Well, another summer is behind us and a new season of autumn is upon us. While I will miss the lazy days of

summer and my less-than-strict schedule, I do absolutely love this time of year. I love the cool evenings and

mornings, the changing leaves, the excitement of a new school year...and Sunday School! I love to hear the

sound of the Cherubs and Singing Saints again, the Chancel Choir on Sunday mornings, and the return of

Wednesday evening meals in Price Hall. I always enjoy planting fall blooms, attending fall festivals with the

family, the pumpkin patch, and all of the other MANY activities out there.

As my children begin to discuss their Halloween costumes this year, I am

reminded that Thanksgiving and Christmas will follow close behind...and

Consecration Sunday is right in there with them. Yes, this is the time of

year that you begin to hear from us, the little division of your Stewardship

Team that plans this amazing day that has grown ever so popular over the

past several years. Each year we ask you to consider your blessings and

pray about how you can share your time, talents and financial gifts for the good of

the church as a whole. This is so important for us to do as Christians and is crucial

in helping our church thrive. Recently however, I read an article that really made

me stop and think about our approach to stewardship.

The article is written by Paul Lutter, a visiting instructor at Gustavus Adolphus

College. He is working toward his Ph.D. from Luther Seminary. Here is a condensed version of his article:

The foundational question from which stewardship lives is neither how (or how much) nor why people give

what they do. At its heart, the core question of stewardship is who does the giving in the first place? In other

words, who owns all that we have? God owns all that we have. All of it. And, perhaps even more radically in a

world that is hell bent on individual autonomy, God owns us, too.

Martin Luther on stewardship

Listen to what Martin Luther has to say. In 1529, Luther writes in his Small Catechism in explanation to the

First Article of the Apostles’ Creed (“I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth”), that

God not only creates us, but also, “…God daily and abundantly provides shoes and clothing, food and drink,

house and farm, spouse and children, fields, livestock, and all property — along with all the necessities and

nourishment for this body and life.”

God owns it all because God creates it all, right down to the “shoes and clothing” we wear. This God creates

these things for us not once long ago, but “daily,” Luther says.

Daily, God creates and gives us what we need. And why wouldn’t that be the case — it’s God’s to give. It is

interesting to note that Luther pairs “daily and abundantly,” which suggests that as much and as often as God

“provides” for us at all levels, God never runs out of good things to give us. No, this God who creates all

things, “provides … all the necessities and nourishment for this body and life.”

God never runs out. What if this provided the focus of how we think about and live out stewardship?

I think that if we use this idea in our own stewardship at Epiphany, there is no stopping the

good that we can do and the difference we can make in the life of our beloved church and in

our community.

We are being faced with a lot of changes at Epiphany right now. While I know this is stressful

and exciting all at the same time, maybe part of our metamorphosis should be how we view

stewardship. Let's pray about it.

Over the past six weeks your Epiphany Finance Ministry Team has been working

with the various other ministry teams to develop the 2014 budget. We plan to

distribute the proposed budget to you by early November. In addition, on Sunday

November 10 during the Sunday school hour, in the Parlor, and on Wednesday

November 13 at 7 pm, in the Chapel, you will have the opportunity to ask questions

about the financial plans for 2014.

Annual Congregational Meeting and Luncheon

Save the date! The annual meeting of the congregation of Epiphany Evangelical

Lutheran Church will be on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Price Hall immediately following

the 11 a.m. service. A sign up sheet for the luncheon will be available in the

Commons in October. Please note that childcare will be available during the

meeting.

A portion of the agenda will include the election of Congregational Council

members, the adoption of the 2014 operating budget, as well as information

regarding ongoing church activities, including an update from the Transition Task

Force.

All are invited to a hymn festival featuring the hymns of Martin Luther. This is

a combined effort of all ELCA churches in the Richmond Conference.

Members of Epiphany's choirs will be participating. The festival will be held at

First English Lutheran Church,

1603 Monument Ave, on Sunday, October 13 at 5 pm. All are welcome!

Children's Choir reminders: There is rehearsal each Wednesday night in October at each

group's respective time. Singing Saints and Cherub Choir will participate in worship on

Sunday, October 20.

Brass players - we hope to pull together a group for Reformation Sunday,

October 27. Please contact Kevin if you are available and willing to

participate.

Transition Update:

Thank you for your assistance listing events of significance to you on the

history time-line. On October 6 we will talk about some of these events

and then shift to the “What’s next?” portion of the wall. Our intent is to

identify programs and activities that will enable Epiphany further to live

out the important values that make us a congregation. We may be able to

identify some new directions for the congregation also.

The many skills for pastoral leadership you experienced under Pastor

Price’s leadership guided the congregation to where it is today. The

future portion of the time-line will help identify some leadership skills

needed in the next Senior Pastor if Epiphany is to accomplish new goals

and continue to grow in ministry in the years ahead.

The Transition Task Force will provide the congregation with a survey to identify some skills and gifts you

feel are important for the senior pastor to possess. We hope to make this available in October.

The time-line will remain posted in Price Hall as we continue this process. I hope this will be a simple way to

keep everyone updated on the progress of this process. I realize it seems strange or even confusing to some

members of the congregation. Some elements of the Call Process have changed since the last time Epiphany

called a pastor. The good news is that we are making progress and some of the work compiled by the

task-force at this time also will be of use in the search for a new Associate Pastor.

Thank you for your patience and participation with this important process of calling a new Senior Pastor.

Please remember the congregation in your daily prayers. The Holy Spirit will continue to guide our work as a

congregation in the years ahead as in the years past.

…for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with

many thanksgivings to God.

In the past year, some of our ushers have moved out of town, gone off to

college, or have retired from the ministry. We thank them for their

dedicated service but now Epiphany needs more saints willing to serve as

ushers at our two Sunday morning services or at memorial services during

the week. Ushering is at once among the easiest opportunities to serve our

Lord at Epiphany- you’re going to be at church on Sunday anyway, right?-

but it’s also a high profile ministry and thus an extremely important one.

An usher provides a warm welcome to long time parishioners, helps the

pastors maintain an orderly worship service and is often the first impression

newcomers get to our church family.

We ask you to please prayerfully consider being a part of our ushers team. Should you feel the Holy Spirit

calling you to this ministry, throughout October there will be a sign up sheet on the Worship & Music bulletin

Sunday Morning Offerings—9:45 am Transition Task Force Adult Forum Join us Sunday, October 6, in Price Hall as we

hear and discuss the findings from the History Timeline and What’s Next in our

transition.

"Roots & Practices of Lutheran Christians -Join Pastors Ruppar and Martin, in the Chapel as we continue our

conversations based on the following topics: 1) Who are the Lutherans?, 2) Baptism, 3) Holy Communion, 4)

The Scriptures, 5) The Reformation and 6) The Creeds. This class is ideal for new(er) members to Epiphany

and those who want a refresher on Lutheran beliefs. We use the book Lutheran Christians and Their Beliefs

by Jerry Schmalenberger. Copies are available in the class.

Animate—Bible Join Pastor Bosserman in Price Hall, as we encounter

scripture in new ways. We will explore the following topics with the

help of leading voices of the Christian faith: Cannon, History,

Testaments, Gospels, Genre, Interpretation, and Grace.

Tuesday Morning Offering The Book of Twelve: Minor Prophets in the Old Testament Join us Tuesday mornings, at 10:30 am in the

Chapel. We continue our exploration of the “Minor Prophets” in Old Testament Scripture. We will gain a

foundational understanding of the key people, places, messages, and events of the these prophets, while

building community and deepening faith.

Wednesday Evening Offerings Parent Chat While the children are making a joyful noise unto the Lord, join us in Room 101 from 6:30-7:00

pm for dessert and light-hearted chats.

Thursday Morning Offering Moms’ Bible Study Join us Thursday mornings at 9:30 am in the Chapel. We meet to share in the study of

God’s Word and a time of fellowship with moms. This fall our conversations will be based on “Coffee with

the Savior.” This study explores stories of friendship and accounts of Moses’ relationship with his true Friend,

God. Nursery is provided and opens at 9:15 am.

BIBLE SUNDAY For our Third Graders—Sunday, October 27

On Reformation Sunday, our third graders will be presented their own “used” Bibles at

both services. Parents, please make plans to attend a meeting on Sunday, September 29

at 10:00 am in the Parlor.

At this meeting you will receive your child’s Bible and information on your role in the

Bible presentation. If you are unable to attend, please contact Christy Huffman to

receive your child’s Bible and instructions for Sunday, October 27.

The Bible 101 sessions with children and parents which are typically on the first two

Sundays in November will be postponed until January.12 and 19. Those two Sundays

we will meet in Room 202 at 9:45 am.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS

It has been an exciting month here at Epiphany Lutheran Nursery School. We welcomed

children back on Tuesday, September 3 and it is great to finally get to hear all of them

playing in the classrooms and on the playgrounds. Our year has been off to a great start

with very few tears and lots of happy faces!!

While our enrollment numbers are going up, we still have open spaces our classes for 1 year

olds, 3 year olds, and 4 year olds. There is very limited availability in our 2 year old class.

If you have friends or family members who are still looking for a school this fall, please make sure and tell

them about us! You can keep up to date on what is happening at our website

www.EpiphanyLutheranNurserySchool.com. We are also on Facebook. Be sure to look for Epiphany

Lutheran Nursery School and “Like” us to keep up to date on what is happening in the Education Wing. Make

sure to check out the video we now have on our website as well! It is a nice overview of what we are doing

here at ELNS.

Are you getting ready to do your “Fall cleaning”? Are there things that you are looking to get

out of your house before Christmas? The school is always looking for “new to us” items. We

could use a newer large playhouse for the playgrounds, balls, baby dolls, baby doll clothes,

baby doll accessories, extra sets of clothes from size 2T to size 5 (not too many, just a couple

of sets in each size for boys and girls), and wooden puzzles. If you have items that you think

we might like, please email us at nurseryschool@epiphanyelca.org.

Our Annual Halloween Carnival will be on October 31 this year (this is a change from our

published calendar) and will be a great time for all that attend. We are busy planning for this

great event and will publish information as it becomes available.

Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Holiday Stop & Shop, will be held on

November 8 and 9. We are currently accepting applications from vendors

and starting to organize the book collection for the school book sale that we

do there each year. If you have books that you would like to donate for this,

please email the booster club at elnsboosters@epiphanyelca.org. You can

also put them in the box located just inside the Franklin Street entrance of

the building. If you would like to volunteer for this great event, please stop

by our bulletin board outside the Education Wing for volunteer

opportunities.

We are always looking for new substitute teachers for those times when our teachers have to miss school. If

you are interested in being on our sub list, please get in touch. Feel free to stop by the school anytime! My

office hours are 8 am – 2 pm, Monday-Friday. You can also give me a call at 282-7506.

INTERESTED IN SERVING AS AN ADVISOR TO THE YOUTH GROUP? THINK ABOUT

BECOMING A TIMOTHY MINISTER! WHAT IS A TIMOTHY MINISTER? A Timothy Minister is an adult

volunteer from the congregation who helps support and guides the youth group ministry of the

congregation. Timothy Ministers not only work closely with Pastor Phillip to design, plan, supervise,

and chaperone youth activities, but they also become important mentors for our youth in their faith

formation.

One of Epiphany’s Timothy Minsters, Jackie Mitchell, recently stepped back this summer after serving

for a number of years in this vital ministry that supports Epiphany’s youth group. In the time that she

has served, Jackie (along with her husband, Tod) has watched dozens of Epiphany youth move

through the youth group, from 7th grade to high school graduation. Her three children—Eric, Kristina,

and Jamie—were all active in the youth group. Here, in a brief interview, Jackie reflects on her

experiences in this ministry.

Jackie, how long have you served as an advisor for the youth group? For about 4 1/2 years.

Did anyone recruit you to serve in this capacity? Why did you want to serve as a Timothy Minister? I

was recruited by Pastor Mark [England]. I decided to get involved because my children were part of youth

group.

What has been your favorite memory (event, day, conversation, etc.) of serving with the youth group?

The ELCA [National] Youth Gathering in New Orleans in 2009. It was incredible to see so many youth

together for service, faith, and fellowship.

What has been the most challenging aspect of serving as a Timothy Minister? During the interim after

Pastor Mark left, we Timothy Ministers had to keep Epiphany Youth Group going. It was challenging to keep

morale up, but with God’s help we managed to get much accomplished and many youth involved. We really

got to know the other Timothy Ministers and youth through this experience.

What do you think is important for the youth to understand about the life of faith after they leave the

youth group? That God is always with them. To keep their faith and continue to serve others. To be accepting

of all and to share their faith.

What do you think the congregation should know about Epiphany’s youth ministry? How through

Epiphany Youth Group the youth build great friendships that they keep after high school.

Now that your time as a Timothy Minister is coming to

a close, what aspect of working so closely with our youth

do you think you’ll miss the most? I’ll miss getting to

know the youth individually. I really enjoyed spending time

with them...they have great insight and lots to share.

From October 19th until 26th Epiphany will be hosting 40

women thru CARITAS. This is our 20th year sponsoring this

ministry. Once again we as a congregation will be opening

our arm to these women providing a safe place to rest and

sleep, a warm dinner, a warm shower, cleansed clothes, a bag

lunch, breakfast, some light entertainment and most

importantly compassion. We will provide for them for 7

nights. This will require over one hundred members to

volunteer their time. Please consider what gifts you have to

offer during this week. Sign up sheets are in the commons for

a variety of jobs. Any question please call

The three Women’s Circles are: Margaret Miller Circle, Clara Sullivan Circle and Heidi Michelsen Circle.

These three circles of women are part of the WELCA (Women of the Evangelical

Lutheran Church) and participate in various missions such as stewardship, growth,

community, and action.

Dear friends at Epiphany,

This note is long overdue. I want to say thank you for all the support and love you have

shown me. I cannot tell you individually what your thoughts, prayers, and gifts have

meant to me. Flowers that were altar flowers have come, it seems, just when I am

feeling unloved and useless. Then someone will bring them and I feel much better!

up in the Commons, and call the pantry at 565-8007 for additional information. Inclement weather? Check

channel 8 for closings or if Henrico schools are closed, then the LAMB's Basket is closed.
