Adult Faith Formation

Sunday Morning Offerings—9:45 am

Rally Day Celebration Join us Sunday, September 7

at 9:45 am in the Sanctuary as we begin a new Sunday

School year and learn about faith formation

opportunities this fall. After our Opening Celebration

we will participate in the God’s Work, Our Hands

project in Price Hall.

CARITAS Boot Camp Join Kim Johnson and

members of the CARITAS team in the Chapel, as they

provide details on the ins and outs of our ministry to

and with our guests who will be with us October 17-24.

Living the Questions 2.0 Join Pastor Tom Bosserman, beginning, Sunday, September 20 in Price Hall.

People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer humanity. At the same time, many have

a sense that they are alone in being a Christian and that "salvaging" Christianity is a hopeless task. What is

needed is a safe environment where people have permission to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask

but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic. Living the Questions is for both seekers and

"church alumni/ae" convinced that Christianity still has relevance in the 21st Century. Providing a variety of

topics, Living the Questions helps people explore the future of Christianity and what a meaningful faith can

look like in today's world.

Roots & Practices of Lutheran Christians -Join our called staff, beginning Sunday, September 27 in the

Chapel for conversations based on the Lutheran Christian faith. This class is ideal for new(er) members to

Epiphany and those who want a refresher on Lutheran beliefs. A book will be available for participants.

Tuesday Morning & Wednesday Evening Offerings

Jeremiah & Lamentations Join us Tuesday mornings, beginning September 15 at 10:30 am or Wednesday

evenings beginning, September 16 at 6:30 pm in the Chapel. This fall we will explore the Old Testament books

Jeremiah and Lamentations. We encounter many voices in the pages of these books: the prophet Jeremiah,

sundry kings, Jeremiah’s enemies, and a people at first defiant and later in excruciating torment. In addition,

we hear the voice of God speaking through Jeremiah and Jeremiah’s contemporaries. God, however, does not

just speak “back there” and “then.” The living God speaks to us through the Bible, this book of faith. This

study looks at how God is revealed to us as one who will not rest until we are at last a people whose hearts and

minds are molded to the image and likeness of Jesus.

Parent Chat While the children are making a joyful noise unto the Lord, join us in Room 101 from 6:30-

7:00 pm for light-hearted chats.

Thursday Morning Offering

Moms’ Bible Study Join us Thursday mornings, beginning, September 17. The nursery opens at 9:15 am

and discussion starts at 9:30 am. We meet to share in the study of God’s Word and a time of fellowship with

moms. Our first gathering will be around the Word and brunch, so bring a breakfast item to share.

Fellowship Ministries

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

All are welcome to join us the third Monday of each month at 10:30 am in the

Parlor, as we discuss the month’s book and share in fellowship together.

Participants take turns selecting the book for the month and leading discussions.

For 2015-2016 year, we will meet September 21, 2015, October 19, 2015,

November 16, 2015, January 18, 2016, February 15, 2016, March 21, 2016,

April 18, 2016, and May 16, 2016.

For our gathering on September 15, we will discuss the book We Are Our

Mothers’ Daughters by Cokie Roberts. Diaconal Minister Christy Huffman will

lead our discussion.

If you have any questions about the Book Discussion Group, please contact

Christy Huffman at 282-6066.

LUTHERAN CAMPUS MINISTRY

Our University of Richmond and VCU students are back.

We are excited they are joining us for worship.

Each year we provide opportunities for worship, as well as

times of fellowship and Bible study, for our students. We

provide transportation to and from worship for our UR

students through a rotation of van drivers. These individuals

drive the church van to the UR campus picking up students at the Transportation Hub near the Tyler Haynes

Commons, bringing them to Epiphany for worship and returning them to campus following the service. With

the number of volunteers, a driver would need to commit to two to three Sundays a semester.

On Sunday, September 6, we will have a Welcome (Back) Lunch after the late service in the Star Lodge.

If you are willing to serve as a driver or assist with our semester activities, please contact Christy Huffman or

Pastor Joseph at 282-6066

Mary Lee Leigh

Dear Epiphany Lutheran Church,

Thank you so much for the donation of $500. The money is a blessing and came at the right time! We had an

emergency and needed to buy a bed for one of our youth. Additionally, we bought a toddler car seat for one of

our medically fragile youth. Thank you so much for all of your support! We enjoy working with your

congregation.

Sincerely,

Amy Barbour, Richmond Lutheran Family Services Office

Dear Epiphany Family,

We cannot begin to thank you all for the constant support that you all have given us, always, but most

importantly during the past year throughout dad’s (Russell’s) illness and this summer after his death. Your

thoughts, visits, prayers, cards, meals, help with the funeral and reception, and your overall constant support,

friendship, and love make us forever grateful to God and to our Epiphany family for taking care of us through

this hard time.

In the Peace of Christ,

Joan Reynolds; Mike, Leigh, and Sarah Dunavant; Carrie Reynolds; John, Megan, Anna Catherine, and

LAMB’s Basket Food Drive – We will be

handing out grocery bags with a list of needed

food items for The LAMB’s Basket on Sunday,

September 13 immediately following both

services. We hope that you will provide support

either through buying requested groceries or

providing financial support. Needed items

are: Canned Pasta Sauce, Canned Meat,

Canned Vegetables, Canned Fruit, Mac and

Cheese, 16 oz. box of Spaghetti, Cereal, Peanut

Butter, and Grape Jelly. If you wish to

participate, we ask that you bring your donations

to the church by Sunday, October 11. Thank

you so much for your continued support for this

much needed community organization. Any

questions check out our church display or call

Cheryl Hamm at (804) 399-7650.

CARITAS - Our next week is October 17-24 (Congregation Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter)

It is to those who have the most need of us that we ought to show our love more especially.

St. Francis de Sales

We call upon the congregation to welcome our CARITAS guest from

October 17-24. Again, Epiphany will welcome 40 women for which

we will need over 125 members of our congregation to help provide

them with a warm place to sleep, a place to rest, eat, shower, and

even just a warm smile.

We will have many jobs in which members can volunteer for including cooking and/or serving dinner, making

10 lunches, launder towels, play music or any other gift you have to offer. Sign- up sheets go up September

13th.

Confused on how you can help, what specific duties entail or what CARITAS is all about? Come to our

CARITAS boot camp during the Sunday school hour on September 20th and learn all the ins and outs of the

week. Find out how you can best help and what best fits your schedule. Have questions answered.

CARITAS is Richmond's largest emergency shelter, sheltering up to 110 people per night, and over 1,000

people annually. They provide over 90% of the shelter beds available to single

women. The hard work of 15,000 volunteers and 155 host congregations

creates a safe and hospitable place for our most vulnerable citizens.

Contact Beth Barger at 282.6066 or [email protected] for any of the ministries listed below or for

information about additional areas in the life of Epiphany Church.

Sunday Morning Greeter Coordinator Time Commitment: 1-2hours/month

The Evangelism Team is looking for someone to be the coordinator of our Sunday morning greeters. It's a

"behind the scenes" role for a rather visible and important ministry.

*You would be given a list of people who have indicated that they'd like to be a greeter. You are also welcome

to ask additional folks if they'd like to serve as a greeter.

*Three four-month schedules are sent out about a month ahead of time. (Hanne has stamps in the office.)

*Greeter name tags are pulled out the week or two before and placed on the table in the Narthex. Create name

tags for new greeters.

Contact Beth Barger if you are interested in learning more about this ministry.

HHOPE Shopping Assistants

Time Commitment: 2hours/trip 1 trip/month for 1 year

HHOPE is looking for someone to help our Food Bank shopper

on Monday mornings. We end up putting so much in the cart that

a second person is needed to help gather, load and unload the

boxes.

We already have two people who are helping on the second and

fourth Mondays. Would you be willing and available to help on

either the first, third, or fifth Monday of every month?

Meet at the church at 9:45am.

Ride over to CVFB together.

Load car with food.

Unload once you get back to the church and finish up around

12noon.

You may not be needed every time, and we can switch things

around if something comes up with your

schedule. Of course, if you'd like to go more than once a month,

we can look into that, too. :) Contact Beth Barger if you are

interested.

LAMB’s Basket Food Pantry Time Commitment: 3.5hours/day

Epiphany sends volunteers each month to the

Community Food Pantry to help distribute food

(Fridays) and stock the shelves (Wednesdays). To

volunteer, contact Beth or sign up at the Welcome

Desk. For additional information, call the pantry at

565.8007. Inclement weather? Check channel 8 for

closings, or if Henrico schools are closed, then

LAMB’s Basket is closed.

Ministers Wanted - (cont’d)

USHERS NEEDED

As a group, the ushers are very passionate about serving our brothers and sisters in Christ, welcoming guests

and answering any question worshippers may have. It is an easy and great way to impact the lives of our

church family!

As of late, and due to many reasons (age, disabilities/illness, moves, changes of churches), we have lost

several members of the usher team (especially for the late service) which has impacted our ability to schedule

ushers with sufficient time in between assignments. Therefore, we need you and ask that you consider this

opportunity to serve as an usher.

Ushers are scheduled for one month at a time (with a dedicated back-up for weeks when someone is

unavailable) ideally once or twice a year. You can dictate which months you are unable to serve.

Easy-to-complete training is provided (although, if you’ve attended with frequency, you probably already

know the job!) and you would be joining a veteran usher team who can provide “on the job support”.

I invite you to speak to any of the ushers and ask them what’s it’s like, or why they enjoy serving the church in

this capacity.

If you’d like to join our usher team, please contact me at [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration,

Brendan Paget

Requesting Council Member Suggestions from the Congregation
