The Eye of the Tiger News - Volume 2 September 17-21, 2018 Mission Statement The John D. Headmaster/Administration  Message of the Week 

 Now that we are entering our second full week of 

school, the admin team will begin to conduct Informative Learning Walks (IWLs). ILWs consist of

 Teaching and Learning    

 Our instructional focus for the 2018-19 School Year is implementing evidence-based reading and problem-solving strategies that enable students to successfully engage in cognitively demanding tasks.  

● Seeking Volunteer Academic Mentors for BPS Schools: Academic mentors work one-on-one or with a group of 2-4 students for an hour a week during the school day. As an academic mentor, you can help support a student's academic and personal growth just by spending time with them in the classroom. For more information and to apply click here. Contact for additional information: Boston Partners in Education  

● Apply to join the next Cohort of BPS WEOC Program: The BPS Women Educators of Color (WEOC) Leadership Program is a year-long program designed to increase engagement, retention, and leadership rates for BPS Women staff of color.  ● BPS Healthy and Sustainable School 

Resources: The newly redesigned bostongreenschools.org website provides BPS school leaders, teachers, students, and district staff with operational and curriculum resources for creating healthy and sustainable schools.  Family and Community Engagement 

 ● Coffee hour is presented by our wonderful 

parents every Friday from 7am-8am in September. Please join the Administration and the Guidance Department in the Fishbowl for coffee.

Mass Insight AP English  Saturday Session: 

 The First AP English Literature and AP English Language Saturday Session will take place at the O’Bryant this Saturday, September 22, 2018.   

 Student Extracurricular Opportunities 

 ● Looking for an opportunity to meet new people? 

Would you like to become more involved in the O’Bryant community? Attend the Sixth Annual Team, Club, and Organization Information and Sign-Up Fair on Friday, September 21st from 2:15 pm - 3:30 pm in the 2nd floor cafeterias. Flyer for posting in classroom. 

● Actors’ Shakespeare Project: Youth Macbeth. September 17 - December 16; Mondays and Wednesdays, 5 - 8 pm and Saturdays 11 am - 3 pm (Performances the week of December 10). WHERE: The Charlestown Working Theater. Just off the Sullivan Square stop on the Orange Line. WHO: Any youth with an interest in trying out acting or a backstage role. No past theater experience is required! And please do not let the tuition amount be a hindrance for any student; full scholarships are available. MORE INFO: ASP Youth Programs 

 

● 2nd Annual BPS Attendance Symposium, 9/27: Please join us for the 2nd Annual BPS Attendance Symposium. Headlined by keynote speaker, Robert Balfanz, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University, this free event features actionable content to help educators, community stakeholders and parents improve student attendance across BPS. ● STRIVE! Supportive Trauma Interventions Educators , 11/1-11/2, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. This PD addresses the lack of structured opportunities in the classroom and empowers educators by enhancing their understanding of trauma and its impact on learning and behavior, and creates a supportive learning environment that reduces stigma for children with trauma histories and associated behavioral challenges. ● Bullying Intervention Specialist Training, 10/3-10/4, 12/6-12/7, 1/30-1/31, 3/7-⅜. Succeed Boston is offering trainings on bullying prevention and intervention. The 12 hr, two day trainings will be held quarterly during SY18-19; participants will be certified as a Bullying Intervention Specialist. Current Specialists must take a 2 hr refresher for the latest info on the topic. Hours are 8:30 am to 2:30 pm at 515 Hyde Park Avenue, Roslindale. Learn more here. ● Fall 2018 Behavior Management Series (5 sessions), 10/16, 10/30, 11/13, 11/27 & 12/11; 5 to 7 pm; Bolling Building 6th floor  

● This 5 part series is appropriate for classroom teachers (general education and special education), paraprofessionals, building behavior support staff, and other educators that have some basic understanding of Behavioral Principles and want to learn more.  

● Attendees will be able to operationally define target behaviors, use data collection methods, interpret behavior data and identify the function of a behavior, develop a behavior support plan, implement a function-based

 Ms. Nguyen just graduated from the College of 

the Holy Cross and double majored in Anthropology & Asian Studies. She was a 

tutor and a Site-Director for ‘Let’s Get Ready’. She likes to color and paint 

although she can’t draw at all. She wants to be able to support all of the students at O’B figure out the next step after graduation, feel comfortable in 

advocating for yourself, and learn about the countless possibilities that are available. So stop by if

 Recent Highlights: Varsity Football (September 14): O’Bryant 34 - Madison Park 6 The Tigers redeemed themselves for last season’s loss by defeating our neighbor, Madison Park last Friday afternoon. Sophomore, Javon Milton scored three touchdowns and Senior, Anthony Francis and Sophomore Kerlens Jeanty also scored. After allowing a first half touchdown on a broken play, O’Bryant’s defense shutdown Madison Park the rest of the game.   Girls Varsity Soccer (September 10): O’Bryant 3 - Mt. Alvernia 0; (September 14): O’Bryant 1 - Burke 0 In two strong showings last week, the Lady Tigers defeated Mt.
