FAMILIAR

FACE IN ATHLETICS

Steve Shelley, new Athletic Director, has been a longtime supporter

of Casady School and a part of the Casady family as a student, athlete,

parent, and coach. “My family has been involved with Casady since 1961,

and athletics is our passion,” Shelley said. He joined the Casady faculty

in 1981 as a math and physical education teacher before becoming

Director of Development in 1983, Business Manager in 1987, Assistant

Headmaster and Chief Financial Officer in 2000.

Steve participated as a student athlete competing in football,

basketball and baseball. As a parent, he cheered on his sons Ryan, Jason,

Bart and Scott. “As a graduate and current parent, Mr. Shelley brings a

deep commitment to our school, a passion for athletics and a drive to

ensure that we continue to improve and enhance our sports program

for the benefit of our students and our community at large,” said Head

of School Christopher C. Bright. During the 2009-2010 season, Steve was

the Head Varsity Baseball Coach, Varsity Basketball Assistant and ninth

grade Basketball Coach. His son Bart is following in his footsteps. Bart

coached a Casady sixth-grade basketball and baseball team in 2009-

2010.

“It will be a privilege for me to work with the entire school

community to sustain the excellence in athletics, which so many have

worked passionately to build over the past 63 years...and enthusiastically

embrace each success!” Shelley said.  The athletic program at Casady

School offers more activities than any program in the entire state of

Oklahoma. The word “achievement” is the theme that Shelley wants to

see resonate in each program. Fall sports include boys and girls cross

country, girls field hockey, boys football, and boys and girls volleyball.

1. Power Camp brought a total of 104 Middle and Upper Division

students to Casady’s campus for a seven-week camp offering classes such

as Fit & Tone, Middle Division Mini-Camp and Upper Division Combine.

The motto for this year’s camp was “Hard Work Is My Talent.”

2. Head Football Coach Koby Scoville and Middle School football coach

Gary Woods offered a four-day football camp for nearly 80 campers.

The camp had special guest appearances by Buffalo Bills and former

Oklahoma State linebacker Donovan Woods, former San Francisco and

Oklahoma State wide receiver Rashaun Woods and New Orleans and

former Oklahoma State wide receiver D’Juan Woods. The camp focused

Casady Athletics program was filled with plenty of excitement this summer. Besides the traditional seven weeks of Power Camp with Coach Zaga, many students competed in summer leagues, team camps and individual camps.

Edmond, Putnam City, Midwest City, Piedmont, and as far as Washington,

Oklahoma.

3. Baseball had its own summer league team with 13 players that

competed in Home-and-Home doubleheaders against Jones, OCS,

Piedmont, St. Mary’s and Yukon. The team also competed in the Jones

Tournament and finished the summer with a 7-9 record.

4. The Oklahoma summer brought the heat along with the Oklahoma

City Thunder to Casady’s campus. The Casady Athletic Program joined

forces with our hometown NBA franchise, Oklahoma City Thunder, to

host a youth basketball camp. Participants from age five to 15 spent the

week participating at the Thunder Youth Camp. On the last day of the

camp, Kevin Durant made a special appearance at Grantham-Griffins

Field House. Casady was the selected location for Durant to hold a press

conference about his contract extension. Durant added to the camp

excitement by giving camp participants high fives and individual photos

after addressing the packed gymnasium full of fans and media.

5. Newly hired basketball coach Allen Dukes hit the hardwood floor on

a mission: he challenged his Varsity basketball team and enrolled them

in the Oklahoma State University team camp and the Oklahoma Baptist

University team camp. Fourteen players participated in two weeks of

practice and team camps. They played in 18 games and finished with a

9-9 record.

6. Cyclone players attended camps at University of Oklahoma and

Dartmouth, and specialized position camps in Florida and Louisiana. A

large contingent of varsity players competed in the annual 7 on 7 passing 6.

league held at Edmond Santa Fe High School where our opponents

included Millwood, Atoka, Oklahoma Christian, Christian Heritage,

Santa Fe South and Cashion. In addition to attending camps, a

number of Cyclone upperclassmen served as camp counselors at

both the Pigskin Pride Football Camp and the Oklahoma Youth

Football Camp hosted at Casady.

7. Curt Foster coached eighth and ninth graders in a local

freshman basketball summer league held at Bishop McGuinness.

They played a variety of teams including Putnam City, Del City,

Bishop McGuinness, Noble, Northwest Classen, and Oklahoma

Christian.

8. Head coach Jamie Mitcham had her cheerleading squad

participate in the Oklahoma State University cheer camp, and won

numerous awards such as National Cheer Association Leadership

Award, three Superior Ribbons, three Spirit Sticks, five All-Americans,

the Herkie Team Award and the S.P.O.T. Award. Coach Mitcham also

received her Coaches Credential from NCA.

9. Fifteen runners, including alumni, participated in early morning

runs on a daily basis with emphasis placed on enhanced conditioning,

while increasing mileage and strength throughout the summer. Routes

included the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club and trails in Nichols

Hills and Bluff Creek.

10. Thirty-two girls participated in the school-sponsored Field

Hockey camp conducted by head coach Carla Lane. Fundamentals and

team competition were the focus of the camp. Throughout the summer,

open play was conducted on Tuesday and Thursday nights where

current students and Casady graduates joined together on the field for

spirited competition. In early July, 25 Upper Division players attended

the Northwestern University field hockey camp where instruction

was provided by national team players, coaches and former Division I

championship athletes.

11. Head coach Jay Gallegly conducted both the boys and girls

volleyball camps at Casady. Twenty girls and 12 boys participated, which

was held the last week of June.

Cheerleading at Casady School is not just dancing and leading a crowd to its feet.

Under Head Coach Jamie Mitcham, the Casady cheerleading program is gaining momentum

and looking to become a competitive program.

“As a cheerleader and coach for the past 12 years, I have been a part of and worked with

many talented teams,” said Mitcham. “Casady cheerleading has a solid foundation to become

more than just a spirit squad and rise as a dominant force in high school competitive

cheerleading.”

Varsity Cheerleading Team competes at National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) camps

each summer. The last two years, Casady students earned a multitude of awards including

the Herkie Team Award, Leadership Award (two years in a row), three TEAM awards, two bids

to attend NCA nationals, nine superior ribbons on evaluations and six spirit sticks.

In addition, eight Casady cheerleaders have been named NCA All-Americans in the last

two years, proving that Casady has the athletes needed to become a successful program.

21

“It’s been exciting to be a part of the Varsity cheerleading

program for the past three years and see the progression the

squad has made,” said Emily Cox, Casady senior. “When I started

cheerleading at Casady, I had no idea the time and effort it would

take to make the program as good as it is today.”

This year, the varsity cheerleaders will travel to San Antonio,

Texas, to participate in the Alamo Bowl halftime performance.

At the event, they will get to work with some of the nation’s best

choreographers and high school cheerleading teams.

“Participating in the Alamo Bowl will be a great experience

for us,” said Shanna Schuelein, Casady senior. “It will allow us to

build on the skills we learned at camp and give us professional

cheerleading experience to bring back to the Casady community.”

The varsity cheerleading squad has 12 members this year,

with seniors Emily Cox and Shanna Schuelein leading the team as

captains. Casady will also have a junior varsity team and a Middle

Division team, which has close to 30 members for the 2010-

2011 school year. Not only is the program growing in numbers,

the talent from the bottom level up is continuing to develop

confidently.

Head coach Jamie Mitcham cheered at competition level

for ten years, winning or placing in the top two at NCA high

school nationals, all-star nationals and college nationals. She

also competed in the cheerleading world championships, placing

in the top three each time. In addition, she won multiple UCA,

ACA, WSF, and America’s Best national titles. Teams she was a part

of include Oklahoma State University large co-ed, Cheer Athletics,

Cougar Cheer Company and Pro X. She also appeared in the

extreme-cheerleading DVD, “PRO X: The Quest for the Best,” was

one of five cheerleaders picked for a national, prime-time Home

Depot commercial and appeared in American Cheerleader and Jane

magazine. She holds coaching certification through AACCA and NCA.

With all the right elements in place, cheerleading at Casady

is destined to become an outstanding program. Each time the

cheerleaders take the sidelines, they are working to strengthen their

skills and motivate the Casady community to stand with them. It

takes talent and confidence to rally a sports team, but even more to

rally each other to become the best they can be.

“As a new varsity member, I already have the drive to become

a better cheerleader for the team,” said Meredith Mills, Casady

sophomore. “We work hard and continue to practice each week

because we want to grow as a program and portray Casady in the

best light possible. On and off the sidelines, we don’t just represent

ourselves, we represent our community and each other.”

Stay tuned; there is much more to come for cheerleading at

Casady School.

Participating in the Alamo Bowl will be a great experience for us.Shanna Schuelein, Senior

Jimmy’s Concession Stand and Grill has been a

highlight of home varsity football games since 1993.

Surrounded by children, parents, fans and patrons hungry

for dinner, snacks and beverages, it is the cornerstone

of the athletic fields and is open at other times during

the year as deemed necessary by the Casady Parents

Organization.

Casady parent, alumnus and “grillmaster” for more

than three years, John Covington ’79 leads the cook team

that serves up grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, hot links and

chicken breasts. On an average night, they serve between

120 and 150 hamburgers and the same amount of hotdogs,

and they plan for more than double these amounts during

a Casady vs. Heritage Hall game. John has 10 volunteers

per night working in shifts, and he has a number of

volunteers plus parents from Lower, Middle and Upper

Divisions. Clements Food Co. rebuilt the cooker and grill

last year and donates mustard, mayonnaise and barbecue

sauce. John is adding more goodies to the menu for this

fall so watch for changes in Jimmy’s Grill.

Dedicated during Homecoming in October of 1993

and a standing tribute in memory of Jimmy Everest ’94, the

concessions building was given by his family, the Casady

Parents Organization, friends and students. Jimmy, the

son of Christy ’69 and Jim Everest ’66 and brother to Tricia

Everest ’89 and Mary FitzSimons ’93, died in 1992 after a

long bout with a cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. He would

The Casady Parent Organization is very active on campus. We staff and manage the Casady Cupboard, sell concessions from Jimmy’s Concession Stand at sporting events, and work with the teachers and division directors as grade representatives and homeroom parents. This year we will be involved in many activities on campus beginning with the Back to School Picnic and the Boo Hoo Breakfast for parents of kindergarten and senior students. The Cirque du Cyclones Auction, a great tradition, will be held November 20 at the school followed by our Bingo Night in January and our Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast in March this year. Our fundraising efforts provide significant support to the faculty and students. As a Casady parent, you are part of this great organization, and we encourage you to experience the Casady community through volunteer activities at school this year.

Have a great year at Casady!Lee Ann Nordin
