Seventeen school clays left and as the school year approaches its end, more eyes focus on the two bikes that would seemingly gtwrunipc a blissful summer. 4th grade news At Livingston Elementary it's that

time of the year again for the 4th grade. Derby Time!!! In addition to the usual activities and contests, wc added a special theme this year, Kentucky. Touched By the World!! ' Inmathclassstudcntsgoiatasteof the real world by predicting the out-come of the Derby this year. The students conducted a survey to find the class favorite to win the race. The results were: l3for MeadtJw Flight,5 for Tabasco cat, 3 for Holy Boll, 2 for Mahogany Hall, and 1 each for Kan-daly and Brocco. The class then made a bar graph to display their informa-tion. Wc discovered that our predic-tions weren't worth a hoot when "Go ForGin," "StrodesCrcek."and"Blu-min Affair" came in 1st. 2nd and 3rd. Not one 4th grader had predicted these horses to win!

Next, to the gym, where Mr, Bui-lens was wailing for our annual "Run for the Roses." a two lap run around the "track." Our track, unlike the muddy Churchill Downs track was nice and dry since it was insidc. Wc learned that 22 trips around the gym floor was equal to one mile so it would takeapproximately 271/2 trips around the floor to equal the track at Churchill Downs. Wedicidcdtlutno

famous "Two Minute Run." you've got to be kidding!!! Wc figured with a lot of luck wc may be able to run about 8 laps in two minutes (OuFtst place w'inncr, Bruce Smith ran his two laps in approximately 31 sec-onds.)

Winners of the 5 heats were Ash-ley Carpenter, Bruce Smith, Wesley Halford, Chrjs Kirby and Amanda Gross. The final results were lstplace - Tabasco Cat (Bruce Smith), 2nd place - Meadow Flight (Wesley Hal-ford), and 3rdplacc - Holy Bull (Chris Kirby).

Group I, Amanda Shction, Sandy Moore. John Kuhn. Adam Collins and Wesley Halford won the Steam-boat Racc in 1.2(> seconds. Our race didn't last quite as long as the race between the Delta Queen and the Belle of Louisville, our choice to win.

The winners of the Hot Air Bal-loon contest were: 1 st place - Amanda Gross, 2nd place - Shannon Bullock, and 3rd place - Jonathan Phelps.

InmusicclassMs.Comelius taught us to sing "She's A Grand Old Nag," a song about a Derby winner that,has gotten old. The song was sung to the tunc of "She's A Grand Ole Flag."

Wc wanted to connect Kentucky with the world for our school's "World FatrDay," May I3lhrsowc came up with the theme - Kentucky, Touched By The World!

Each group of students chose a country to research for a Derby con-nection. Studcnischosc thecountries of Africa. England. France. Russia and Germany. They used encyclope-dias. newspapers, books, films, etc.. to find information.

Students discovered that some of the very first jockeys were black (Africa), that Churchill Downs was «pce called The Louisville Jockey Club, and that the idea for the race-track came from England whenColo-ncl Clark visited the Epsom Derby and then built a track in Louisville, (which was named in honor of King Louis XVI from France). The idea of the hot air balloons also came from France when two brothers (Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier) developed the first hot air balloon.

The class also learned that the Kentucky Derby was telecast to Russia for the first time in 1992 and had the largest viewing audience of any program aired in Russia. In 1993 the Derby wasn't aired because of po-litical unrest, but it was aired again this year.

In reading a newspaper Group 2 discovered that a lot of the fast foods (such as frankfurters, hamburgers. bratwurst,£lc.) sold at the Derby had their origin in Germany.

Students also found a lot of inter-esting connections in Kentucky to-day with these countries. Students researched to find information about imports and exports, customs, foods, clothing, arts, sports, etc. that influ-ence our culture today.

To display th is research, each group designed a jockey silk for the World's Fair representing each country. Each silk was a colorful, shiny paper cut out with a map, flag, and the informa-tion their group learned about their country!

The 4th grade would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Cornelius for her help in music class and to Mr. Bullens for his help in P.E. class and for teaching us to use the stopwatch in our races.

The real winner# in this year's Derby were the fourth grade students.

Leslie Carpenter penned a letter to her friend, Teresa Gibbons, before departing for her two-year adventure around the world in her hot-air bal-loon. . .

Balloon Adventure Dear Teresa,

I dccidcd to write a letter to you before I goon my two-year triparound the world in a hot air balloon. It will be fun because the houses will look like little toys and the cars will look I ike hot wheels. Also, al I of the breeze' will be blowing on me. Just dream about your hair blowing in the soft wind up in the sky looking down at a beautiful view as you go around the world in a colorful hot air balloon.

Also, imagine this! If it was night time, I would be seeing the beautiful sunset and the bright and shiny stars as the sun goes down below the mountains and valleys. Oh, what a beautiful view that would be! Just think, Leslie Carpenter watching the beautiful world and its nature.

Then, in the morning fresh air, you could take a deep breath and slowly let it out and flip your hair off of your shoulders and slide your hair easily behind your ears and fly you way to the finish line. Oh, what a great ad-venture!

Wild -felventures in Paradise

One day, when I was in my bal loon with my friends, the wind blew us off our course. We were in our balloon for several days and our supplies were running out, so we decided to go lower and look for an island. But somehow we went too low and went into the sea. We were scared until we found out that the basket would float, we finally got tired and fell asleep.

Chapter 2 The Island The next morning it was really

foggy. We could hardly see. Then out of nowhere came a huge tidal wave. It wiped us completely out. We swam as hard as we could somehow we touched land, but we were too ex-hausted to care. We were so sleepy that we fell right asleep.

The next morning we split up and searched the island. We found every-thing we needed-food, water and animals. We even found a few tigers. We caught a few goals. We drank milk from the goals. But ever so often a tiger would steal a goat.

Chapter 3 The Tiger Hunt One day we decided to kill the

tiger. We gathered up strong vines and big rocks. We set a trap for the tiger. We used a goal for bait Pretty soon the tiger came walking along the path. As soon as the tiger saw the goat, it leaped at iL Before the dumb tiger noticed it was a trap we killed it by throwing big rocks at it We broke its jawbone out and skinned it.

Chapter 4 The Hut We got pretty tired of sleeping out

under the stars so we decided to build a hut First, we tried slicks but that just caved in on us. We decided to make one out of bc&rds. We did not have a saw so we all put on our thinking caps. Finally, someone said why don't we use the tiger's teeth so we put the teeth in a stick. The saw worked good and before we knew it we had the best hut you have ever seen. That was working good for awhile till goats started to get in the hut and use the bathroom on us and, on top of that, they would lay on us. We decided this had to stop even though the poop didn't smell thai bad. But it had 10 be!

I am writing to you hccausc I am planning a balloon festival. There will be 1,(100 balloons in it. I am working hard to make it a succcss.

I have made a plan of how to con-trol the traffic, eating and shelter.

Wc can let the people detour from London, Mt Vernon, Retf •Hill, arid 490. I have furnished six buses for transportation. Three will go around London and 490, and the other three will around Mt. Vernon and Red Hill. They will make about five rounds and drop people off at streets, park-ing lots and sidewalks. They will park behind K&M Grocery. If some people are driving they can park behind K&M store and Livingston Pentecostal Church.

I think that at least six restaurants will do so I picked these. At Mt. Ver-non they could go to Snack Shack. McDonalds, and Dairy Queen.

At London the restaurants are McDonalds, Burger King and Pizza Hut

For shelter the people could go to hotels to stay at night. The buses will lake them there. A hotel in Mt. Ver-non is Mt. Villa Hotels. In London are Ramada Inn and Comfort Suites. We could also move the fire trucks out of the firehouse and if it rained people could go in there.

I will alsocontact Southern Lace to see if they will come and sing for the people so they could dance and have fun.

I will see if the government will help us pay the^harges.

I want to make sure that everything goes fjne.

Horse Talks to Man One day I was at Churchill Downs

Derby Race. The Derby was over so I went to look at the horses. When I got to the bam I wanted to take a picture of my favorite horse. Holy Bull. So, Iaimedmycamera. "Flash!"

"Ow, please stop!" said $ sweet voice.

"Who said that?" I asked, startled. "I did," said Holy Bull. "Well, why you talked! I want to

ask you a few questions. Do you like your jockey?" I asked.

"Yes I do like my jockey. In fact, I love my jockey," said Holy Bull.

"Holy Bull, what do you do for fun?" I said.

"Of course, I race. Now, let me ask you a question if you don't mind," said Holy Bull.

"Sure, blab away," I said. "What's your job and name?" he

said. "I'm a reporter and my name is

Thomas," I said. "Well, I have to leave. Bye."

RCHS smoking policy strengthened

The smoking policy at Rockcastle County High School was "strength-ened" by the RCHS/SBDM board of education at its continued session Tuesday.

Ruth Allen made the motion to change the first offense of the to-bacco policy to six weeks in alterna-tive school.

The same penally will apply to any student who is serving asa "look out" and alerting violatorsof an approach-ing teacher or administrator.

Bill Ponder, agriculture tcacher at RCHS, submitted his Ictttcr of resig-nation.

Principal Ronnie Cash requested input from the council as to whether RCHS should request his agriculture position be filled or another content area teacher.

After discussion the motion was midc by Tom Kelly to advertise the position. It passed.

Principal Cash reported Donna Dailey of RenforValley has told the school adm in istrator that Ren fro barn was available for Baccalaureate and the Rockcastle Ministerial Associa-tion will fund the endeavor. Date and time is 1:30 p.m. May 29. Senior awards night is May 26.

Chapter 5 The tree House The next few days we sawed and

built till we had the perfect house. Our house was in a tree. We had a

ladder to get up and a slide to get down. We also had a bridge to get from hut to hut We each had our own hut We even had a swing made with vines and a board. We all loved it there and we wanted to stay there forever, but after a few years we started to get homesick. We decided to use the tiger skin to signal planes to rescue us. But,aftera few months, we lost hope. We spent our days being miserable.

Chapter 6 The Rescue One day a plane circled the island

and it landed right on the beach, but it was not a rescue team. It was Chinese fighters. They went into the island and set up camp. When they were asleep we hijacked the plane and we flew to the United Stales. We forgot

what kind of plane we were in and the United Stales shot us down. We jumped out of our plane with para-chutes. We landed in Rockcastle County Kentucky where we were met by Judge Executive Buzz Carloftis, who drove us home.

Well, for me and my friend, we never went ballooning again.
