Genesis 3

Genesis 3 relates

accurate history,

not LEGEND or

allegory; that’s the

way it is treated in

the New Testament.

This passage

accounts for the

sinfulness and

fallenness of our

world.

The tempter was

SATAN speaking and

acting through a

reptile to corrupt

God’s creation.

Satan’s strategy

was DECEPTION

and lies: (1-5)

Satan LIES

–About the CHARACTER

of God—cheating you

out of something GOOD

–About the Word of God

– can’t be TRUSTED

He appears to be

good. 2 Cor. 11:14

“angel of light”

Approached EVE

(2 Cor. 11:3)

Questions the status

quo- the prohibition

and LIMITS given by

God The emphasis is

on a restriction. It

implies God can be

QUESTIONED.

Note he doesn’t call

Him LORD God.

Satan implies God

has limited her

FREEDOM. God

doesn’t LOVE you.

Satan offers

freedom to do what

you want.

She DOUBTS God’s

goodness. “We can’t

even touch it.”

Satan LIES to her:

“You won’t DIE!” He

calls God a liar.

“You can do this

without judgment.”

“God doesn’t want you

to be like him.” (5) He

suggests the forbidden

fruit is the path to

FULFILLMENT and joy.

“knowing good and

evil” She already

knew GOOD; she

now would know

evil by

EXPERIENCE.

DESIRE formed

within her to have it.

See 1 Jn. 2:16

She examined the

tree and saw it was

good for FOOD. She

thought it would

satisfy her.

(Lust of the FLESH)

She saw it was a

BEAUTIFUL fruit.

Pleasing to the eye.

(Lust of the EYES)

She saw it would

make her WISE.

(Pride of LIFE)

She believes Satan’s

lie and acts in

REBELLION against

God. She ate the

fruit.

Adam arrives and

Eve gave some to

Adam and He ATE it.

He wasn’t there for

the DECEPTION.

1 Tim 2:14.

The Bible holds

ADAM accountable,

not Eve.

1 Cor. 15:22

BOTH disobeyed

Both have GUILT

and SHAME vs. 7-10

They saw their

nakedness and tried

to cover it, but

couldn’t hide their

SIN.

They hid from God

in the bushes Vs. 8

The consequences

–The whole human race

was plunged into EVIL.

Rom. 5:12

–DEATH spread to all men.

–All face CONDEMNATION

5:18

–All are SINNERS 5:19

How God responded

–God made garments from

ANIMAL skin for them

–A life had to DIE; BLOOD

had to be shed. The first

animal sacrifice; points to

the SON of God who will

give his life as the

ultimate sacrifice
