The Collect

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels al-ways serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People: Amen.

The First Reading Genesis 28:10-17 Eucharistic Minister: A reading from the book of Genesis.

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” Eucharist Minister: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 103:19-22

19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven, * and his kingship has dominion over all.

20 Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, * and hearken to the voice of his word.

21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will.

22 Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; * bless the Lord, O my soul.

All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:* as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Reading Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Eucharist Minister: A reading from the book of Hebrews. Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to an-gels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to an-gels. But someone has testified somewhere, “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their feet.” Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Eucharistic Minister: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God. The Sequence Hymn No. 324 Let all mortal flesh keep silence

The Gospel John 1:47-51 Celebrant: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the an-gels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Marc Eames The Nicene Creed People: We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glori- fied. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People People pray responsively, referencing italic. Almighty God, hear the prayers of your people gathered around your altar here today. Bless all our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world, especially those who serve you under the patronage of St. Michael and All Angels: We pray especially for St. Michael’s in Milton and St. Michael’s in Holliston. Bless this diocese, and Alan and Gayle our bishops. May our eyes and ears and hearts be open to receive angels who surprise us, who come unannounced, who come unexpectedly. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Through the angels we are reminded that the richness and variety of your creation far exceeds our knowledge of it. Help us all to become better stewards of your creation Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We give thanks for the many ways in which your loving care watches over us. Dragons of despair, darkness, bitterness, division, and greed threaten us. Send your angels to slay these dragons, send your angels to help us tame these dragons. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We thank you for the angels who travel with us and guide us, who protect us from danger and help us find our way when we are lost. Hear our prayer.

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. Therefore we praise you joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name. SANTUS S-125

This song may be printed in congregational song sheets for one-time use.

Please stand or kneel as able. Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us on creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you set him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood for the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.’

Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; pre-senting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, be-ing sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjec-tion under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with The Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all crea-tion the head of the Church and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. People: Amen. Celebrant: And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say; All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Joy of Flowers

You may have noticed in the Sunday bulletin that the altar flowers are often given in honor of someone. Have you wondered how you too can dedicate flowers during the year – not just at Christmas or Easter? The altar flowers can be given as a memorial to a loved one, as celebration of a special event, as a way to beautify the church in thanksgiving to God. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board to the right of the kitchen window listing every Sunday throughout the year. Simply print your name and the name of the person(s) being remembered (or the occasion), on the date you wish to have the flowers dedi-cated. You may also contact the church office with your request via email at: [email protected] with this information. A suggested contribution of $40 is requested the week prior to the date selected to cov-er the cost of the flowers. (The Flower Guild budget is very limited; this is a wonderful way to give thanks and to beautify the church to the glory of God.) You may also request particular colors or flowers which have special significance and the Flower Guild will do its best to accommodate your request. The altar flowers are arranged on Saturday mornings in preparation of the Sunday dis-play. The only time when no flowers are present is during Lent, although if you have

an occasion of special significance you wish to honor with flowers, an arrangement can be made for the Narthex. On Monday mornings the altar flowers are re-arranged into smaller individual vases and delivered to shut-ins or others in the parish family as an expression of thanks, to welcome a new family or the newly baptized.
