Roller coasters started out as ice-slides in Russia in the mid 1600’s. These were tracks made of lumber and covered with a few inches of ice.
The French were the first to actually add wheels to their slides. Then, in 1817, France developed the first coasters to actually lock to the track by having wheels on either side of the track.
The First looping coaster was made in Frascati Gardens in Paris, France. It had a 43 foot high hill, and a 13 foot high loop. This ride was extremely tested before and human was allowed to ride it.
The first US coaster wasn’t made until 1872. It was called the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway. It was actually a rail way down a mountain used for transporting coal. In 1873, it began carrying passengers too.
La Marcus Adna Thompson was the first one to patent a roller coaster in the US. He is known as the father of American coasters. His first coaster was like the Russian coasters, with two parallel tracks. This coaster was patented on January first, 1887. Cyclone is the oldest
running roller coaster in America. It is on Coney Island, in New York City. It is a wooden coaster, and was built in a 1927, and became a national landmark in 1991.
