Annual Ministry Review. We will surely be encouraged as we hear reports from the leaders of the different ministry teams of the past year. We will be looking for-ward to what God has for us dur-ing the rest of this church calen-

dar year. Come be a part of it. We start with the Pot-luck @ 6pm. You can bring your favorite dish to share. Members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.

--face painting! --prizes and candy!

Today, Sunday, October 18th 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Norman Room To celebrate

our youngest family member:

AZRIEL CHRISTOPHER SALAZAR

The HARVEST-ival is almost here!

At the Deacons' meeting last Sunday, October 11, the fol-lowing officers were elected:

Chairman -- Ted Gonzales Vice Chair -- Lee Matthews Secretary -- Betty Dieudonne

NEXT SUNDAY’S PREACHER, October 25th is Rev. Dr. Samuel S. Chetti, Executive Minister of the American Baptist Churches of Los Ange-les, Southwest and Hawaii.

It is a pleasure to serve as your interim worship pastor. As a scholar and professional artist called by God to ministry, I continue to ask, “Who is an artist called by God to serve God’s purposes?” For the answer to

this, I encourage you to examine the calling of Bezalel found in Exodus 31:1-11 (Also, Exodus 35:30 – 36:2). It is here that I find the best answer to my question.

1. Art is within God’s will.

2. God calls the artist by name to a vocation from God.

3. Artistic ability is a gift from God.

4. Qualifications for the Artistic Minister:

a. God has filled the artist with ability.

b. God has filled the artist with intelligence.

c. God has filled the artist with knowledge.

d. God has filled the artist with craftsmanship.

e. God has inspired the artist to teach and has called other artists to assist with the purposes God has for the artists.

As I look at these elements, there are many who want to serve, but they are not given the artistic ability. There are those in secular artistic life that have amazing ability, but they lack intelligence or refuse to learn the knowledge that informs their art. At my age, I am finding many friends who have forgotten about craftsmanship and the need to continually sharpen their skills and learn new techniques. The last gift, that of being inspired to teach, has been the most critical part in helping people define the attributes of a vocationally called artist. Those who serve in artistic ministry must love to teach others how to express their faith in word and deed through the arts.

I believe that some of our people are being called of God to service as a musical artist. For those who are not called by God to artistic ministry, your calling is just as important as those called by God to artistic ministry. Together, we grow as disciples, worship, actively do God’s work in our world, and connect with others who are examining their own journey and call.

For those who are called to the arts, let me invite you to get involved: sing in the choir (rehearsal every Sunday at 1:30 PM), work with Carol to dream about including the arts in the discipleship of our children and youth, or work with our team leaders to help reach our community through the arts in the hands

of the Holy Spirit.

We are truly blessed at FBC. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Peace to you.

John Simons
