If you start living by that system you will need to perfectly keep all of the laws all of the time. 4 This will cut you off from Christ. You who seek righteousness through keeping the law have missed out on God’s grace.

Now, where were we…

You were called to experience freedom, brothers and sisters. It is not a kind of freedom that sanctions increased human indulgence but a freedom that enables you to serve each other in love.

The law is actually fulfilled in a single command: love your neighbour as yourself. 15 But if you keep on biting and devouring one another as you are doing there may soon be nothing left.

What the sinful nature wants is totally opposed to what the Spirit wants and vice versa. They are opposed to each other. When you operate by the Spirit you will not end up fulfilling destructive desires.

3. Holy Tension

If you are being led by the Spirit you don’t need to be controlled by religious rules.

The activities of the sinful nature are clear and obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasure, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I told you about these before. I also said to you that people who continue to live their lives like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

On the other hand, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 humility and self control. There is no religious ritual that opposes these things.

Those who belong to Christ have crucified the sinful nature with all of its passions and desires. 25 If we have new life by the Spirit, we should continue to be guided by the same Spirit. 26 We should not become conceited and end up provoking and envying one another.
