BUILDING A “LOW CARBON” SOCIETY

We need to change from a society with a high fossil ener-

gy and natural resource consumption to a more energy-

efficient and resource-efficient society: namely, a “low

carbon” society.

This energy and environmental transition calls for the in-

volvement of all societal stakeholders, namely: local gov-

ernments, companies, associations, public organisations,

citizens, etc. The country takes action by providing strong

support for technological, social and economic innovation.

Spurred by government policies, French companies have

embarked on the challenge of innovation by proposing

solutions that will improve our quality of life, create wealth,

jobs and strengthen the social bond.

INNOVATION AT THE SERVICE OF THE CLIMATE

The technologies used to produce or consume can all be

improved to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Innovations can lead to a technological breakthrough to

consume less and produce more energy;

They may equally change the way we organise our activi-

ties, with digital tools helping us to optimise our consump-

tion and movements;

They will bring about new behaviours like facilitating

contacts between suppliers and consumers.

Let’s enter tomorrow’s “low carbon” world!

Innov’Climat is presented by the Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable

Development and Energy (MEDDE), the General Investment Commis-

sion (CGI) and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency

(ADEME).

FINANCING INNOVATION FOR THE COMMON GOOD

With the Investments for the Future Program - PIA,

the State set up an effective industrial policy instrument

to meet the challenge of competitiveness and trigger off

the emergence of a new growth model. It acts as a cata-

lyst of green growth and allows the competitive industries

of tomorrow to develop, by financing the transition from

the innovation phase to the marketing phase: this is often a

risky passage that usually requires a substantial amount of

capital.

These innovations are a fantastic driver of economic and

social development. By 2020, they may create more than

10,000 jobs and a turnover of 10 billion euros.

KEY INNOVATION SECTORS

Renovation of old buildings and construction of new

more high-performance buildings.

Less energy consuming and GHG emitting means of

transport or better ways of transportation without using

personal cars.

More efficient renewable energies deployed on land and

in the sea that swell up their share in the energy pool.

Smart electrical systems help to better manage energy

from producer to consumer, balance supply and demand,

and involve all users.

The circular economy reduces the quantity of waste and

saves raw materials and energy.

Harnessing waste-heat to multiply performances

The electricity production cycle wastes 2/3 of

the energy it uses. Atoll Energy reclaims at least 1/3 energy by harnessing waste-heat and turning it into several utilities: heating, cooling and fresh water generation.

Atoll Energy engineers all-in-one power and util-ities solutions. Performances are multiplied by

unique energy architectures regulated by in-house

software to ensure a smart management of electri-

cal and thermal power. The French Renewable and

Atomic Commission, CEA, has been operating the

first of its kind solution for over a year, it reduc-

es energy consumption by 35%. Atoll Energy now

proposes its solutions with performances bonds

while the R&D focus is to hybridize wasted and

renewable heat.

Located in Provence, Atoll Energy offers unique

designs based on tried and tested machines. From feasibility to commissioning and maintenance, Atoll Energy ensures the savings with perfor- mances contracts.

Micro-Hydrokinetic Turbines:

an innovative solution

Roughly 1.3 billion people around the world have

no access to energy and have to use diesel gener-

ators for electricity production. However, most of

them live near rivers, which can be a potential free

and huge source of energy.

Funded with FASEP program Green Innovation,

the MOULENDA project aims to increase access to

energy services for an off-grid community, thanks

to an innovative electrical generating system us-

ing run-of-river energy. Micro-hydrokinetic power

provides a low cost electricity to population and re-

duces greenhouse effect gases. In Moulenda, it is

envisaged creation of a micro-electrical grid (6kW)

supplied by 12 floating EcoCinetic turbines.

Launched in 2013 and after field missions to eval-

uate the potential, the project will soon move

into the operational phase. Actually, turbines are

manufactured and installation will begin in the first

quarter of 2016.

Harnessing energy

by storing heat

Achieving the energy transition for green growth

will require the formulation of eco-efficient heat

storage solutions to improve energy efficiency

on an industrial scale and incorporate renewable

energies.

In 2015, heavy industries lost more than

3500 TWhth/year of “fatal heat” (T>200°C). Har-

nessing this energy will help to:

Improve industrial energy efficiency from 20 to 40%.

Prevent the disposal of 2450 Mteq of CO2 yearly.

Generate 200 billion euros yearly.

Eco-Tech Ceram is designing a robust, plug and

play, modular heat storage solution, using heat

storage materials obtained from recycling the cir-

cular economy. It is therefore an eco-efficient solu-

tion that will help to enhance regulations.

A developing industrial sector

of excellence

The offshore wind energy sector has experienced

considerable growth in recent years. Offshore wind

farms benefit from winds that are more powerful

and more consistent than those onshore wind farms

are exposed to.

Haliade* 150-6MW is one of the most powerful and

innovative wind turbines ever installed offshore.

238 Haliades* will be installed in the Courseulles-

sur-Mer, Fécamp and Saint-Nazaire wind farms,

with commissioning as from 2020. To meet the

needs of a booming international market, GE has

implemented an ambitious industrial plan com-

bining the construction of four dedicated plants

manufacturing Haliade* wind turbines with the cre-

ation of an engineering centre in Nantes dedicated

to marine energies.

Two of these production facilities are already in

operation at Saint-Nazair ADEME has contributed

33% of the financing for these plants. They have

a production capacity of 100 wind turbines a year.

Operating underwater generators

in actual conditions

Tidal energy from ocean currents is renewable, in-

exhaustible and predictable over the long term. The

ENGIE project aims at designing, constructing and

operating over a 20 year period, a pilot farm of

4 underwater generators developed and manufac-

tured by GE. The farm will supply electricity to a

population of roughly 10,000.

Operating the pilot farms of some units in actu-

al conditions is a prerequisite to confirm the per-

formance of the technologies retained and the

economic viability of the sector. The underwater

generators will be connected to an underwater

power station from which a single transmission ca-

ble will run towards the shores and the power grid.

This environmentally-friendly and seafarer-friendly

project will undergo an ambitious and comprehen-

sive environmental follow-up.

Located at Raz Blanchard (Alderney Race) off the

coast of Normandy, the NEPTHYD project paves

the way for large-scale industrial deployment in

France and abroad. It will help to establish this sec-

tor across the land.

Save fossil fuels recycling

PET bottles

The country is the third world consumer of PET

plastic bottles (polyethylene terephthalate). How-

ever, waste treatment processes are not adapted

and plastic is released into environment or landfill.

One of the world’s largest recyclers of food-con-

tact-grade PET opened in 2006 in Toluca, around

60km from Mexico. In 2014, 75 000 tons of PET

were collected resulting in a production of 50 000

tons of recycled plastic. Optical sorting equipment

was provided by Pellenc ST and installed in 2010.

And thanks to satisfactory return on investment,

PETStar has decided to double its sorting line with

the latest generation of Pellenc machines. But it re-

duces also the carbone footprint of bottles made

with recycled plastic. Indeed, we need only 7MJ/kg

to produce recycled PET against 84MJ/kg for virgin

PET.

Since 2001, Pellenc ST is an high tech company

leader in the waste sorting and recycling industry.

It designs, produces and sells optical sorting equip-

ment and optimizes its customers’ sorting processes.

Power in all meridians

A real ecological alternative to thermal genera-

tor has now been developed: it allows to provide

power anywhere and in any circumstances, using

renewable energies and innovative storage tech-

niques such as hydrogen.

PowiDian has developed a standalone power pro-

duction and storage station, ecological, highly reli-

able, true concentrate of advanced technology and

software intelligence. The station manage every

type of renewable energy and solve the issue of

intermittent power sources in particular thanks to

hydrogen. Power may then be produced anytime, in

any circumstances. PowiDian scales its solution to

the real need of each client to provide tailor-made

stations which offer a rapid return on investment.

PowiDian has just installed a world premiere: a hy-

drogen production and storage station at 2,600

meters to power the refuge du Palet (National Park

of Vanoise): hikers have now an unlimited access to

a clean power, whatever the weather conditions.

Towards a Silicon wafer

Industry

In a fast-growing global market, there is a need

to speed up the spread of solar energy and make

provision for growth on the global market by of-

fering a turnkey solution that is energy-efficient,

resource-efficient and CO2 emissions-efficient.

The overarching aim of PV800 Export in France is

to develop a competitive silicon wafer industry for

the generation of electric power through renewable

solar sources.

Silicon ingots are conventionally obtained through

chemical processes. The project aims at produc-

ing solar grade silicon from a type of purified met-

allurgical silicon with a lower energy penalty and

environmental impact.

Launched in 2011, the project comprises a R&D

phase followed by a prototyping and thereafter, in-

dustrial demonstration. PV800 Export equipment

manufacturers are spread out across several re-

gions, thereby giving the project a decentralised

scope nationwide.

Harnessing energy from currents

The ebb and flow of the tides across the coasts of

the world and Europe produce powerful currents

that can be harnessed to generate electricity. The

global generation potential from this resource

stands at an “installable” capacity of roughly

50 GW.

Sabella D10 harnesses hydrokinetic energy to ge-

nerate electricity. It is designed to be reliable and

robust, at a competitive cost. Mounted in the ocean

at a depth of 25 to 50m, where tidal currents ex-

ceed 2m/s, it is invisible from the surface with a tur-

bine that generates up to 1 MW with its 10m diam-

eter rotor, and neither disrupts navigation, fishing

activities nor affects the surrounding marine life.

The project is giving rise to a promising industrial

sector driven by a global market, especially in the

remote island areas.

The demonstrator was launched at Brest on 24 April

2015, lowered into the water in the Fromveur Pas-

sage in Brittany in the summer of 2015 and thereaf-

ter, connected to the island of Ushant in the month

of September. It should be dismantled after a year

of trial.

Floating offshore wind turbines

In France depths greater than 30 meters are

reached too close to the coast for offshore foun-

dation based wind turbines development. Floating

wind turbines offer a solution to this problem par-

ticularly on the Mediterranean coast.

With its vertical architecture, the VERTIWIND

wind turbine, introduces a huge innovation in the

marine wind energy sector.

The product marks a technological breakthrough

in so far as it provides an energy cost comparable

to nuclear energy and 30% cheaper than the com-

petition. This technology can achieve better per-

formance, a power greater than 5 MW and a 15%

increase in electricity production. Its optimized

floater allows simplified offshore operations with

access to up to 200 meters depth areas.

Since May 2014, a 600kW prototype is already

being tested onshore at Fos-sur-Mer. The project

will increase the wind offshore energy market

and will help establish an innovative, job creating

industrial sector.

Recycling Composites

The fast-growing composite materials is seeking

long-lasting solutions to manage its production

waste and end-of-life products.

So far, there was no satisfactory solution: co-com-

bustion in the cement industry or “materials” recy-

cling were still in their infancy: They are “thermo-

sets” and their crushing and processing were costly.

AB VAL COMPOSITES is testing the development

of this waste on an innovative industrial line. The

industrial optimisation of the recycling process

is nearing completion. Tests on the mechanical

properties of the material will help to develop

100% recycled or recyclable products that can be

used to supplement or replace materials like con-

crete or wood.

The project requires the establishment of a collec-

tion sector and the diversion of composites from

being buried in industrial landfill sites. It is capable

of giving the French composites industry a signifi-

cant edge in global competition, by demonstrating

the recyclability of waste in a practical, economic

and operational manner.

Producing liquid biomethane

from biogaz

Biogas produced by biodegradable matter from

treatment plants is a resource that can be deve-

loped and used locally. It is a sustainable option,

rich in methane and readily available around local

fuel consumption systems.

Thanks to an integrated upgrading and liquefac-

tion process, BioGNVAL aims at transforming the

biogas obtained from treatment wastewater into

liquid methane, a renewable and easily storable

energy. The project consists in designing, con-

structing and operating a bio-LNG industrial pro-

duction demonstrator; making use of the biofuel

by streamlining its storage, transportation and dis-

tribution logistics, and equally making use of the

liquid CO2 obtained from the cryogenic processing

of the biogas.

The emergence of a renewable energy production

sector will put bio-LNG on the map compared

with other fossil fuels with a global potential,

especially diesel. It is envisioned that optimum use

will be in long-distance transportation of goods.

Reducing GHG with Microorganisms

During the last 50 years, agricultural soils have lost 1/3 of their humus, of their carbon, due to the loss of soil life, to over use of chemicals and to heavy soil work. Microorganisms producing humus are a solution to reverse that phenomenon.

The aim of Marcel Mézy® Technologies is to devel-op the natural fertility of their soils by producing humus. These technologies enables to divide by 2 the use of chemical inputs (fertilizers & pesticides) and thus their GHG emissions, too. They are also working on all types of organic matter, especially manure and slurry, by recycling them 2 times quicker into humus.

These technologies have been used for 30 years by over 10 000 farmers in France and in the world, fix-ing carbon and nitrogen from the air, 10 to 40 t C/ha, as much as a forest!

Collecting, regenerating and using

Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB)

PVB is a material found in shatterproof glass (car

windscreens, glass windows, etc...) with a current

recycling rate of next to zero. Each year, dozens of

thousands of tonnes are dumped as waste.

Several players in the plastic processing sector find

the physical properties of PVB quite interesting but

virgin resin is quite expensive and therefore limits

its use to applications with high added value like

production of shatterproof glass.

PVB RECYCLING is aimed at industrialising a PVB

regeneration process by testing its compatibility

in several applications, in addition to or replace-

ment of other resins. A PVB waste recovery sec-

tor will substantially improve the recycling rate of

end-of-life vehicles.

Transforming this resource into a raw material will

help to cut down imports and generate industrial

activity in the Cambrai region. The technology can

be replicated in areas with high quantities of PVB

waste.

Kite-propelled ships

Kite-towing technology will cut down ship fuel

consumption by harnessing wind as source of

energy. This will equally cut down greenhouse gas

emissions accordingly.

Over a three-year period, Beyond the Sea intends

to design an automatic management system for a

200m2 kite equipped with a launcher/recuperator

and an automatic pilot. Over the next four years,

800 to 1600m2 wings will equip very large ships,

nally validate the operationalisation of the model.

Adaptable on all kinds of ships, both sailing or

motor-driven, the surface area of the sail will de-

pend on the size of the ship to ensure full and safe

High-performance Compact Insulators

The global market for insulation materials is set to account for 50 to 60 billion euros by 2020 to 2025. Due to their high technical performance, sili-ca aerogels are expected to complete and compete with conventional thermal insulators.

ENERSENS is developing and industrialising the production of hyper-insulators made from silica aerogels. Initially used in the aerospace industry, they are very light and very finely structured ma-terials that prevent air molecules trapped in the materials from exchanging energy. The project is an integral part of the building energy management renovation project that seeks to carry out a large-scale rehabilitation of the current infrastructure and has set out ambitious performance targets for new infrastructure.

Enersens has already developed two types of hyper-insulators: Kwark®, aerogel pellets used as additives for purposes like in insulating and breath-able façade renderings; and Skogar®, panels and paddings that insulate 2 to 3 times more than current insulators.

Unique sustainable ecodesign

Worldwide government agencies, public and pri-

atmospheric pollution. Thousands of air quality

analyzers already in use are often direct or indirect

importantly remaining environmentally friendly.

Over 35,000 Environnement S.A’s analyzers equip

A real-time multimodal GPS

Movement is increasingly becoming a major chal-

from the excessive use of cars to travel to the city

centre and even cover very short distances within

the city centre.

Although the city and suburbs of Lyon are supplied

by a very vast transportation system and the net-

works properly linked up, information is still frag-

mented amongst the different organisations (Local

Government, SNCF, General Councils, Sytral, State,

Highway companies, Grand Lyon, etc.). OPTIMOD

LYON aims at meeting the expectations of users

in terms of information, and to increase and speed

up the modal shift from the personal car to other

means of transport, and enable local governments

to better organise their transportation systems.

The project is currently experimenting ground-

creation of a single multisource data warehouse has

helped to develop a real-time multimodal information

Optimod’Lyon has helped to design the world’s

first real-time multimodal GPS, providing informa-

Reversible solar air-conditioning

A major constraint on the growth of solar energy is

the gap between generation times when the sun-

shine is at its highest and periods of peak demand

that instead occur in the evening or during win-

ter. The need for refreshment and air-conditioning

coincide with the times when solar energy is most

available.

The aim of the SCRIB project is to develop a highly

energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly re-

versible solar air-conditioning system to meet the

thermal needs of industrial and tertiary buildings

over a broad range of temperatures, running from

-60°C to +200°C.

The project proposes a comprehensive solution

The project cost allows for it to be developed on a

With regard to the high urbanization in China (25 millions new urban citizens per year), this is a pilot project in the context of the twelth five year plan (2011 to 2015) : a 16% decrease in chi-

nese economy energy intensity and a 17% decrease

in carbon intensity.

The project consists in the energy retrofit of 25 buildings (offices and administration, hos-pitals and universities) belonging to the City of Wuhan totaling a retrofitted area of 1 435 000m2, it aims a global reduction of 15 000 tCO

2éq per year.

The principle of Energy Performance Contracts is to

share the risk of not reaching the targeted energy

savings between the project owner and the Con-

tractor. Energy savings are measured and verified

during two years after retrofit and are compared

to contractual terms. The average decrease of en-

ergy consumption is about 30%, in a 7 to 8 years

payback. Energy cost savings aim at paying the re-

furbishment loan. This approach also includes the

training of operating and maintenance municipality

staff, the public display of the results and a coopera-

tion with european cities (Bordeaux, Lille, Echirolles,

Energy Cities).
