The Ceremonial Mace

Carried at the head of the procession today for the first time, TheEvergreen State College Mace is the gift of Academic Vice-President andProvost Byron Youtz, who donated the materials, and Faculty MemberEarle McNeil, who gave his time and talent in its creation.

The Mace is rich in symbolism. Beginning with a square core ofWestern maple, McNeil laminated narrow strips of walnut to maple andattached these to the core in a cross design. At the open comers he insertedbubinga, a wood red in color and rich in grain. This cylindrical, three-foot,main column represents the tree of life or Word of creation with the redbubinga also symbolic of the sun. Nine grooves inlaid with copper denotethe nine levels of life from animal spirit to enlightenment. The copper bandssuggest the bonding forces of life.

McNeil expects to do further work on the cap of the mace which isnow an octahedron, a crystal shape of purity and perfection. Representingthe centralizing impulse for the tree of life, each of its eight faces is inlaidwith a disc. The top four symbolize the main characteristics of the humanmind: wisdom, innocence, introspection, and illumination. The lower foursignify ways of experiencing the world through thinking, feeling, intuitionand the senses.
