Also coming up within the next couple weeks is the 5 th Grade Activities Skating Event at Orbit (2/2), the start of Leapin’ into Literature (during the lunch hour), Family Science Night (2/10 and 2/24), and our PTA Valentine’s Day parties (2/13). Thanks to the PTA for organizing so many wonderful activities for our students. On Tuesday, January 20th, staff had the opportunity to take part in some important training sessions about high quality teaching. Teachers and staff had a menu of options to choose from to help them grow as professionals including training regarding the up- coming PARCC test, our new Math in Focus curricular materials, legal issues facing education today, web resources available through our Reach for Reading curricular materials, differentiated instruction, social/emotional learning, and more. The training was highly beneficial, and we appreciate the community’s support in keeping students home for the day while staff members have time to receive professional development. As a school, the Fairview staff is always looking for ways to im- prove. One way we become better is through professional learn- ing, as mentioned above. FROM THE NURSE…. February is Dental Health Month. Help keep those pearly whites at their best! 1. It is recommended to brush your teeth at least twice a day and visit your dentist twice a year.

2. Teeth are for chewing food, not ripping price tags off clothes or opening things. 3. 40% of dental injuries in adolescents occur while playing sports. Consider wearing a mouth guard. 4. Good dental hygiene reduces the amount of bacteria in your blood. 5. Snacking on carrots, celery, and apples helps clear away the debris, leaving cleaner teeth. 6. Toothbrushes should be re-placed every 2-3 months, and after a cold or Strep throat. Bacteria can plant on the toothbrush leading to re-infection.

Come prepared for outdoor recess during the win-ter months. The students go out if the temperature

(real feel with wind chill) is above 16 degrees. Students that do not have snow pants, boots or

gloves will be restricted to the pavement and not allowed in the snow during recess.

Be in the know...District shares information from local organizations

District 57 families are fortunate to live in a community that offers so many opportunities for children! Please see the back page in this week's packet that provides links to information about upcoming registration deadlines and events. The District administration office is pleased to share this information from local organizations.

REMINDERS FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE

If a student is absent due to illness, any homework request must be made first thing in the morning when the student is called out absent. There may be a specific classroom policy regarding this, so please check with your child’s teacher.

If a student will be absent because of vacation plans, teachers may or may not be able to provide assignments in advance. A minimum of one week’s notice is re-quired before your vacation begins. Requests must be made in writing to the teacher.

Please help your child be organized in the morning before they come to school.

Although we are happy to help your child be successful throughout the day, we need to protect the classroom environment with as few interruptions as possible. Calls home for forgotten lunches and eyeglasses will be permitted.

If your child has something in their lunch that requires a spoon or fork, please remember to place one in their lunchbox. We did have a small supply of disposable utensils, but they are now gone.

ANSWERS TO MRS. VISSER’S MATH MESSAGE

1. Two—the apples you took 2. A fifty-cent piece and a nickel (one is not a nickel,

but the other one is!) 3. The two men were not playing against each other.

A Message from Your Superintendent

As we plan for the future, we identify the challenges, threats and trends that District 57 is facing today and will likely face

in the years to come. This includes the upcoming PARCC Assessment, buildings operating at capacity, financial

uncertainty and new educational standards that could require more curriculum changes. These are some of the issues I

have identified in this year’s Environmental Scan. Developing the scan is the first step in our strategic planning process. It

helps us establish the District's goals and what it will take to achieve them. I presented the scan at the last School Board

meeting, and I’d like to make you aware of some of the major issues:

Our District is required to start giving the new PARCC Assessment on March 9. We’ve done our best to prepare

students for the test, and we’ve addressed technology issues so we can administer it. But we still have concerns

about the test, including the significant time required. Also, we feel the test might not accurately portray our

students’ abilities and knowledge of Common Core curriculum. The sample questions are complicated, and the

digital format could be challenging for young students. In 2010, 23 states, including Illinois, had signed on to

administer PARCC. That number has dropped to 11. Illinois is still on board for this year, but I question the long-

term viability of the test.

District 57 enrollment continues to increase, and our buildings are operating very near capacity. We continue to

monitor class size, but we are currently back to the staffing plan we had prior to the 2011 staffing cuts.

The state has adopted new physical education standards. We are reviewing PE curriculum to determine if

revisions are needed. In addition, the state has notified the District that 2015-2016 will be the last year for the PE

waiver and we will need to respond to this, another unfunded mandate by ISBE.

New national music and visual arts standards were published in 2014. If Illinois adopts these standards, we might

need to make art and music curriculum changes by grade level.

A state committee is reviewing current social studies standards and will make recommendations about possible

changes. This could be the District’s next major curriculum overhaul.

We feel there is a need for additional math and science instructional time at the middle school, but that requires a

significant financial commitment. Due to uncertainties with general state aid and other funding sources, we will

postpone this effort.

The demand for personal learning devices and mobile classroom technology is increasing, with the explosion of

technology-based curriculum. As we navigate through the rapid changes, we must consider online testing

requirements, infrastructure updates and the need to replace our computer labs with mobile technology.

Senate Bill 16 will affect the overall dollars received by the state for special education expense reimbursements

and general state aid. It is currently stalled in Springfield but will be implemented in some form. The CPI for

2014 was at 0.8 percent, the second lowest in the past 50 years. Tax objections and unfunded mandates continue.

These and other factors mean that District 57’s economic landscape is still fragile. Cost containment measures and

efficiencies must be maintained.

These are some of the issues that will figure into the annual update of the District's Strategic Plan, which Administration

will present to the Board in May. Click here to see the complete Environmental Scan, or go to the Board Documents

section of the District website.

Kindergarten Enrollment

District 57 is utilizing an enrollment and registration process for kindergarten for the 2015-

2016 school year. There are three components to this process: an online portion beginning on January 5th,

enrollment at Westbrook School beginning January 20 and an online registration in May. In order to enroll in

kindergarten, children must be five years old by September 1, 2015. All District 57 kindergarten students

attend Westbrook School, 103 South Busse Road.

January Enrollment

Online Pre-Enrollment Intake

Our Online Intake is accessible to parents on our District and Westbrook websites to submit basic

information and download forms of interest. This required, online component allows for a more efficient

experience during our in-person enrollment portion.

In-Person Enrollment

For the second portion of this process, parents will need to come to Westbrook School

between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. During this time, parents will be required to bring in your child’s original

birth certificate and proof of residency: state-issued picture ID, two different current utility bills for two

consecutive recent months and either a copy of a lease, monthly mortgage statement or current tax bill.

Incoming students need not be present.

May Registration

Parents who have completed the enrollment process in and proven residency will be allowed to take

part in the district online registration scheduled for May. This step will give kindergarten parents a chance to

review and update information collected, as well as pay necessary fees. Additional information about May

Registration will be sent out at a later date.

Circle of Friends Registration 2015/16 Our Circle of Friends Pre-School Program is beginning registration for the 2015/16 school year. This program provides a naturalistic early childhood environment that is rich in language and literacy experiences and recognizes children as active learners. Our AM and PM sessions will include children ages 3 to 5 (multi-age/multi-ability). Every consideration will be given to AM/PM requests. Spots are limited and students will be enrolled using a lottery system. Only residents of District 57 will be accepted into the program. On February 9 and 10, 2015, parents will receive a phone call confirming or denying acceptance into the program. If denied, parents may choose to have their child put on a waiting list. Written verification will follow. An application is complete only when a completed application form, a completed Home Language Survey, an original birth certificate (will copy and return original), and a registration fee of $100 are all received in our office.
