers created awareness about the rally in the areas near Mithibai College, holding
placards.
The pedestrians were given leaflets and explained about Rally for rivers.
The event created a lot of awareness amongst the general public.
ORIENTATION PROGRAM
The Orientation Ceremony of the
NSS Unit of DJ Sanghvi was held
on the 11th of September 2017. It
began on an auspicious note with
a prayer and lighting of the diya by
the dignitaries. The ceremony
then proceeded with speeches
being delivered by the Principal,
followed by a presentation being
shown by the NSS Area
Coordinator, Prof Pranav Panchal
about NSS at the state and
national level.
The Principal inspired the young minds of our volunteers to bring about the change in our
society. On the auspicious day of Swami Vivekananda’s anniversary he projected his views in
front of our volunteers. Students were also informed of the events conducted up until now
and the events yet to be conducted by our student leaders. The previous year volunteers
were congratulated on their outstanding service of 240 hours dedicated towards the society.
Some of the volunteers were rewarded with certificates for their outstanding performance in
the last camp conducted. The Ceremony concluded with the NSS claps by everyone present.
ANIMAL SHELTER REPORT
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of their soul remains un-awakened"
It is said that patting,
cuddling an animal
could be as soothing to
the mind and heart as
deep meditation and
almost as good for a
soul as prayer.
Following this very
thinking, DJNSS
arranged for an animal
shelter visit to Bai
Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit
Hospital on 17th
September.
The publicity for the event was done using social media to create a buzz among the
volunteers. We gathered a huge response of around 75 volunteers who were present at the
hospital at 7.30 am donning white t-shirts.
At the hospital, all the volunteers got to feed the animals ranging from cats and dogs to
cows. After the feeding session, the volunteers were guided by Ms. Anuradha, who works at
the hospital. With her love for the animals and passion to create awareness about the
destress faced by these homeless babies, she guided the volunteers around the premises of
the hospital, introducing them to the various facilities and the care that is provided to the
animals. The volunteers then visited the Buddy House, which was home for many recovering
animals.
It was a Pawfect sunny Sunday for the NSS Family.
YEH INDIA KA TIME HAI
"We will be remembered only if we give to our younger generation a prosperous and safe
India, resulting out of economic prosperity coupled with civilization heritage.” well said by
A.P.J.ABDULKALAM
Following this very thinking, MUMBAI UNIVERSITY had organise programme” Yeh India ka

BEACH CLEAN-UP DRIVE
“My focus is not merely a beautiful city, but a city that’s made beautiful on the parameters
of good health and cleanliness.”
-Narendra Modi
It is that time of the year again when festivities are leading to a lot of environment
pollution. Acting on the very words of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the NSS unit of D.J.
Sanghvi College of Engineering organized a Clean-up drive on Juhu Beach on the 24th of
September. This was received enthusiastically by the 112 volunteers who gathered on the
Sunday morning at 7 am.
Before getting started, all volunteers were provided

in groups of four, with two separate bags for collecting
the dry waste and wet waste separately; thus ensuring
easier disposal. Armed with the required items and their
will to make a difference, the volunteers set out to pick
up all the garbage, not leaving anything behind. We
were on the receiving end of a lot of smiles and positive
encouragements from people out on their morning walks. Seeing the younger generation
contributing to the society filled their hearts with warmth. Some of them even joined us and
lent a helping hand. We also interacted with people who enquired about the drive and our
NSS unit.
The drive continued till not a speck of garbage was in sight. The volunteers were given
refreshments. They then dispersed with a sense of pride knowing that this amazing start to
the day might make the visitors’ day a tad more beautiful!

“Tiny droplets make a mighty ocean “
And in true DJ spirit, countless DJites donated grains and packaged food items over the
week. Basic food items like Rice, Moong dal, Sugar, and packed foods like Biscuits, Chips
were collected.
On the occasion of World Food Day on 16th October, grains were donated to Shanti Daan,
Borivali. It was a pleasure to help this wonderful organisation with their resources and their
aim to serve the needy.
The packaged items were then distributed among the underprivileged and homeless people
of Vile Parle and Borivali. The number of smiles earned during this journey were
immeasurable. Our hope was to see that no one sleeps on an empty stomach.
Every moment spent with the kids of Shanti Daan Aashram was captured not only on our
cameras but also in our hearts. The NSS Unit donated a small amount of happiness but
received a lot more than that. They were showered with the blessings and love of these
beautiful souls.
FIRST AID SEMINAR
Everyone can be a hero.
Basic first aid knowledge is a critical aspect that is often overlooked in our curriculum. The
first aid administered in an emergency could well mean the difference between life
and_death.
With this in mind, the NSS unit of D.J. Sanghvi College of Engineering organised a seminar on
First Aid Training in the college. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Ankit Dubey and
commenced at 2:30 pm.
Dr. Ankit covered a wide range of emergency situations that one could come across, like
choking, heart attack, epilepsy attack, asthma attack and many more. He gave us a detailed
explanation of symptoms to lool out for which was followed by immediate steps to be taken
in such cases. With the help of volunteers, he demonstrated certain emergency procedures
and like CPR, abdominal thrusts and recovery positions.
This presentation was followed by a Q&A session where our enthusiastic attendees asked Dr.
Ankit doubts regarding some emergency situations like concussion, fracture, hypothermia

distributed over the areas and everyone gave their share for contributing to our society.
There were 93 volunteers who gathered in
the morning, all donned in white.
The drive was received in a positive way by
the residents, who not only offered us
their newspapers, but gave us countless
blessings .It was heart-warming to see the
terrific enthusiasm and response from all
the residents giving us the love and
appreciation to continue further.
There was a huge amount of collection
made by the end of the drive, which amounted to a great deal of charity on our part.
In all it was a Newsastic Morning for The NSS Family!
NATIONAL INTEGRATION DAY
National Integration is the realization of a collective identity among the residents of the
country. It inculcates a sense of oneness that is crucial for building a prosperous nation.
To honour the thoughts of the great Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel on his birth anniversary, which
is also the National Integration Day, the students of DJ Sanghvi came together to celebrate
the spirit of national integrity, which is the most distinguishing feature of a vast and
heterogeneous country like India with an awesome diversity of cultures. The students were
engaged in an insightful and a healthy discussion regarding the country’s unity and the
everyday events affecting it. The idea of National Integration has also led to the obliteration
of social and religious differences. The students understood that if people of our country
stand in unity, many societal issues can be eradicated. They realized the importance of
oneness and are standing in support of the country’s unity and honour.
The session was concluded with all the students taking a pledge to protect the nation’s
integrity and spreading awareness about the same.
VIGILANCE AWARENESS REPORT
"To prevent evil is the great end of government, the end for which vigilance and severity are
properly employed”
As we know , Corruption is spreading like pollution and causing destruction.
Considering this major problem The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) decided that this
year the Vigilance Awareness Week would be observed from 30th October to 4th November,
2017. The theme of the week would be “My Vision-Corruption Free India”
Following this very thinking, DJNSS arranged a Seminar by Mr. MOHIT JAIN, IRS chief
executive officer and join him in” Mission of “Corruption Free India”on 07th November held
at D. J .SANGHVI college.
The event was addressed by MR. TAWTE, who was retired chief executive officer of IRS. He
explained we students the basic meaning of VIGILANCE and related terms VALUES, ETHICS.
Further, he made us understand who all are motivating corruption and who are victim of
corruption through various examples.
Followed by this there was a interactive session of students with the officers about how we
individuals at personal level stop CORRUPTION and make a difference.
Also there was discussion that the definition of honest man is changed in today’s corrupt
world,
Honest man : who takes bribe and completes his clients work,
Corrupt man: who takes bribe and does not complete his clients work,
Fool: who does not take bribe and completes his clients work.
Though this session all the volunteers were enlighten know the real meaning of Corruption
and the ways to minimise it at personal level. It was an informative and beneficial session for
the NSS Family.
ANNUAL SPECIAL CAMP 2017-18
Day 1
The commencement of NSS CAMP 2017-2018 was on 30th December, 2017 at 5:30 am,
where the volunteers boarded a train for Dahanu Road and reached the station by 9 am.
Later, the volunteers by public transport reached the village Narpad.
The session of the day began with the introduction of the role of NSS in the community
service and briefing of activities to be done in henceforth days of the camp. Prof.Vyankatesh
Bagal sir with his speech enlightened us about the NSS unit and explained how it is going to
significantly change the life of villagers here during the camp.
Firstly the volunteers were divided into seven groups containing of eight members each.
Later they were assigned duties of each day to wake volunteers up, to cook and serve food
for the day, clean the rooms and surrounding for the day and ask the volunteers to maintain
discipline during activities and meet.
“CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME” - the volunteers were asked to clean their room first then the
surrounding before they start the activity for day. During room cleaning, volunteers also
applied anti-rust paint to the grills and as shramdaan, lent a helping hand to the
beautification of the campus. Volunteers were also making posters for the RALLY for the
following day.
Late evening, when the tasks were completed, the volunteers had their lunch and rested to
be fresh for the next day.
Day 2
Day 2 was the first day of shramdaan.
At sharp 5:30am, volunteers had their first workout session and the late-comers had to do
extra reps on the ground. The main aim of this exercise was to warm-up the muscles so that
everyone was ready and energized for the long day ahead. At 8:30 am the volunteers had
breakfast.
A smaller group of volunteers were given the task of painting the walls of a secondary school
in Ambewadi. A teaching staff of the school accompanied this group to ensure ease of
workflow. Motivational thoughts were written on the walls the logo was repainted. This
helped improve the overall look and ambience of the school and its surroundings.
The remaining volunteers were delegated the task of rebuilding the road to Ambewadi which
is critical to the people living there and is the only means to reach to the village. Important
guidelines and the flow of work were discussed with the volunteers and they were separated
into smaller groups for performing specific tasks. The process began with the removal of
earth and rock by digging, and removal of vegetation and followed by the laying of pavement
material. This large task was completed in the course of next days.
A simple dirt road was transformed into a traversable one by the diligent crowd of the NSS
unit.
At 4:30 PM evening volunteers
were called upon again for
spreading awareness about clean
and healthy living. Four groups
rallied for an hour stressing the
importance of cleanliness and
hygiene.
After this tiring and consuming day
of work, volunteers were dismissed
for the day.
DAY 3
The day started with the 5.30am morning workout where all the volunteers enthusiastically
participated in the warm ups and exercises. After the breakfast, the volunteers were divided
into two groups. One of the groups consisted of 10-15 volunteers who headed for the tree
plantation activity in Narpad village, while the others carried forward for sharmdan to
Ambevadi village. There they completed their work of building the broken roads for the
localities. Ample of energy and will to do work was observed in all the volunteers and the
work was completed in just a few hours.
This task took sheer hard work from all volunteers, which they willingly provided. Seeing the
efforts of all these students, many passer-by’s appreciated the work, love and blessings were
showered for the joyous individuals.
In the late afternoon, volunteers went on to do publicity for the medical camp in both the
villages, which was supposed to be held the next day. Some volunteers continued in Narpad
while others were publicising the camp in Ambevadi.
After a draining and satisfying day of hard work, the volunteers were dismissed for the day.
Day 4
Today was the most important event of all: Medical Check-up. The volunteers were eager to
conduct the event, riding on the successful publicity on the previous day.
The day started right on schedule with the volunteers assembling for morning exercises at
5:30 a.m. sharp. After the 30 minute
exercise session, volunteers were
dismissed and given time to get ready for
the long day ahead. Breakfast was served
at 8:30 a.m. and a meeting was called
immediately after.
The check-ups included:
● Height, Weight and BMI
● Blood Pressure test
● Blood Sugar test
● General health recommendations
and advice
The volunteers were then divided into groups and assigned tasks viz. crowd management,
crowd interaction, assistants to the medical examiners in each of the above tests, etc. At the
same time, another group of volunteers were sent to remind the villagers of the medical
check-up.
The first medical check-up began at 9 a.m. in Narpad village. The villagers arrived with great
optimism and happiness on their faces. Four of our volunteers were specifically assigned to
fill out a form consisting of the villagers’ basic details. This would be filled out by the
volunteers after each of the check-ups was conducted. The check-ups were organized one
after the other in an orderly manner and the results were filled out on their form. The
villagers also interacted with the examiners one-on-one to get advice on any other physical
problem they might have. Special attention was given to the senior citizens and disabled and
see that they are taken care of while at the check-up. A few of our volunteers were also
assigned to interact with the children while in the waiting queue. As the villagers exited the
hall, their thoughts on the event were taken into account and we had overwhelmingly
positive reviews. The event was concluded by 1 p.m. and the volunteers returned to the
Ashram for lunch.
The second medical check-up was conducted at 3:00 pm at Samaj Mandir in Ambewadi
village. The volunteers followed the same procedure as the first medical check-up. This
event, too, passed without a hitch and was concluded by 5p.m.
While the medical check-ups were being conducted, a handful of our female volunteers went
to Mahatre Secondary School in Ambewadi village. The girls in the school were made aware
of menstruation, use and disposal of sanitary napkins, good touch bad touch and pregnancy
prevention. They were encouraged to speak up if they felt abused.
It was an extremely productive day and the volunteers were left with a sense of contentment
having contributed towards the betterment of the villagers.
DAY 5
As all mornings in the camp, this morning was no different. It began with a perfectly
scheduled 5.30 am workout, where all the volunteers were seen sweating their hearts out
with the continuous jogging and the morning exercises.
The first half of the day consisted of the skit groups going to perform their skits and the local
schools of Ambevadi and Narpad. The group of volunteers first went to Ambevadi village
where they performed their skit for primary students and enlightened them with their
amazing drama skills.
As the day continued, few volunteers went to J.P School, Narpad. There they helped the
school with contributing in painting the walls of the schools, also making the paintings
interactive for the students to understand and enjoy. In the late afternoon, the skit groups
went to the Annual function in Narpad for performing their skits for the localities. The skits
revolved around topics like education, cleanliness, sanitation and alcohol prohibition.
After the performances, the volunteers also got a chance to interact with the schools kids.
They learned some new things from the kids and in the process also tried to inculcate in
them the importance of Education. They played games with the students and had one of
most beautiful days of their camp.
In all the experience of the interactions had a wonderful impact on all the volunteers and
they cherished the day with great love and pleasure. The day concluded with not just smiles
on their faces but also gratitude and affection in their hearts.
Day 6
The event planned for today was school visit and interaction with the kids.
Morning exercises were conducted as everyday. The volunteers further practiced for the
dance and skit to be performed at the schools later in the day.
Volunteers had their breakfast by 8am. Soon after, the volunteers were given brief
instructions regarding the events to be conducted at the schools. They were also given
pointers on how to interact with the kids. Volunteers left the ashram at 9 a.m. to reach the
local school in Ambewadi after a 45 minute walk. They were greeted with cheers of glee
from the kids, having performed a skit in the same school the previous day. The kids
assembled on the school lawn and the Head Mistress of the school expressed her gratitude
to the volunteers for their
efforts.
The students were divided
into groups as the
volunteers mingled and
engaged in fun activities
with them. Initially shy, the
kids slowly grew warm to
their presence and started
enjoying themselves to the
fullest. After the first round
of activities, a lemon-spoon
race was conducted in
which all the kids
participated. After a
number of rounds, six winners were declared; three boys and three girls, and were lauded
for their performance. Volunteers then performed the dance for which they had prepared
diligently. The kids were happy beyond measure as was evident from their smiling faces.
After a short impromptu dance with the kids, the volunteers distributed notebooks, pencils,
erasers and sharpeners to the kids. The winners of the lemon-spoon race were given an extra
box of crayons.
The same events were conducted at the local school in Narpad after lunch.
The volunteers looked round with fulfilment having made an impact on impressionable
young minds and making their day!
Day 7
The seventh day was the closing day of the camp. At sharp 5:30 am, volunteers had an
exercise session for warming up of their muscles, then the volunteers were asked to go to
their rooms to pack-up their bags, to clean their rooms which was followed by breakfast.
Following the breakfast the volunteers worked off the final enthusiastic outburst in the final
slot of shramdaan completing the task at hand. Later there was a summing up session by NSS
unit and a speech by Prof. Rahul Taware for volunteers. There was an acknowledgement
session for volunteers to appreciate their respect towards the villagers and will to help them
in every possible manner.
Then the volunteers were asked to gather up with their bags for the final goodbye to all. The
place which was new to all on the first day had become home for all over the days. With
heavy hearts, the volunteers finally left the place. The volunteers took a public transport to
reach Dahanu Road station for boarding a train at 3.30pm.
WASTE TO COMPOST
A seminar was conducted by combined efforts of the NSS Unit Mumbai University, the people of 'My Green Society' working with Keshav Shrushti NGO at Kamla Mehta College of Commerce on 1st of August. The concept dealt with the idea of how the greenhouse gases trap the UV rays and abandon them to the atmosphere leading to global warming. This is also influenced by not treating the waste properly. Students were taught how to separate and dispose off waste in the correct manner. The government has taken this step, making it compulsory for the households to segregate the waste before giving it off. To bring these ideas and knowledge into effect DJNSS gathered a handful of volunteers to practice these methods in the neighbouring localities. This event was conducted on 21st of January 2018 at Blossom Apartments Kandivali. Residents were made aware about the ill effects on the environment of not dumping and segregating waste properly and its hand in the increasing global-warming. An interactive presentation was shown focussing on the need to segregate waste in three parts, wet waste, dry waste and rejected waste. Following this a Q/A session was conducted by the volunteers, all the thoughts and queries were taken up and discussed and length. To help the residents to kickstart their journey to a better world, two dustbins were provided.

ROAD SAFETY REPORT
“Better Late Than Dead On Time”
The NSS Unit at D.J.Sanghvi college of Engineering organised a road safety seminar on the
23rd of January, 2018.
The seminar was organised and associated with “United for Road Safety “. The seminar was
conducted by three professionals who were trained and the whole program was a part of the
Safe Rider Training Program. There were around 20+ volunteers who were given this
training. The seminar started with a brief about importance of road safety majorly for bike
riders. Then the volunteers were asked to give a pre-informative test on some simple
questions related to driving and safety. This was to test their knowledge before the training.
The training was divided into two parts. The first half consisted a PowerPoint presentation by
which the volunteers were informed about the basics that one should have if he/she is a bike
rider. Following this the second half was hands-on training given by a professional bike rider.
He showed the volunteers on how to position yourself on the bike and what all gears are
necessary while riding one.
The training was completed with the last part of the session where the volunteers were
made to give a post-informative test, to evaluate and understand how well they could gain
knowledge in these hours. All the volunteers were given certificates of completion and
badges by the “United for Road Safety“team. After this a feedback was taken from the
candidates on how intellectual the entire session was.
In all we can concluded that after the seminar our volunteers were better informed and
better equipped for future on the roads.
THANKSGIVING
The NSS unit of D.J. Sanghvi College of Engineering conducted the Thanksgiving Event on the
11th of February, for the people who make a monumental difference in our life: the
policemen, the motormen, the firemen and bus drivers/conductors. Had it not been for
these people, our life as we know it would come to a standstill. In our daily hustle, we fail to
realize their importance.
The event took place at two locations: Malad and Goregaon. Volunteers were divided into
groups and were sent to the Police Station, the Fire Station and the Bus Depot at both the
locations.
The volunteers had just one goal in mind: to make these people feel special and to express
our immense gratitude on behalf of the city. While we may cringe and complain about being
stuck in traffic, delayed trains or the increasing crimes, they work year round to make our
lives easier.
They also interacted with all the officers who shared stories of their daily work life which
inspired all the volunteers. Thanking them for their work was just a small effort for the
service they provide us. Rest assured, they went through their day with a smile on their face!
BLOOD DONATION
“A single pint can save Three lives, A single gesture can create a Million Smiles” Following this motto, DJNSS Unit organised a Blood Donation Drive on 15th of February 2018. Thalassemia Check-Up Drive
Thalassemia is a lifelong disease which people are born with, through hereditary genes. It
can drastically affect the health of a person. But it cannot be detected without a dedicated
test for it. To spread awareness and help people diagnose it, the NSS Unit of D.J. Sanghvi
College of Engineering organised a Thalassemia Check Up Drive.
The event was conducted on the 16th of February, in SVKM premises in Vile Parle. A mobile
van was made available, equipped with facilities to carry out the required tests by qualified
doctors from Shri C. B. Patel Research Centre. The event was publicised in all the nearby
colleges and area. People were encouraged to get the test done, for their own benefit. The
mobile van had a heavy footfall throughout the day. A few NSS volunteers were always
present around to help the doctors with anything they might need, and also for crowd
management. Those diagnosed with Thalassemia were given tips on healthcare and lifestyle
by the doctors. Everyone who got the test done was quite satisfied with the management
and experience.

ENERGY CONSERVATION SKIT
“Every act of energy conservation is more than just common sense,
it is an act of patriotism”
--Jimmy Carter
To spread knowledge about the acute need of conserving energy NSS volunteers came
together to perform a skit on “Energy Conservation” in the neighbouring localities.
More than 30 of our young enthusiastic volunteers participated in this activity. Some of the
very important facts were shared with the crowd about non-renewable resources, how to
replace them and how utilization of renewable sources of energy is a key to a better
tomorrow. The audience was made aware of the ill effects of exploitation of fossil fuels and
their eventual result on the climatic changes.
Relatable facts and figures like how “Reducing your PC monitor brightness from 100% to 70%
can save up to 20% of the energy the monitor uses.” and “Leaving a computer on overnight
for a year creates enough CO2 to fill a double-decker bus”
made the skit more interesting for the respective crowd.
Volunteers with their catchy and persuasive lines made the crowd take a step back and think
about the utmost need for conservation. The audience were taught about the ways to
conserve energy at the end.
Both the activities were performed at Prime Mall and N M College of Commerce and
Economics on 13th February and at the college campus itself on 14th February.
The volunteers got a wonderful response from the crowd and were thoroughly appreciated
for their work. The event was managed well, and the volunteers were effective in spreading
their message about energy conservation.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
The NSS unit of D.J. Sanghvi College of Engineering organised a Swachh Bharat Clean-up
Event. This event was conducted near Andheri station with the help of the local cleaning
authorities.
The enthusiastic volunteers arrived at Andheri Station at 8 am. They were provided with
cleaning brooms, safety goggles and masks. The local cleaning authorities guided the
students regarding the how and where to clean. Armed with the brooms, the volunteers set
out to complete the task ahead. They swept and collected many bags of trash. Inspired by
our volunteers, a few pedestrians even offered to help us. A lot of people also complimented
and appreciated our efforts.
The event was concluded in a couple of hours as all the areas in the vicinity of Andheri
station were cleaned. The volunteers were then addressed by the authorities who expressed
their gratitude for our help. They took an oath to never litter the surroundings and then
dispersed.
